Quick note on the OBD2 situation: The garage was half right. OBD2 was mandatory in the US from 1996, but not until 2001 (petrol) or 2004 (diesel) in Europe. Also, only emissions-related data has to be made available to generic OBD2 scan tools by law. In practice, you can get quite far with this because nearly everything on the engine is emissions-related somehow. Manuafcturers can lock you out of other modules (gearbox, airbags etc.) even with OBD2 if they so choose.
You may be right in all you say but in practice, I have found that my VW OBD2 scanner doesn't work in my Berlingo, while the Citroën scanner that looks identical, does work. But won't work in the VW Lupo. I also have a Freelander 1 that needs quite an expensive OBD2 scanner. Same plug, but it doesn't work in anything else.
I hope everything sorts itself out by the big day Mr HubNut. I must say that when my westie passed away I found it much harder than any human in my life so far, I'd be prepared some family members might find it harder than others. Take care of yourself and your family over Christmas Mr HubNut.

Sorry to hear about Titch, tough times. Can relate to your scanner concerns too. Mid South Island Road trip the Bravo airbag spontaneously lit up while driving. With help from Canterbury Fiat club was able to get sorted in Christchurch (just a dodgy connection in the fusebox) but needed their contacts scanner reset to turn off and 2001 Fiat Bravo scanners are few and far between in NZ!

I had a nightmare trying to read the obd prot in my wife's mg ZR and the only reader that managed to get in and read/ clear the codes was this one:
OBD2 ELM327 V1.5 Bluetooth Wireless Car Scanner Torque Auto Scan Tool
I got it on eBay as a final, and very cheap, roll of the dice. It has been fantastic for me although I downloaded a different scan app (literally called car scanner) than the one they recommend. It may be worth trying?

Do look after yourself Ian, I know you feel responsible for everything, but you shouldn't for things that are beyond your control. 🤗 Yes it sucks if you want to keep your promises to your customers and strikes are making that very difficult. However, we'll still be here after your holiday break, do take some time to recharge, be it hours of mindless staring into a manifold, or a board game with the family, or whatever makes the dust in your mind settle. Yea I have 1999 golf obd is a nightmare on mine , did find a bloke who could do it and even he forgot the second time how to make it communicate lol.
Yes luckily we have all had the cough cold thing before Christmas.
But its been enough just to go to work and nothing else .

Good to know we're not the only ones having a stressful time (flat above my garage - which I own but needs renovation - flooded on Sunday, also flooding garage and somehow killing our fridge freezer and causing the electrics to trip when the oven is used!).
My understanding on OBD is that all cars give you the codes and allow you to clear them through the OBD reader, but pretty much all cars require their manufacturer's software to do more in depth diagnosis (eg. OBD might tell you the circuit its on, but the software might tell you the exact component) and to change settings/programming and reset things.
Oh no! That's not fun at all.
Oh dear, I know exactly how you feel Ian when everything goes wrong at once. Hope it improves soon and you can have a nice and restful Christmas. It is annoying when people earning more than me make everybody's life even more difficult because they "can't afford to live", yet I manage just fine on less income... The mind boggles.
Sometimes you just have to put your priorities in order and get on with it Ian. It's amazing how many problems can be thrown at you all at once but.....................things can only get better. It is disappointing that OBD nonstandardness seems to have continued so long over there. Here in the US, it really did pretty much switch over to OBD-2 in 1996 (sometimes a bit earlier), because the government was pretty strict about this for emissions reasons. It doesn't mean that you don't still need manufacturer-specific software or cables to get deeper into diagnostics, but at least basic high level generic codes are "always" available with a cheap scanner or dongle.
Typically the end of year blues, I'm in it too, hopefully that feels a little less alone Ian. After the flu I can't get going, and the projects are piling up, the Reliant Kitten has decided to start leaking oil at the rear wheel seal on the brake shoes, while the Ford Fiesta is in the garage for major maintenance.
Thank you, always good to get an update, also when it is a 'hurdles to overcome' report Hope around Christmas time all settles down a bit and you can have some really good time off. In the mean time, thinking out loud here, perhaps Miss Dasiy can be summoned to the rescue for merch delivery and family transport? For your careful consideration naturally.

I understand your rant about OBD issues - I had two Saab 9-5's which used entirely different software. Give yourself a break and concentrate on your homelife rather than posting videos. Merry Christmas to all of you.
I have used Forscan software on Android and Windows.
It was able to read all trouble codes on two Focus Cmax diesel, as well as ABS and I was able to program in a new EGR. All that was free software, both for Android and Windows.
Christmas and the most stressful time for nearly everybody not to mention the cold weather dont worry about contain with your fleet just try and relax and enjoy the family together
The "Full chip" Lexia copies are a bit pricy, but absolutely worth the outlay and the faff setting it up on an old laptop. Saved me many a penny trying to get to a specialist and solving the latest round of "Because French!"

I've just started using another carrier to send my parcels, a lot more quick, reliable and convenient compared with Royal Mail.
@@andrewbarnes1295 I work in a hospital and we've resorted to texting and emailing appointments if they're within a fortnight otherwise we'd not be able to see patients. It's working quite well if I'm honest.

Term times vary a lot around the UK.
Simple things first, try a fuel additive to clean injectors. Hoping things get better real damn quick so you and the Hub clan can have a Merry Christmas.
Check the vain air ducts including the turbo boost pipes for leaks, also if you can get at it open up the egr valve and clean it.
I had a 307 2.0 HDI that surged intermittently and it turned out to be a problem with the boost pressure regulator on the turbo.
Wouldn't hurt to run a cleaner over the MAF sensor and a few others in the intake system.
What you could do with is an OBDII reader that can datalog the engine parameters as you drive, so that someone who knows how to interpret can get a clue as to what is happening.
My cousin in South Wales had 2 little old dogs depart the family earlier this year, they still have one slightly nutty mini Schnauzer however ! It barks extensively when you enter the house, settles down once you have settled down, then starts barking again half an hour later when it remembers you are there. I think it's a case of "They all do that Sir" with the breed....
Frustrating about the Berlingo and average apathetic garage service, I finally got my 1.2 Brava's long standing intermittent starter motor sluggishness sorted with a £68 recon at a local autoelectrician a few years after another guy I had used quite a lot assured me 100% that it was fine after I removed it and gave it to him. I finally went with my logic and instincts and bit the bullet again... and now it's like a different car.

Bella issues will possibly be the high pressure diesel pump I think - haven't heard of many injector issues on them.
Have you tried a strong fuel system cleaner in Bella? Wynns Gold or Forté.

European obd2 for diesels is 2005 onwards, so yes you are on the money with needing lexia or similar, even post 2005 the dealer diagnostic tool does a lot more than most.
I do have lexia/peugeot planet, though yet to delve into its capabilities yet!

Regarding Bella would it be worth looking into talking to Terraclean to see if giving the engine a carbon and injector clean might be worth a shot to see if it solves the lumpy running and performance?

Yes 90s to early 00's Citroen/Peugeot cars use the ODBII port, but don't speak the OBDII protocol. I bought a Lexia/PP2000 system from ebay and have it on my laptop for diagnostics, live data, key pairing, Eolys fluid top-up updates etc.

We all know of a friend of yours, although he's the UK's premier Australian Ford mechanic, he also does some occasional work on Citroëns (there's even a subtle rumour that he may have an SM). Does he have anything that could talk to Bella?
OBDII really isn't the standard it should be on European cars, and there are talks of it being scrapped in future! Even though all cars are meant to be OBDII compliant, you still need software like ForScan, Lexia, VagCom, VIDA/vDash and so on, in order to actually talk to the car. ForScan is actually a fabulous piece of software for Fords, I've used it on several mk2 Focuses, a mk1 C-Max and a mk4 Mondeo. I need vDash for my current V40 but as yet haven't been able to stomach the financial outlay for it (I've had the V40 5 years now).
