I am going to try this ribbing today as a dummy run. I am not knitting a whole hat, just the ribbing bit so I feel more confident and brave to try the whole thing - so a dummy run first. I knitted my first ever plain hat yesterday - in fact it was my first knitting anything for years! I love your attention to detail and your instructions are so clear. What can possibly go wrong? Me! Got to keep trying and familiarising myself so my confidence grows. Thank you so much!

Happily I just got my addi king from ebay. I paid $194. That includes tax and shipping. I am very pleased even though it was listed as gently used. It looks like it was bearly used. Happy as punch!!
That's really cute when you get done with it. It looks like an awful lot of work, to me anyway. You have a lot of patience. It's kind of scary letting it run like that... LOL! I might try it on a preemie hat but I don't think I have the patience to do it on an Addi King! Maybe when I grow up...I'm only 75! Good job!

Yes... any Addi patterns would tranlate nicely to a loom. This one would be even easier because you can purl on a loom without having to drop stitches and "re-knit" as I demonstrate here.

I finally did it! And I learned how to do a Mickey Mouse hat and Pokemon hat. Plus, I want to say thank you for teaching us this special rib technique on the addi. It took me a few tries to try to get it start but once I learned it I finally did it. Now, I am going to have some fun with color changing yarns. The ribbing is a nice idea. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tutorial! I love that I can crank out a custom hat in minutes. (I'm always losing/misplacing my hats...) When I was doing the ribbing, I found a latch hook to be helpful for reforming the knit stitches. (Works best when working the hook vertically.) I specifically got the Sentro 48 specifically to do the double ribbing evenly because of you said in your video!
I've heard that some people do prefer a latch hook but some, like me, don't like working with them at all! And the best part is that it doesn't matter because we achieve the same results in the end!! Don't you wish everything was like that? I love options!
I love this idea. I live in Colorado and it it’s cold here which I love. I have both the express and the king. I bought the king about 5 years ago and I gave up. I could not get the to stay on the needles. So I found you on TH-cam and now I just ordered the express pro. I ordered more #3 yarn and I am ready to begin. Thank goodness for you. You are so good at explaining and showing how to use this. I bought the king so I could make homeless people hats. Never could get the big one to work. I look forward to making all kinds of the double hats. Thanks again also for your video on not giving up. lol Lee
I'm so glad I could help, Leota! Most of my early Addi videos are just my sharing of the discoveries I made and I struggled to learn how to use them! There was virtually NO info about them back then so I had to figure it out by myself. I'm so glad I can take a bit of the frustration away for you!

Really appreciate this episode, You explained very well on how to get that ribbed stitch, I love it, who hasn't had to fix a dropped stitch in regular knitting, I certainly have and this is nothing more than that and a basic yarn marker to know exactly when to stop dropping that stitch! Machine Knitting might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has it's benefits especially like for people like you who do a lot of Charity gift Knitting, it saves so much time and then you can focus on other hand knits that may take a bit more concentration due to different Stitch Patterning! Wonderful tutorial, as always! I love the color you chose for this project. I'm getting my new machine today (the generic machine you so kindly reviewed) and am so excited to start knitting up some charity hats. I actually just bought a huge quantity of Vanna's Choice to try out since you always recommend it so highly (I had a few skeins already, love to knit with it!).Oh, and would you look at that! Well, I've only had it for about 24 hours but I can tell you already, I love it! I've made 9 hats for donations and am busy cranking away to make some more. I do notice mine does not love Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn, but that's alright. I even found a great way to attach it to an old cutting mat that my kids drew all over so it stays put on my wooden desk. Your tutorials are helping me so much! I've already done stripes and am about to try fair isle. Wish me luck!
Very easy to follow instructions. It’s a little tedious and slow but I was able to do it on my Sentro that has 48 hooks. I used an ugly color because I wasn’t sure it would turn out ok. It looks great and now I’m wishing I had used a prettier yarn 🧶 oh well I have a ribbed neon pink hat now 😂
Donate that hat! There's somebody out there who would LOVE to wear hot pink! We all have different tastes.

I really like this pattern, tho I am not sure that I have the patience to do it. I actually think the reason I have retired my addi is because everything came out looking the same and I like variety. I could never do anything but stripes. Lol! Pehaps I will give this a try when I get a chance to pick up my yarn and needles again....we are in the process of painting the whole apartment. Such a big job...Hope you have a nice day!
Ahhh... painting. We hired someone to do the main level of this house but my husband insisted on doing the downstairs himself. (That was 3 months ago. Ha!)

This is such a great tutorial? I am really confident at crochet but could never get knitting. So the wheels are perfect for me. As you are going 'up the ladder' that's essentially a single crochet, do you think it's possible to do any other kind of crochet in there? I may have to play.
Actually, creating the ribbing is more like a slip stitch as you're not adding any yarnovers and lots of non-crocheters prefer to use a latch hook for that step. In truth, since this is a creative process, you can incorporate crochet any way you wish! When I first bought this machine, I had no knitting experience, so I used crochet to put a border/band around the edge of a single layer hat. (You can see some of those old tutorials in my Addi Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLV9cndFtR5BVQrjZ7X1f0HRTV92kscJf2.html ) But... it could be great if you could think of other ways to incorporate crochet!

I recently purchased one of these machines based on your recommendations. I love the videos! However, I saw a video, for an addi, using a long tail cast on to get the ribbed effect. Could you do one of these videos? Your videos are very easy to follow, and this one was very complicated.

Addi Braided Stitch by Little John? Have you heard of her? I can't follow her tutorials very well because she does not explain clearly how to twist the yarn with the crochet hook. I know people make braided hats on the king size addi for winter but its not clearly explained. For some reason I can't copy the link here but it is called addi braided stitch, youtube user name Little John
No, I had never heard of her but I thought that was an excellent tutorial. I didn’t see her twist with a crochet hook. She twisted the first strands with her hand (either direction will do) and then inserted her hook and began chaining with 4 strands at a time. That’s all there was to it!
now I get it. I was having a hard time understanding how to twist the yarn!
I have been looking for a solution like this for a few weeks - than you so much for the detailed video! I want to create a hat where the inside is a solid color and the outside has a pattern (orientation will matter). Now I just need to figure out which part comes first - the lining or the outside. For example, when the fabric is coming out of the knitting machine, I am presuming to do the lining color, then ribbing (first half in lining color, second half in outside color), then outside pattern. Any thoughts? Thanks again!
(Hmmm... thought I answered this but I guess it didn't go through! Trying again...) It doesn't matter which side you start with because once you get it off the machine and close each end, you'll then decide which end to stick in the inside. THEN once you secure the tops together invisibly, it becomes reversible so you're good either way! (Method is demonstrated at the end of this video.)

Just like any other craft, machine knitting is a collection of learned skills. If you have the machine and can make a basic hat, you can expand on your skills with something like this. (Intermediate level)
OMG keep practicing, I know how you feel, I already did this years ago, but I take it off and do the ribbing the bottom. Not as thick but same premise. You will get there!

How many inches for a child’s hat? I have the loops and thread knitting machine but don’t know how many inches for a child’s hat same as you have in the video but different colors for Christmas, my vision is one side red, the other side green and the brim part white no pom Pom.

What is 8 ply yarn? Is this medium or worsted yarn? Thanks in advance
8-ply is an Australian term. It's like our light worsted here in the US from what I understand.

i keep finding dropped stitches when moving to next needle that i need to unhook. it drives me mad because i'm extremely careful and i cannot figure out how this keeps happening. there's no way of fixing it after i discover there's an issue. every time i find an error i can only cast off and start again. it is extremely demotivating.
Don't get discouraged! My best advice is to join on of the active facebook groups (Addi King Loomers and Knits is probable one of the most comprehensive) There, you can post pictures/videos of your issues and others are eager to help!
Is this really faster than knitting the ribbing manually?
"Faster" isn't the goal here. This is a technique for putting ribbing in the middle of a circular knitting machine project. Completely different craft than knitting with needles. (Many who use a circular knitting machine don't know how to knit with needles.)

Do the hats fit adults
Depends on the yarn. I have some doubled hats that fit me great. (My head is an average 22" circumference.) Others are too tight. The thinner the yarn, the more stretch you get.
Are there Addi patterns for hats for adult men?
Loom knit will be faster.. this way take too long and too thich , thanks fir sharing
thats way too much work. I won't be doing that. Is there a way to do the ribbing with knitting needles then put them on the machine and work from there?
Of course but in my opinion, it's even more tedious trying to get it back on the machine especially if your gauge doesn't meet or exceed that of the machine. It's only yarn so give it a try and see if you can develop a method you like.
Looks too hard to even try...!
