    My scraps go to squares to Blankets for Canada. They collect 8 inch squares to put together as blankets for people in need, shelters, family services, inner city neighborhoods. If you're in Canada, they can always use more squares.

    I made Christmas stockings out of scrap yarn. I made the top band, heal and toe out of red, green and white and the body of the stocking in scrap yarn. My family loved them. I made most of them extra large and sometimes I put a first name on the top band. Some of my family members hangs them on their wall every Christmas.

      I learned to knit from my mum when I was 8. She makes incredible big teddy bears and I give her my yarn tails and other really small amounts to use as stuffing :) We've been doing it for years. It's an awesome way to combine both of our forces into a finished piece.

    The Random Stripe Generator is a great tool to learn about color changing schemes for scarfs and other projects. I had so much fun with the random generator that I came up with some cool coloring ideas for projects. Mrs. Margaret comes up with the best ideas to improve on the crafts. Plus you can make pet toys out of left over scraps. I finished off two left over grey yarn scraps with making a bunny rabbit, plan to make more in future to use up the scraps. It was also so kind of you to help us improve on our own style technique. I bookmark the random stripe generator to my computer now I have some real fun with it. Thank you.

    I had once an awesome jumper my friends mother made me knitting I presume from scars she knitted a few rows then when the colour changed she slipped one stitch every few stitches and the next row purled it off then the next colour change she did that in the mid point of the previous slipped spaces it looks amazing as a jumper and great use of scraps.

    One of the most beautiful things to do is Tunisian crochet with scrap yarns. You just do Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) aka "Afghan stitch" and every pass you change color. It works best if you have a group of harmonious colors. When starting and stopping the row, you leave a 6" tail approx. as your result, depending upon how much scrap you're using up, if it is an afghan or a pillow or even a handbag, you can figure how to make the fringe look good as part of the project. This also makes fun placemats and if you are dealing with bulky yarn, you may make a bath mat.
    Now, I've also made hats with Tunisian double-ended hooks so it is the only Tunisian which you turn while making it. The hat does then need seaming and on the one side the fringe can be added into a Pom-Pom. The other side, you can knit and i-cord and cover the fringes so if fringe isn't your thing, you can i-cord for afghans also as I have allergies and don't like fringe by my nose.
    And thank you oodles for all the great ideas.

    • @sheepishlysharing

      You know.... I've only dabbled a bit in Tunisian crochet but I really did like it. I need to put that on my list of things to dive into.

      I have a great set... I think they're by Knitter's Pride... but I've never actually completed a project. I did lots of practice stitches. I've seen people use a knitting tool for repair garter stitch that's sold only for that purpose but clearly a double ended Tunisian hook is simply what it is! (But it's much shorter... like 3-4")

    • @courag1
      @courag1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Margaret Olander I put a link at the bottom of this post, for a project that I think you'd love, but you'll be able to just watch what she does and understand how it is done, it is in Italian however. She is making hats with a bulky yarn and the hats work up very fast. She works a seamless Tunisian hat on a straight double-ended Tunisian hook, using two colors. They look very tailored when done and something men would like also. In the bulky yarn probably a 6 weight, it works up fast.
      I actually have two sets of Knitter's Pride Tunisian hooks to make the double-Enders and got a small cord to join them though I do think it would be cool to get the hook she is using as I LOVE bamboo or wooden hooks and knitting needles. The wood just seem more earthy then using metal and they are never cold.
      The link I pasted, does not start the tutorial until you are 1:00 into the video . Hope you enjoy it. With your vision for projects, you may enjoy this a lot. I don't speak Italian but I do speak French and understand a bit of Spanish so I can get the gist of what she is doing just by watching.

      Yes... I did a video on making our own DIY Caron-type cakes but since they're simply joining one color to another, I can't justify the time it takes to stand there and do it! I just sit down with the colors I want and join while working on the project. Boom! Goal accomplished!

    I love all of these ideas. I always end up with little bits of yarn that I can't do much with and while I mostly do big box yarn (Red Heart, Caron, Bernet, and Peaches and Cream) but I do very rarely treat myself with stuff from a local yarn store. I would recommend Magic Knot which I've recently discovered, for the big box yarn I would say look at Bella Coco who did it, it is really simple but hard to explain and she shows it the only way I understood it.
    What I like to do is separate my yarn into light and dark and using Magic Knot that makes a Wonder Ball and rely on that, it is a bit busy but not overly so and could be made with as few as two colors in long turning or you can use a hundred different colors in short color changes or anything in between. My favorite color mash up is dark purple and white and I discovered it on accident (Red Heart Amethyst and Red Heart White).
    I do have to say you've inspired me to crochet for charity (I can't knit and I am so jealous of those who can) I was always planning to do that but only after I've finished making the biggest things I want to. I've decided instead to work on things for charity while also doing things that I want to do (I do want to make things for charity but I also have things I want to make for myself or someone else) So I've started making things for charity to. But I do have a question I hope that since you wait to bring your things to (since I don't want to be going to donate stuff every time I finish only one project especially since I love to do sets) what should I do to keep the things clean and nice looking, do you think a simple bin would do?

    • @sheepishlysharing
      @sheepishlysharing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just store mine in a plastic bags. Actually, they're bags that cover our clothes when we pick them up from the cleaners! I knot the end where the hanger comes out and fill the bag. Since it's clear, I can see what's in it!

    I inherited a hug bunch of yarn including a whole bunch of small/ish balls. I took them all and tied together to make one bug ball. I then made blanket squares and a big afgahn.

    • @ShoshiPlatypus
      @ShoshiPlatypus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Debra Jahnke I do this too. I make 2 big balls from 2 contrasting colours (my current project is yellows for the background, and purples for the repeating small circles pattern) and just follow the simple graph for the pattern repeat, working in the ends as you come to each join. I graduate the colours from dark to light and back again. Sometimes you get high contrast, and sometimes a subtle effect between the two colours. It is so, so easy to do, and the result never fails to impress. People think it is a lot more complicated than it is.

    Making hats never failed. I do have a lot of yarn, a friend of mine gave some yarn, her mom doesn't crochet anymore so I ended with old yarn, funky colours, texture, and size, some are sport, bulky etc. I been making hats, purses and scarfs... I still have a lot left

    one of my long time favorite things to do with the very small scraps (1.5 in and larger) is to tie them all into a ball and then turn that ball of scraps into monster grocery bag holders. each one is different and i find it fun to come across those little bits and remember the original project it came from....this even goes for the skinny ribbon and elastic that sometimes holds a pair of shoes together...basically anything goes

    Preemie hats are great for scraps because you don't need much yarn at all. I've had three foster preemies and it's really hard to find hats for them that don't engulf their whole head. Preemies also have to be kept warm and hats help. Great charity item.❤️

    what I do with my leftovers is makins scrap afghans for foster kids at Christmas time, but not all are from scraps, n then w/ the tiny strings left over I put in a ziplock n use to keep my bird feeder w/ so the birds can use them to make their nests.

      I was giving my scraps to the birds until the scientist at the Natural Science Museum told me not to! He said only short, NATURAL fibers and preferably organic as some dyes can be harmful. Also length of the scrap is a factor. Here's a link for more info: www.goodknitkisses.com/psa-dangerous-yarn-scraps-for-birds/

    I hoard every scrap. I am a great fan of Kaffe Fasset, and follow his motto, “When in doubt, add 40 more colours”! You can get absolutely awesome results by mixing and matching quite small lengths, and working in your ends as you go. Following a simple Fair Isle type repeating pattern springs to life with lots of different colours. I think knitting in one plain colour is just plain boring!l

    HI Mary Margaret,
    I have just been sorting all of my craft things, so this is topical for me. I made a point to sort based on how I was going to use my yarn for example, is this planned for a sweater? Pop all sweater quantities together, planned for a blanket well give it it's own space, no plan then sort by weight/fibre. I also made a point to make up project kits with pattern, needles, yarn all together so I can just pick one when I want something new, they are all from the top items on my queue so I know I would be happy with any of them being finished and I have already been working on 2 of them :0)

    I’d love if more people learnt how to knit and crochet. It’s such a simple task and a great hobby. I knit blankets and toys for animal shelters and rescue homes so when the animals find their forever home, they bring something with them that makes them feel safe. The blankets aren’t too big, about the size of an average Male hand. It would be cool if for one week every year before winter, people all over the world knit as much as possible and send them off at the end of the week for thousands of animals and homeless people. People could go out and knit a little jumper for a local stray cat that they sometimes feed. That would me AMAZING!!

    • @sheepishlysharing
      @sheepishlysharing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that's a nice wish! (Except the cat sweaters! Most cats won't tolerate sweaters. Plus, it impedes their grooming which is a huge part of cat behavior.) I can't crochet anymore because of my hands but I used to make granny square afghans with my leftovers.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm quite cack-handed and even more so when it comes to textiles: no matter who tried to teach me how to knit (every girl and some boys, except me, could do it in primary school!) I never managed to make even a dishcloth, and I while others in my class were making patterns and sewing trousers, dresses and shirts before they were 12 yo, my teacher banned me to go anywhere near a sewing machine. That was the last time I did anything more than sewed the emergency button or fixed a small tear... I HATED anything to do with craft!
    But I slowly changed when I got kids and now I have started learning how to crochet. My projects are not good enough to put on display and often I find a mistake so far at the beginning that I don't want to unravel the work umpteenth time to fix it! So, since I mainly make blankets, I donate my sad efforts to animal charities. When a new animal is brought in its bedding it is given a new blanket to prevent of cross-infection, just in case: machines take space, cost money and take time, the blankets are thrown away - charities are always in need for more blankets, as are people living on the streets. You can make different sizes for kittens & puppies (many rescues are pregnant when they enter a shelter), cat-sized blankets and anything up to the size of a Great Dane, to which a baby blanket is about right. I have never heard an animal complaining of a choice of pattern or colour schemes, and if they have found those mistakes, they have been too polite to mention it. :)

    • @sheepishlysharing
      @sheepishlysharing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brilliant! And you're so right... animals ARE too polite to complain about such minor issues! I love this post!

    Here is what I do with my scraps. I take one scrap yarn and one end I tie a knot with another scrap yarn end, and just keep adding till I think I have enough yarn for a project. I roll the yarn in a ball. You can add more yarn to your ball by tying yarn to the ball yarn. Then I make my project with my scrap ball yarn. I like to keep the knotted ends on my project for decorations .

      I do the same as well. I hate wasting of any kind so I use those little scraps. Here’s a sweet little story. Years ago I crocheted a teddy bear out of a ‘magic ball’ . I had sat it on top of the piano and basically forgotten about it. One day my granddaughter, who was 2 at the time saw it. She said, “Grammy, I really like that teddy bear. “ Or something similarly cute. I don’t remember exactly now. Of course our babies get what they want. LOL So I got Patches down, gave him a good bath and he’s been sleeping cuddled up with her every night since . She doesn’t go to sleep without it. She lives in a different state and we don’t get to see each other often. I like to think Patches reminds her of me.

    Hi Margaret.. I just came across your excellent channel! I've been a crocheter for over 40 years and never knew that tip on how to calculate if I have enough yarn for a row... what a game changer!! I've always just used the yarn and then frog it if I run out.. not so much fun if you're making a bigger project or several rows of color. Thank you so much.. I love listening to your sweet voice and simple, easy to follow tips. In my 60's now and still love crocheting for charity as well as friends. My favorite thing to do lately has been to make hats in team colors and then finding the team's patch on eBay and sewing it to the front. It's something that is so appreciated by the sport's fans I know and has also brought me some business when their friends want one too! Take care.. I am a new subscriber. I have found that if you lay your knitted garment down flat and run your yarn across 4 times, generously, you will have enough to knit a row. If it's a circular project like a hat, you would measure around, of course.

    I know I’ve already commented but you seem like such a wonderful person to talk to. I would love to meet you and knit with you! Thanks for posting, you definitely gave me some ideas to make some hats. I will keep in mind about the neutral colors and no waste! Very interesting.

    I love playing your videos as I crochet mindlessly. thanks for making them and thanks for keeping your older videos up. I like to make afghans with my scraps. I live in an old farmhouse in Wisconsin and we always need something to keep us warm in the winter!

      Well, thank you for watching and chiming in here in the comments, Linda! I love knowing I'm not "alone" over here just talking to my camera! Ha!
