As you know, when we moved from London to Southampton in 2021 we planned on eventually getting a dog. It's the penultimate instalment of our ongoing diary as new puppy owners.
We are bad diarists. It's now February 2024 and it's been a couple of months since the last diary. It's been a tough couple of months [for a number of reasons] and marshall is now huge. Catch up on how he's been. We start transitioning him from the raw food to @YearsUK He's now at puppy classes and has discovered the joy of snow!

During covid we adopted Larry a 6 month old pup who'd lived rough on the streets in Bulgaria.
I fell in love with him instantly and he bonded with my wife pretty quickly but it took him 18 months to come to me which at times was really tough.
Now he flies up the stairs in the morning when we open the bedroom door and lies next to me on his back, legs in the air and wont go anywhere without his morning belly rub and cuddle.
You also realise a dirty carpet or a suprise poo you've just trodden in , isnt the end of the world and youd rather haveva dirty carpet than no dog.

Awww. That must’ve been a long 18 months for you Richard. We’d like nothing more than for Marshall to be comfortable and relaxed in the living room and bedroom so that we can spend evenings with him, but he just won’t settle. He scratches at the sofa and carpet or goes on a bite fest, so we end up having to shut him out. It’s heart breaking. Hoping he will grow out of it.
Your mornings sound wonderful with Larry (and such a great name!) - we hope we can get there at some point.
I’ve had dogs for 20 years now and all this is so relatable. I currently have a boy Bo, he is a bed pisser! I have to have baby gates in the bedrooms and sometimes he will piss when we are in the bed! Gets me down! But we love him and it is infrequent touch wood!

Of times it’s happened to us it also got us down. So frustrating. Glad it’s infrequent though. We’re expecting things to get worse as soon as Marshall hits puberty, which should be any time now... the dog trainer warned that as soon as he starts cocking his leg to wee the fun really starts 🤦🏼♂️

I’ve raised 2 human males successfully and never had a dog just rabbits but I can see a dog is very similar with needing all your time and patience ! Marshall is gorgeous like his daddies. Xx

Yes! Thankfully many people want to come say hello to him... and he’s been known to do an excited wee when they do so... sometimes it goes on them. Oopsie 🤦🏼♂️
Marshall is beautiful. Hang in there, it gets better! Marshall reminds me very much of our springer spaniel who must have thought his name was something far worse than Oscar from what I spent most of my time screaming at him 🤣 (he’s 15 1/2 years old now & a brilliant dog)

Wow, he's grown so much! When i first started watching i thought you had another dog staying with Marshall. He's adorable. Early years are challenging. Good job you haven't got a budgie. Our dog ate ours! 😳

I think anyone who has raised a puppy can relate to everything you’re going through. It’s tough and sometimes you wish you’d never got a dog but it is so worth it in the end. My dog Teddy was a naughty puppy and I can remember times when I thought I hated him. It took about 18 months for him to settle down but he was the best dog. Really loving, smart and funny. He was my best wee pal and we had a wonderful bond. Everyone loved him. He died a few months ago, he was nearly 14 and I was devastated. You’ll get there and it’ll all be worth it and you’ll have a lovely companion you can’t imagine being without.
Oh Louisa, so, so sorry that Teddy has passed. So lovely (and reassuring) of you to share your experience. Even though days are still a challenge with Marshall we can’t imagine life without him. We hope we have what you had with Teddy. 🫂
Hang in there guys! You have 2 years of puppy behaviour and mischief. Golden Retrievers love water, they love to run and chase, and they will dig. It's in their DNA. Keep working with dog trainers to get him to not pull on the leash or to jump on people. It will work if you keep at it with daily training. Best of Luck and don't give up!
He is absolutely gorgeous it is hard at first but it does get easier, I have 2 cockerpoos and the love is so unconditional they are my fur babies xx

Hi, great to see you all again. Can't believe how big he's getting. He's absolutely gorgeous ❤ I remember thinking we'd made a terrible mistake when we got Rosebud. There were so many times i thought i was hopeless, i struggled training her and did think of giving her up. Don't get me wrong, I'm so glad i didn't, but at the time, it just seemed like a constant battle every day, always pulling things out of her mouth, stopping her eating the furniture etc. It's hard work. I honestly thought she had a death wish with some of the things she tried to eat 😂 She's 9 now and is much calmer but still gets up to mischief every now and again, i wouldn't have it any other way 😊

Thank you guys for being so honest about your experience so far. We're thinking of getting a puppy and I feel like I know more about what we're getting into now! x
We wished we’d seen at least one puppy video along the lines of ours. None of the ones we watched had anything like what we’ve experienced so we were convinced we’d done it all wrong... and then when we started to google “my golden retriever is the devil” ALL the stories came up and we discovered what we were experiencing was pretty standard.
Not sure we’d get another puppy - we would want to side step going through this again - so would consider a rescue dog.
Hope you have an easier experience when you get your little one! Having the spring /summer will be on your side... never get one in the autumn or winter as the weather is not your friend!
thank you so much for your videos. This is the first video we have seen of raising a new puppy that relates so closely to our experience of getting a new puppy! It is so hard but ultimately very rewarding. And does get better...saying that out cocker spaniel 4 years later is still much the same...

And we’re confused why all the videos we saw before we got Marshall were all super positive!!?! Did make us wonder what we’re doing wrong... and then the comments over this series have reassured us that our experience is quite common, John.
@@MrDavidMrIanYes, my mum used to breed golden retrievers when I was a child and I thought puppies were easy and simple things to look after. The realisation dawned on me about 6 weeks into having our own dog that I had absolutely nothing to do with looking after them back in the day.

My goodness I can’t believe how much he’s grown!!
We’ll likely be adding a new pup to the family later in the year as we lost our old girl recently and this is just reminding me how much hard work puppies are 🙈🤣
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Not sure we’d go through it again. An older door, yes, and maybe (possibly) a different breed. But thankfully (hopefully) we won’t have to any time soon.
Whatever you decide you’ll be loved unconditionally (until you take a toy away or cut off a tag so they can no longer gnaw on it 😂)
@@MrDavidMrIan thank you. She was 13 which is a good age for a Dalmatian but it still breaks your heart.
We have indoor cats that we show/breed so we don’t really want to risk an older dog just incase there are issues with them getting along.
I’m sure we’ll jump in hearts first and then I’ll be swearing for the next year or two about how much work it is 🙈🤣
We have been through all the same things with our little boy Arnie. He is now nearly 2 and has calmed down a lot. He likes walks but goes absolutely mental when he sees another dog. We are taking him to Centre Parcs in the summer, we hope he doesn’t scare off the wildlife. Keep going guys, you’re doing great.

@@MrDavidMrIan When my GSD was a puppy he was much the same although he was bigger, i think he was a little more calm the Marshall. Keep up the good work and eventually he will be the greatest dog going.

I have a golden retriever she is now 3 yrs old. She was crazy prob until she was around two then calmed but now at three she is lovely . Goldens love to ignore you at times and just give the side eye 😂 we live in Australia and she loves the beach but only to paddle up to her waist she doesn’t like to swim!

There are currently glimpses of wonderfulness that brings us regret when it doesn’t last... it’s tantalising and taunting us into what we could have! 😂 Thanks for sharing your experience x
You’re welcome. If it helps anymore I did remove my girl Bella from puppy/dog classes as I found the dogs just playing and charging about made her more hypo. And also wanting to be too playful to any dog when walking her. I just walked her calmly with treats and to quiet open spaces for a run. She learnt to be less crazy and she bypassed dogs without getting over excited. I learnt this from a dog trainer online who said to make a dog less hypo to remove them from other hypo dogs and dog parks . They can still be sociable on a calm walk.
It’s only tough when you are doing things right. Shows how caring and loving you both are. Great to see 👍

Hi guys your doing a great job with marshall, he's so cute, totally agree with you about the raw food and salmonella it's a debate my husband an i have he says it's better for them raw but i pop it in the microwave for 4mins an cook it,an Reggie our boxer loves it cooked, hence him weighing 42kilo😂 keep up the good work with your fur baby❤

aw he’s so big now!! 😍 I totally get the puppy depression though, I had kitten depression when I first got our kitten Peanut last year. She was an absolute terror. We had her in one room so that she wouldn’t roam the whole house, but because of that if either me or hubby left the room for a minute she’d meow and meow and meow so loudly, would start ripping up the carpet and everything, it was tiring! I feel silly saying it because she’s not a baby but it was still tiring. She’s still a bit of a terror but she’s definitely a lot better and manageable now especially as she now has free roam of the house now 😂

Cheers Lee... we’ve both had days where we could have walked away, but thankfully not both on the same days! Every day is something new for sure! And new food is going well so far. He loves it. And he’s already on more as he’s even bigger now 🤦🏼♂️
