    One thing I really like about lakes being a barrier between planes of existence is that it can be applied to own real world. If you think about it romantically we live in an ocean of air with an ocean of water underneath us. Imagine a fish popping it's head just above the water or a deep sea creature being captured by air ocean beings. That sudden shock of seeing the unkown probably would send anything mad.
    I would love to see The Shadow of Yharnam, the Forbidden Woods and it's emphasis of snakes being looked into and maybe find the link why you also find those same guys in the Nightmare of Mensis.

      Thanks for sticking around. The snakes really interest me. They seem to be another kind of parasite (seeing as they live in the bodies of hosts) similar to the parasite larvae that the Loran Silverbeasts spit out. There's also the fact that there seem to be enormous snake skeletons in the Chalice dungeons.

      There's a book called "The Grimoire of the Necronomicon" and in the introduction to the Old Ones, the author writes something along the lines of "Imagine fish swimming in a lake and you dip your hand in. The fish have no idea where your hand came from or where it will appear next nor can they discern what your full form could possibly look like based on just your hand. That is how the Old Ones are."
      Another form of this is the Flatworld scenario or a 4-dimensional object coming into our 3-dimensional world.

    Quick thing, the cosmic eye watchers badge says that the cosmos might be just above our heads. this to me shares themes with the Nightmares being layered, best seen with the fishing hamlet being above the hunters nightmare. So what if the eldrich truth is that this is all a dream, the dreams and whims of a greater being, maybe odin considering his omnipotente behavior. This would also bring a truth of dismissing the powerful beings that men are afraid of like rom and ebreitus. The truth is that none of the struggle matters.

    Finally found some time to keep up with all your videos! :D
    I love the Pthumerians and the little we know about their society, so it's great that you're digging deep into their history as much as possible. When I noticed that many pthumerians had the 'Scream' look on their face, I istantly thought of this passage from 'The Haunter of the Dark' by H.P Lovecraft:
    "Students (...) noticed the blurred white face at the westward window on the morning of the 9th, and wondered what was wrong with the expression. When they saw the same face in the same position that evening, they felt worried, and watched for the lights to come up in his apartment. Later they rang the bell of the darkened flat, and finally had a policeman force the door. The rigid body sat bolt upright at the desk by the window, and when the intruders saw the glassy, bulging eyes, and the marks of stark, convulsive fright on the twisted features, they turned away in sickened dismay."
    In the story, poor Robert Blake just witnessed the apparition of one of the many forms of Nyarlathotep after attracting the attention of the Outer God through a relic named the Shining Trapezohedron ;)
    In Bloodborne words, he witnessed the Eldrich Truth.

    Very interesting video !
    On the topic of water and its relation to the eldritch truth, I read something interesting yesterday. It's a development that Michel Foucault makes in his book "Madness and civilization" in order to understand the medieval ritual of getting rid of madmen by sending them away on a boat. He tries to understand the symbolism behind this practice.
    I think it's worth quoting at length :
    « Thus we better understand the curious implication assigned to the navigation of madmen and the prestige attending it. On the one hand, we must not minimize its incontestable practical effectiveness: to hand a madman over to sailors was to be permanently sure he would not be prowling beneath the city walls; it made sure that he would go far away; it made him a prisoner of his own departure. But water adds to this the dark mass of its own values; it carries off, but it does more: it purifies. Navigation delivers man to the uncertainty of fate; on water, each of us is in the hands of his own destiny; every embarkation is, potentially, the last. It is for the other world that the madman sets sail in his fools’ boat; it is from the other world that he comes when he disembarks. The madman’s voyage is at once a rigorous division and an absolute Passage. In one sense, it simply develops, across a half-real, half-imaginary geography, the madman’s liminal position on the horizon of medieval concern - a position symbolized and made real at the same time by the madman’s privilege of being confined within the city gates: his exclusion must enclose him; if he cannot and must not have another prison than the threshold itself, he is kept at the point of passage. He is put in the interior of the exterior, and inversely. A highly symbolic position, which will doubtless remain his until our own day, if we are willing to admit that what was formerly a visible fortress of order haw now become the castle of our conscience.
    Water and navigation certainly play this role. Confined on the ship, from which there is no escape, the madman is delivered to the river with its thousand arms, the sea with its thousand roads, to that great uncertainty external to everything. He is a prisoner in the midst of what is the freest, the openest of routes: bound fast at the infinite crossroads. He is the Passenger par excellence: that is, the prisoner of the passage. »
    I think it echoes many themes of the souls games

      I realise I'm 2 years late. Blacksky Eye shows how Phantasms can infest an eyeball, normally one that is owned by someone with a great deal of Insight. It essentially says that the eye contains its own pocket dimension filled with a constant meteor shower, and rubbing the eye releases them, so it's certainly possible that ones mind could have stardust-like qualities around it if it is "blessed".

    "Great volumes of water serve as a bulwark guarding sleep, and an augur of the eldritch Truth.
    Overcome this hindrance, and seek what is yours."
    It makes sense that when you "etch" this rune into your mind that the mind and body would become fortified; the rune serving as a bulwark to those who remember the words of the Great Ones (through Caryll's runework).
    It also sounds to me like a description of the body of water safehousing Rom, who is essentially an augur of the Eldritch Truth. When you defeat Rom, you are "rewarded" with a wider vision of the world around the Hunter.
    This is just using Rom as an example. There's a good chance that this is something that has happened in the past, without the scourge of the beast possibly. In fact, I'm sure it's happened before since the hunters continue to sustain the dream in what appears a never ending cycle until the player hunter arrives.

    My thoughts on the 'lake' runes was that the coma there before the 'end' doesn't make much sense if it where to say 'water guards sleep and an augur'. I am under the impression that 'large volumes of water serve as a bulwark, and also serve as an augur'. Someone that interprets the truth and you can observe, a go-between. Handy, but in the end an obstacle between you, and the truth itself.

    I think the Brain Fluid is literally a bulwark inside the collective Hunters' skull, a sort of blood brain barrier for Eldritchness. Redgrave has a great video on Caryll Runes, and how they're an attempt to capture the speech of the Great Ones, who can be thought of as gods in the sense that, in their native plane, they have the ability to speak reality into existence (the Hunters Dream seems like it was created this way, with Flora 'speaking' the Workshop into the dreamscape using things inside Gehrman's head).
    Still with me? Right, so, Brain Fluid, from which internal eyes are derived, was collected and condensed in the Research Hall in order to, basically, line-produce Madman's Knowledge. This would allow the early Church, or even pre-Church Byrgenwerth to delve deeper without succumbing to madness from the weight of this 'speech' which is, again, "Let There Be Light" tier stuff, at least under the right conditions.
    I would bet that internal eyes are wounds/burns/scars in the fluid caused by 'hearing' a Great One, and Caryll eventually worked out a way to recreate these wounds...mechanically, as it were. For Willem, Laurence, and company: since there was no real attempt to control for any variables when they started, Byrgenwerth could only figure out what was happening in hindsight, which probably involved a lot of looking at these eyes in autopsy and trying to figure out "okay, so Scholar Insertname took this kind of blood, went to that part of the labyrinth, has *this* design in his brain, and turned into that kind of beast..."

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting. I like the idea of humans having internal bulwarks. I need to go re-watch some of Redgrave's videos. I really wish he would come back to make more stuff. He's a genius. There's also the concept that the Research Hall was being used to create Blood Saints as well, seeing as Adeline becoming a vessel for Old Blood allowed her to attribute "legitimacy" to the Healing Church, which is something I'm really interested by.

    Something interesting for the community to think about in regards to what you said about the real life Sumerians; in the Bible there's several verses about the creation and the separation of certain layers mainly known as the firmaments and the heavens (plural). Now the Sumerians if memory serves, have the oldest recorded written works in human history, some +5,000 years old. Which means that like the nation started by Abraham they would have been around to hear of the creation stories. The Sumerians you said believed we were in a massive dome. This seems to check out with the Bible verses. Paul stated (when he was stoned to death) that he was caught up to the third heaven when he was told that his time on the earth was not done yet. Looking through all the times it mentions the layers of our reality, the bible mentions the heavens (the skies) where birds fly, the heavens (space) where the stars are hung. And then it mentions a third heaven. One beyond both of these. Psalm 14, chapter 8 verse 4: "Praise him, ye highest heavens, and ye waters above the heavens." I think this means there might be a layer like an ocean beyond the furthest stars. So far that beyond it is the third heaven. Where God dwells, assumedly. Like we're in a sort of snow globe, for lack of a better analogy. This would mean that the Sumerians in the same area as the jews would have a very similar origin story and concept of reality. One that the Bloodborne writers might have used as inspiration.

For future reference, Jew is singular and Jewish refers to traditions or behavior, but as a people they would be known as Hebrew, just like their language. I believe so, anyway. That's according to a friend of mine who is an orthodox Jew from the Tribe of Dan. Of course, he could be incorrect, too, (we're all human and thus flawed, prone to mistakes), but from what I recall from my studies of the King James translation of the Old Testament that sounds right to me.

    I still play the game to this day, and having all the games revisited again before Elden Ring made me realize how impressively but subtly connected all the games are.
    This is my personal belief through my own experience, opinion, perception, and some lore sources, but I personally believe the Eldritch Truth and the contact with the Great Ones are linked in a way I haven't seen anyone speak of yet. We see in the games how, just like in the Universe, energy is not destroyed, but changes constantly. In Demon Souls, you are contacted by a Great One after absorbing all the souls of the old kings, and in Bloodborne the Moon Presence is brought upon the lure of a Great One infant, which after being gave birth, an umbilical cord can be extracted. As we see through the games, soul power constantly changes, bringing upon new forms (fire, light, dark, crystal magic). These Soul Power even starts manifesting in blood like in Farron Legion, and Gael's blood after consuming the Dark souls of Man, given to the pigmy kings of the Ringed City.
    So, given this insight, what if the Eldritch Truth is the very origin of Soul Art, given through time upon the constant consumption of souls and blood?
    Thanks for bearing with my awful writing lol

    To me, the talk of seas and lakes and oceans are interchangeable with the cosmos, in speaking of not only space but different realities and dreams, for they all have depths that may be set but unknown to us who cannot explore them. The dome to me is a border between our own reality and the other ones that include dreams as well, but to see past it would drive one if they were unprepared or of limited imagination and intelligence.

After I looked closer they look like toothed-whale bodies; like dolphins or orcas. but they're found ALL over the dungeons at any depth. i'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

      I forget if there are a number of different models of the same creature or if they're all the same model placed everywhere in the game, and though it has a very serpentine-like body, the skull most closely resembles some kind of toothed whale. and thats what gets me. but maybe you'll be able to get a better look at it(im not in town so im unable to play) but im really confident is not a snake but some sea creature(im a creature design so i know lots of about this stuff). so yea if you need help with anything just shoot me a message

    Wonder if it is possible that bloodborne takes place after the age of dark and the age of deep from Aldrich visions, a time in which humanity has long sense forgotten the tales of flame and gods, a time in which those that can from the encroaching darkness have found their way not through their own, but through the barrier being disturbed, long forgoing their forms as they were or forgetting them entirely over the ages past, and like Gwyn before them they place a curse upon humanity, the blood in a way being connected to the soul(echoes of much stronger and just as addictive source of power), through this awakening the old gods have both awoken and begun to grasps at the light of this new age throwing everything into a repeat cycle as they are both awakening and remembering slowly what they are.

      By the way, a friend of mine told me that Rom was actually a student of Willem that managed to ascend to become a great one. I haven't found any evidences supporting this but it seems like an interesting theory. what do you think ?

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bunnies WithKnives It's possible. I think at the very least Rom was a person before he/she became a giant spider. You can pretty clearly see the outline of a human face on the "head" of Rom.

    • @WithBunnyKnives
      @WithBunnyKnives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably right :) The fact that he/she has so many eyes may come from the "Grant us eyes, grant us eyes" that Willem was so fond of. So, why does he want to "hide" the Bloodmoon ? What interest does he/she have in not letting the other great ones "come down" (so to speak) to earth. Am I completely missing something or just completely wrong ?

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bunnies WithKnives I think Willem was always the more responsible scholar. He had respect for the Great Ones, relatively speaking. Mensis is kind of the worst example of Human-Great Ones relations, with Micolash chaining up and torturing Great Ones and the like. I think that Willem is just smarter, in a way.

    A topic I would love to see explored in the future is Caryll, their identity and their relationship with the Great Ones. The whole topic fascinates me (and confuses me) to no end: how could Caryll, presumably a simple scholar, grasp the meaning of the "inhuman sounds " many of the runes speak about? Was this meaning branded into the mind of the runesmith by the Great Ones themselves, or did Caryll understand their words in a way similar to how we experience, say, music?

    • @albaroux
      @albaroux 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Laura Guglielmo I can't remember where I read it but I'm pretty sure Caryll's method of rune-work was just an alternate way of learning about the Great Ones without partaking in the Old Blood.
      With that said, it's possible that he studied those who partook in the Old Blood and simply recorded what he saw.

    • @lauraguglielmo
      @lauraguglielmo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes it's entirely possible, but still I wonder how he or she went about translating visions or impressions into symbols, symbols that have the very concrete ability to change those who receive them (I'm very much convinced that the runes do not simply work because of gameplay reasons).

    • @albaroux
      @albaroux 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Laura Guglielmo Maybe the "Left Behind" Great One (Ebrietas) has something to do with that? Wasn't Ebrietas the one who bridged the gap between man and the Greats?

    • @lauraguglielmo
      @lauraguglielmo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mhh yes that sounds plausible, and since Caryll is a Byrgenwerth scholar I suspect that Rom could also have played a part in that. I'd really like to have a reliable timeline of events, like: did Caryll operate before or after Rom's transformation at Byrgenwerth? When did the "discovery" of Ebrietas take place?

    Have you seen Last Protagonist's video on the Eldritch Truth? The term "Eldritch Truth" seems to be a product of translation, and the original word used is the same word that was used for the Arcane stat. So whenever you encounter the phrase "eldritch truth", you can easily substitute "knowledge of magic", or even simply just "magic" and you'd have an accurate translation. Might seem a little lame, but if you're used to living in a world where things make sense and have logical explanations, learning that magic exists and cannot be comprehended would certainly be terrifying.

    I wonder if it is possible to assume that the "eldritch truth" could be also a manifestation of a Great Ones. I'm looking particularly at Ebrietas the Daughter of the Cosmos. She is to belied, what the Byrgenwerth Scholars encounted underneath the Tombs. The Madness aquired by Dores could be a result of a contact between Ebrietas and him. What do you guys think of the idea ? I'm very open to opinions

    Something that has always confused me is the way we ascend to a Great One in the third ending. When we kill The Moon Presence is that the moment we find the truth, or at the end have we already found the truth and simply need a fully fledged Great One to die on our blade to give us up to a higher plane. Or does the Eldritch Truth have nothing to do with physically ascending at all?

      Papa Whitebeard I think we were already undergoing some sort of change by the time we fight the Moon Presence, as it leaps backwards when it tries to embrace us meaning we were changed enough for it to recognise that we were not fully human anymore. Shortly after the Moon Presence is killed, our transformation is complete.

    The Great Ones impregnated humans for offspring, since they were sympathetic to humans and hostile to the other great ones. Iosefka was pregnant( I don't know with whom), Queen Yharnam was pregnant with Mergo and One Umbilical cord you find in Abandoned Hunter Workshop and With Wilhelm. Now I don't know who Wilhelm was trying contact, anyway this last cord was probably beared by Gehrman making contact with Kos in the Fishing Hamlet, since he was the first hunter and maybe with an alliance was tasked to investigate the place. In the Hunter's dream, We battle Maria who is Gerhman's love interest and later the child from Kos's carcass. Kos and Maria are speculated to be the same identity just in different forms, thus Gehrman was in love with the Great One Kos and Orphan of Kos his child.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The following is the description of the Sage from the Future Press Guide book for Bloodborne (written in part and supervised by Fromsoft):
      "The Healing Church holds no regards for pious men nor saints; in their avid lust for knowledge they turned the once holy into the utterly abominable."
      Add onto this that these enemies drop Sages Hair and Sages Wrists, body parts of Blood Saints, trained vessels for purifying the Old Blood. These enemies are former Blood Saints of the Healing Church, offered to the Watchers so Tomb Prospectors/hunters/whoever could enter the Chalice Dungeons.

    • @Kaaniification
      @Kaaniification 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I see... but then why do they look like Pthumerians? I mean the body shape, the white skin, the face, just everything. That should mean the church could turn people into full-fledged Pthumerians, right? And I don't know if that's true.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dank Sloth Something I should have clarified in the video is that the "Pthumeru Look" does not only apply to Pthumerians, meaning the description you provided. Pthumerians are quite literally "superhuman," yet some of the enemies in the chalice dungeons fit that look and are not "superhuman," they are just "Watchers."
      My theory in the video was getting at the possibility that the look of the mouth and the eyes and the skin and everything was a bi-product of spending too much time in the Chalice Dungeons, discovering the Eldritch Truth, and going mad.

    • @Kaaniification
      @Kaaniification 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mitch L Hmm yeah, that's definitely a possibility. I mean they sorta do look terrified or as if they were screaming, almost like they encountered something horrifying or something that was too much for them to comprehend. Queen Yharnam for example is Pthumerian too and she doesn't have the "Pthumeru look". Definitely a good point you got there

    You use far too many non canonical sources that aren’t in game references. That’s inherently speculative by definition and thus bad lore hunting. Cherry picking any outside reference that suits a theory opens the door for anyone and everyone to do the same with literally any off the wall theory they can come up with. I wish you’d limit yourself to in game source material and cut out the more philosophical speculative portions. I think some of what you have here is solid but quite a bit isn’t.
