  • Do you use a smartphone? In Korea, you can see many people on their smartphones on the street, in the bus, in the subway, etc. While different people use different types of smartphone applications, there are several very common apps that many Korean people use. In this episode of Ask Hyojin, joined by Ben, Hyojin talks about some of the most widely-used smartphone applications in Korea. Enjoy!

    7 Must-have apps for Korean learners
    1. 네이버 사전
    2. TOPIK 원 (learn/study via tests; plus you can click any word within the test to see the translation!)
    3. Korean Super flash cards (choose general or specific vocab)
    4. Dongsa (verb conjugator)
    5. Learn Korean with Voice (vocab)
    6. KORLink ttmik app (fan-made app)

    When I studied abroad in Korea in the summer of 2012 I used 지하철 A LOT! lol It was so helpful. I liked how it showed the times the subway was arriving even when there wasn't any internet. I also liked that you can choose the beginning and ending point and it would show you the best way to get there either by time or cost. Also, to this day I still use 카카오톡 a lot to talk to my host family and friends I met in Korea.

    For music, a lot of my friends use an app called Pandora and others use 8-tracks. They're both free, but you can't really pick and choose the exact song you want to listen to. But I still like it!

    Wow, we have something that tells us when the next train is coming in a couple of train stations in NYC, but not for buses. That would be so helpful! Buses here are always off schedule. Your apps tell you where each bus stop is and the route? Amazing! In NYC, if you don't already know the bus route, you can get lost. Google maps will show you where to go for the first and last stops of your journey, but not where ALL bus stops are.

    I know that a lot of people in Manchester do watch TV on their phones because we now have apps for particular broadcasting stations (like BBC, ITV etc) that show tv programmes that have previously aired, so if you miss a show you can just use your phone (or even just a laptop) to catch up with the show ^-^

    I live in London, England and I do use my phone occasionally but my tablet mostly to watch some tv. Mostly my Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese dramas. There are some really good apps ie crunchy roll, viki, drama fever and KBS World. These are really good with English subtitles and available with free and upgradeable to paid accounts for additional features like no adverts

    I leave in the states and we use all the apps that she was talking about and yes I watch tv on my phone. Maybe not live tv I have like 70 apps that I use on the regular if not more. I use kakaotalk to talk to my friends in Korea. But in the us we just use text message not really any big messaging apps like kakao.

    Here in Mexico, most people use social media applications like Facebook and Twitter, and lately Instagram too. Besides that, we use Whatsapp a LOT! Hahaha... and we use ViKi application to watch Korean Dramas xD when we're not in home or near our tv or tablet!

    Very helpful, but alas, many of these apps are not available in the foreign Apple app stores (I tried US and German). Looks like I'll have to get a Korean Apple account to get them. However, I did find other similar apps.

      My friends have explained that Kakao Talk is useful for talking to friends internationally--that is, if you're in America, you can K Talk a friend in Korea at no extra charge. Moreover, it integrates with some other apps by the same company, is more customizable than texting, and has a lot of fun emoticons.

    • @drsnowmon
      @drsnowmon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Why do some Koreans switch between 반말 and 존댓말 while talking with me? I'm not talking about a group situation, but rather a one-on-one conversation. It doesn't usually happen to me, so I'm somewhat confused.

    • @Oomsham
      @Oomsham 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switching is quite frequent. It isn't very sparse. Sometimes I also switch to 존댓말 for the same reason I use formal language with my friends in English, but I don't think that's the case here..

      just change your ip address. or use some other program~ my friends use netflix here (in korea)

    • @Oomsham
      @Oomsham 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Find a way to get the Netflix App (I was able to download it on my phone's Chrome browser).
      2. Get Android Open VPN (I think that's the name)
      3. Set it up with a VPN service you have. I use hidemyass.com.
      For PC, I recommend downloading Torch and getting the Hola Premium subscription. Netflix streams in HD at my apartment with that (while playing WoW on a Korean IP address). Hola Premium is $5 a month. You can get it a bit cheaper if you buy 12 months at once. It doesn't change your IP address, so it isn't a full-out VPN. I use hidemyass for things such as managing my American PayPal account.

    This is the 3rd video I have seen with Ask Hyojin, and though I like the content of her videos, I must say, I find her speech VERY annoying. She has a bad habit of making an inflection in most of her declarative sentences by raising her voice like everything is a question or something.
