Videos like this remind me of how ambitious I used to be. These are the products I used to dream about and aspire to, now they're just names of products from my memories. I couldn't afford that stuff then and now that I have the means, I'm not interested, only curious. I've grown old and have learned to be satisfied with what I have, but these videos are super!
Fully agree with this sentiment. I can afford a fully customized system and car - but have kids and real estate instead. Priorities have shifted. I’m closer to retirement age than my teens when I lusted after this gear and have next to no interest in it anymore. Anathema! 😂
Wow!!!!! I ran these in a system back in the 90’s in one of my cars! Amazing amps! Changed them for Xtant amps when went to SQ. the Phase Linear Aliante subs were incredible when paired with the amps! Kept the subs and ran them on the Xtant in the SQ install along with old school Cliffe Designs components
I hadn't seen one of these amps before and I couldn't help but smile when you a said "Piece of kit" I hear that phrase often when watching airgun videos from the U.K. Great video and a gorgeous amp! Love your channel.
Very high in the cool factor being a rare old school amp but not very efficient at all. Then again, most class AB old school amps aren't efficient either. You took the words right out of my mouth in the fact that it looks a lot like an Adcom. Overall, a very nice piece. Thanks for the great video, BigD!! 💪🔥
Back in the early 90s I had a pair of Phase Linear 6X9 3 way speakers in the back deck of my 1976 Oldsmobile Toronado. I remember there were 2 separate sets of terminals on them with a metal jumper you could cut to bi-amp them which I did. I used 2 amps. 1 was a Majestic that I think was about 100 watts per channel (bridgeable to a claimed 500 watts) to run the woofers and a Frontier amp that was about 35 watts per channel (amp says 140 watts) to run the mids and tweeters. It actually sounded decent. The speakers (and unfortunately the car) are long gone. But I still have the generic amps. The Majestic is currently in my 75 Grand Prix running a set of Infinity 2 way 6X9s. Still sounds decent. It’s good enough that I can play it on the highway with the windows down and the T Tops off without it distorting and still be able to hear and enjoy it. No subs or even front speakers. The Frontier amp has been sitting in my garage on a shelf for about 20 years but still worked when I took it out.
I would totally rock that amplifier. For 98 that amp seems very innovative for the time, especially with the preouts, fan, and phase adjustments. Although with Phase in its name it better. 😂
i still have a phase linear 2 channel amp that my brother brought back when he lived over seas for a few years back in the late 80's.. i still use it to this day in my daily driver after all these years it still works great although i live in arizona so its not subject the humidity and such where i live at 7500-8000ft elevation it rarely see high outside temps above 80-90degrees but I've always been impressed with the sound quality and its output power i never knew it wasn't available in the u.s.
@calvinevans8305 nope I'm on the eastern side of the state.. I grew up here in the white mountains of Arizona but you definitely had the closest guess out of everyone thats tried
I remember reading into these amps back in that day, but never actually saw any of them. Did waaaay better than I would have thought. I did have the Graphite 12's
Hey Big D, great video - I was waiting for someone to get hold of one of these amps! I have 2 of this series in the UK, the 0.4kw and the 0.8kw (2 channel & 4 channel respectively). Both brand new in box. I have opened to test them, wasn’t sure if they would make rated power or not but they seem to perform quite well. Will send you some photos on FB and tag you so you can see what they look like! Thanks again
The "fuse" is just a bus bar. The pot lowers the power supply voltage to allow higher current at lower impedances. Very likely you could rotate it slightly until the amp stops misbehaving at the impedance you use.
Way back in the 90s I had a good friend who had two 12s with clear cones in the hatch of a Chevy Nova. They made a late 80s Chevy Nova hatchback, look it up lol. I swear they were Phase Linear.
Never seen that one before. I had a Phase Linear Turbo 150 purchased for $3 at a swap meet (in working condition). I'd hazard a guess that it was intended to compete with the RF Punch 75. Sounded good, so I put it in my dad's Nova to power Kicker KS690 6"×9"s.
I have the Monoblock 8 in my collection. Of the 0.6 KWs and the 1.2 KWs 12 each and of the 4.8 KWs 10 and 1 0.8 and 2 0.6. For the KWs you need the external power supply 4.8KWs. As far as I know, Phase Linear came from Italy.
I think this was a completely different brand than what was owned by Jensen. I’ve seen many amp models in the EU dating back to the 80s with this logo/brand that had no connection to the US home audio brand. So it’s hard to say if it was first in the EU as car audio and licensed to the US by Jensen or coincidental brands. It’s confusing to say the least.
I hope we don’t sound like the “back in my day” dudes.. but….. The 90’s felt so much better for car audio. Maybe bc we were just starting to drive and building systems..? IDK, but even when I was 10 years old, my favorite thing to do on a weekend was talk my parents into was taking me to Circuit City so I could go listen to the stuff I saw in my Car Audio magazines. I literally started getting 1-off pieces over the years when they had clearance sales and stored it all in my closet with my wiring diagrams of every positive and negative speaker terminal all over the car, to the amps to make sure the resistance load was ok, and then RCA’s up to the Kenwood double din- flip down Head Unit!! By the time I got my dad’s hand-me-down 1991 Cutlass in the late 90’s and turned 16, I had collected two JBL 12”s, built a sealed box with mdf I cut myself at the hardware store, an MTX line out converter, Rockford Fosgate Punch 360 sub amp. 2- 6.5” Infinity Kappa component sets and a Rockford Punch 4-channel amp for them. Those were the days !! 😂
@wal2 These ratings are still not within spec. They are tested at 1.0% THD, but most are rated at 0.1% down to .06% THD. Can the dyno be adjusted to these parameters?
Was there something amiss with the HC circuitry ? I'm not sure I understand the thinking but here's my take on it. The amp can only supply so much current to the speakers before it goes into protect or distorts grossly. The HD allows the full voltage from the power supply given the speakers are high enough impedance (low current). But for small impedances the voltage rails can be reduced. The current limit is still the same, the power supply can only source so much but theres either less distortion or no OC protect kicking in. The trade off is that the amp is now power limited with high impedance speakers because the voltage isnt there. So why didn't it make rated power in HC mode at 1 ohm ? It seemed to almost like HD (?high dynamic range?) mode better. Is HC mode for really really really low impedances ? Or is broke ?
If you find a Coustic Power Logic amp it was a 2 channel bridgeable amp seriously think it stated 198 watts bridged lol fairly big amp little bigger then a Skar RP 1200.1 curious though on it's output i remember slamming a couple MTX blue thunders at one point and a Pyle pounder pro i ordered out of MCM electronics catalog talking 27 years or so ago. Think it was the 460 model maybe what a great amp back in the day only 2 people i knew that out boomed me was this dude Mike with 4 kicker 12's on a Orion amp and this dude Bryan had a kicker .5 ohm amp pushing x2 hart professional 12s that absolutely smacked.

The alpine embarrassed his taramp 3k. If the efficiency wasn't as bad as it is, I would definitely use class a/b on my subs. People don't realize that technology has changed, and that's why class d is so cheap, but try finding a 1k class a/b for $100 dollars. I promise you won't
I have 0,6 + 1,2kW 4channel amps that ran on the 32 or 48V power supply in a separate unit. They have way more power than advertised, they run low ohm load and are true power hogs...
Not a good idea doing that to an amplifier who's capacitors have been left in a discharge state .hook it up to a variable power supply and bring up voltage slowly to help reform capacitors .I left my adcom GFA,,555 off for 10 years and ran into that problem .had to replace all the capacitors .

No bass boost 👍 having a true 500rms back then was $$$$ awesome video and review as usual.
Definitely one of nicest looking amps ever.
Mehhhh my top 10 doesn't include Amps . Even back then, were Unobtainium prices an sorry inmyop ppi fill the top5.

I had a 0.6kw phase linear amp and a couple of phase linear aliante limiteds back in the late 90's. Epic kit
The sides look like there is a type of attachment point. Like a groove or channel to slide something into it. Great test run on a unique amplifier.

Very cool amp! It's got that special feel about it. That mesh top makes me nervous though. This amp wont survive any dirt around on it.

In California there were plenty available. My uncle ran a few of these with some Cerwin Vegas in a 1990Mazda 626.
Thanks.

This looks like the new DS18 SMD amps kinda!
Mmm wonder where the new SMD got their amp chassis design from 🤔
Hey! No sound demo? Dat my fav😢
Nice amp
so jensen can make amps that outperform the ratings, they just usually choose not to - noted
I think the Euro version of Phase Linear wasn't a Jensen company
2:59 already in and I am intrigued by how different the controls are.
But do it bump doe?
❤❤❤
My 2nd system I had 3 of those on 3 15s..Had I known more about electricity and how amps work they might have lasted..
Does It Bump Doe ?
