  • Hey All! This is one of the most instrumental heavy songs I have heard from them. It was so rocking and groovy and excellent. Loved it.

In this album they fully demonstrate how easily they can reach very high levels as musicians, not 'a boy-band' at all, but real artists with uncommon qualities. Their range of creativity is unique and so underrated. They would have been number 1 so many times. Instead, they've been forgotten in some countries and their songs are never on on the radio or music programs. That's OK, they'll be the best ever!

I’m getting goosebumps watching you react to all the elements that have given me chills for 28 years listening to this. Paul waaktaar said they recorded this live .. wonderful stuff !!! He said he wrote the song after going back to Norway and feeling that he doesn’t belong there anymore! Another brilliant a-ha song from my top 3 a-ha album!

Hi Mike, thanks for your reaction to this song.
You are right in feeling it sounds American. This album was recorded in Prince's Paisley Park studio with American producer David Z .
Paul Waaktaar explains the meaning of the lyrics of this song like this:
"“When we came back to Norway around this time, that was the first time I ever felt that Norway wasn’t my home any longer. After all those years abroad, the cord had been cut.” and:
“The song is also about how I’m not good at dealing with other people, so people always try to read me and find out what’s wrong. They will go, “What’s up with him? Why is he in such a mood?” So, the title Cold As Stone is about trying to rouse myself from that state. I would think, “Gee, is it really like that? Are those people correct?” It’s a bit of self-analysis.”

Mark thanks for your support and encouraging me to discover a-ha's music since the very first reaction! The first song I reacted to (and ever heard) from a-ha other than Take On Me was that Manhattan Skyline reaction. The funny thing is I ONLY checked it out in order to do a reaction for a Manhattan Skyline cover song. I never knew I'd be delving fully into their catalog, but I am so happy I did. They are now one of my favorite bands on this channel.

@@Yeedeed glad to hear it buddy, as you are discovering a-ha don’t stick to one sound, even though they are most know for their synth pop. sadly they don’t stray to often into the rock sound in their albums, but they do so more during their live gigs. Memorial beach album... is more organic and dark in a good way.
"Lamb to the slaughter" and "Locust" are two songs with a hypnotic and haunting music. Same with the previous album and the song " East of the sun, west of the moon". The atmosphere of the song " Early morning" has something with The Doors's sound. The clavierist of the group, Magne Furuholmen, change the synth sound of the 80's for the piano in the 90's; " I call your name" and " How sweet it was" are two songs that we can enjoy his pur talent. Brillant musicians and an amazing vocalist! A-ha, so special!!!

    You're back again
    You roam the streets
    And crack again
    You're back again
    You're travel-worn
    Standing here in the town
    Where you were born
    It's not your home
    The mirror sees you
    So alone
    Cold as stone
    Yeah
    You're not your own
    You feel a chill
    Go through your bones
    You're not your own
    There's something wrong
    You call you doctor
    On the phone
    He's not at home
    You leave a message
    After the tone
    "I'm cold as stone"
    Emerald green neon lights above
Sapphire red falls on you below
    Cold as stone
    Emerald green neon lights above
Sapphire reds fall on you below
    You're back again
    You send a curse out
    In to the night
    You're back again
    You're travel-worn
    Standing here

Hi Mike! Hello from Russia here :-) I came across your channel earlier today, and I must say how grateful I am for your sharing your ideas about a-ha songs. This band has coloured my life in ways I can't begin to describe, and I've listened to them since around 1992. It's fascinating to see how much you have to say about the tracks on your first listen - you do have a great ear for detail and take seconds to grasp some finer points. For example (if no one's mentioned this before) - "Cold as Stone" as well as the entire "Memorial Beach" album was indeed recorded in America, in Prince's studio Paisley Park, and has an American feel to it. As for "Manhattan Skyline", its verses and chorus were, in fact, written by Paul and Magne - so it's almost two different songs, like you observed. I can't help but say how nice it feels to see someone like you discover their music with such enthusiasm - it brings back memories of my own first-time discoveries from years ago. Finally, if there's one song I'd like you to have a look at - it's the little known "Sox of the Fox" (live from MTV Unplugged).

Hello Mike, my name is Marje, and I’ve been following your reactions with quite a few a-ha songs now…without leaving any comments of my own, but am now convinced that you “get” this band, which is very gratifying as I’m an old woman who has been a fan since I first heard and saw them on Top Of The Pops on BBC TV with their second hit…the one that went to #1 in the U.K. …not Take on Me, but The Sun Always Shines On TV. I was never a teenage fan in love with Morten & co for their looks, I was actually a married mother of 2 children and older than the three a-ha guys anyway! No..I fell for that sound they make..especially Morten’s vocals, but they’re just the icing on the cake really, because the songs are the real stars of a-ha, the songwriting of Pal and Mags are in a league of their own.
You will find it impossible to pin down a favourite song of a-ha’s the more you delve into their catalogue, today you will think it’s the one you’ve just listened to..but tomorrow it’ll be a different one, from a different album or period. My favourites change all the time, but a few are always perennially at the top of the list…Memorial Beach, Slender Frame, The Swing of Things, and the one that got me hooked all these years ago in 1985..The Sun Always Shines…it still gives me shivers up my spine every time I hear the opening bars, especially live in concert…and no matter how many times I hear it I know I always will! Btw..I’m now 70 years old. P.S. I love Cold As Stone ..and you need to listen to the title track and How Sweet It Was now too, because that whole Memorial Beach album is possibly their best. Oh and now I think of it you also need to hear Lamb to the Slaughter, Dark Is The Night and Move To Memphis too, because the whole damn album is fantastic!

I get you. I think l have maybe 70 favorites. I alter between them, so it’s almost like the most recent one I have listened to becomes the biggest favorite. Until I listen to another one and that takes over. 😅😅 I’ve seen people making list of the top 5 or top 10. I couldn’t have made one of those. At least it would only be valid / genuin for half an hour. I love their diversity so it’s always songs that fits your mood, needs or preferences at a given moment. Pretty perfect to me.

How dare they say that!
