Personally, I love Angel in the Snow and Locust. But it was their least successful album, and resulted in their 7 year hiatus before returning triumphant in 2000...

The dark side of a-ha in this album that I love as much as the other albums. It is all the richness of this group which offered us different styles throughout their career.

Now you've captured the essence of a-ha, Dave. The music spans a wide spectrum, and this is part of it. I really appreciate the music from this period, how can you not?
Pål says about Take on me that it is a calling sign to people - they caught people's attention, and invited them in to see the rest of the collection. You are absolutely right that it is a double-edged sword, because with those songs many people lost interest in taking a look inside the doors. That is the reason why I have been bothering you these weeks with a-ha. You showed interest after hearing Minor Earth Major Sky, and now I see what you liked back then - the groove of that song. I didn't know you, but by showing interest you caught my attention and I decided to show you and your audience that a-ha is more than 80's synth.
This period in the early 90s shows a new a-ha. For Pål and Magne it was a kind of a return to the rockier Bridges (their band before a-ha), and at the same time they entered a phase where Morten got to show another side of his voice - and which many of the fans love. Morten also has a wonderful voice in his lower register.
In "a-ha The Movie", he says that he felt that Pål was looking for a different type of vocalist than himself, which I can understand. There are many vocalists who can handle this field, but there are not many who can perform what Morten can in falsetto. If I had been him, I would also have wanted to give the world this gift, and left it to others to sing for Pål's songwriting at that time.
In any case, in retrospect it is great to have the music from this period. I myself am glad they later went back to music where Morten can sing himself into my heart and soul with his wonderful voice, but I can understand those who would have liked more music from this era in the band's history.

Yeah I was an 80s fan in Ireland who 'grew out' of them around 1989 (I was 16) as I grew in to rock and metal. I saw a few clips in the 90s on TV and still had a soft spot for them, but essentially ignored a-ha until I saw them perform on UK TV in 2000. Went back and bought the albums I missed. Actually, "Memorial Beach" and "MEMS" got delivered to my office on a Friday afternoon and since we were working through the evening on a project, the team asked me to put them on. It was my first time hearing both albums and the non a-ha fans I worked with were as surprised as I was at how good the songs were. I remember Jimmy really liked "Sun Never Shone That Day". No one liked "Barely Hanging On" though.

This album was done at Paisley Park and legend has it that the legend himself was aware of the proceedings.

The song is about Paul returning to Norway after being away for so long being a major pop star.

The studio version of this song is really atmospheric, but their live performance of it during their 1994 tour where they merge it with a modified arrangement of cold as stone is phenomenal.

You are spot on regards they being a lot more than what people thought they are. Back in the 80’s it took bands quite a a long time to hit it big, a-ha thought that would be happen to them so they could build their success and give them a platform to do more if they wanted to sound like, but take on me exploded all over the world and that became wrapped around their neck until this very day, the video is approaching 1.6 billion views on TH-cam. The memorial beach album was recorded at prince’s paisley studio. Paul who wrote cold as stone more just wanted to do albums rather than be chart single driven. Morten wasn’t very happy with the direction of the band changing their sound. After this album they stopped for 7 years and done solo work before returning in 2000 with a new album.

In an interview last year Morten name checked "Cold as Stone" as a song he really liked. But, conversely, yes he did not think the music created in the 90s was "from the right place".

@@nearvanaman Morten explains in "a-ha the movie" what he meant by it not coming from the right place (perhaps it is only in NRK's series that contains some scenes that the film does not contain), namely that instead of moving towards something they fled from something else. Which is actually true.

@@ahkkariq7406 That's very interesting. It makes sense and is a typically philosophical comment from Morten. I think they found a great middle ground (between rock and electronica) in the 2000s and maybe Dave will try a few more of those songs in the future.

There wasn't enough support from the record company and the media when a-ha went down this route because they thought you couldn't market handsome boys to teenagers with this type of music. They were so wrong about that. Many many a-ha Fans loves the Work of them from the 90ies.
Some have written that Morten didn't agree with this direction, but I don't think so. That was certainly not the reason for their separation. In the 90s, Morten was generally no longer in agreement with the whole situation of being a star, with all the hype around him, with the way he was marketed. I can remember an interview where he said that, when they were on stage in front of 200.000 people (in Rio) he lost the sense of it all, he felt empty. Can't put it word for word but analogously, he meant that he felt drained, which I can understand very well, he was hunted by fans and the media for years, treated almost like an object and reduced to his looks (is even today), although he and the rest of the band are much, much more than a teenage band.
All three are incredibly talented musicians and artists, they are also incredibly interesting as people. For example, I'm just realizing again how much Morten has been active since the 90's in environmental protection. He has been trying to get governments to invest in solar energy and electric cars for over 30 years and not only with words but also with deeds. All the band members have a lot in common about the environment and social problems. Morten had contributed significantly to the liberation of East Timor. I can imagine how disappointing and annoying it must have been when Morten wanted to talk about these topics, for example, but the reporters only had questions about his looks.
A-ha's bad luck was that Paul and Mags looked pretty good and the vocalist was/is 🙈 just way too beautiful.
The media didn't pay any attention to the music, which in the end was one of the reasons why the band wanted to distance themselves from all the hype and from each other for the first time, in a period of their careers where they came out with the best music they ever made

Oh I so wish they had explored this sound much more...but unfortunately Morten don't agree with it and feel it isn't earnest enough. Well...he is wrong.
