- Stimela is a South African Afro-fusion band, founded by Ray Phiri in 1982. They created Fire, Passion and Ecstasy (1982), Look, Listen and Decide (1986) as well as the controversial People Don't Talk So Let's Talk (1992).
In 1985 Paul Simon asked Ray and drummer Isaac Mtshali to join his Graceland project, which was successful but also helped the South Africans to make names for themselves abroad.
Ray was to collaborate with Paul Simon again on Simon's Rhythm of the Saints album, which saw him perform on stages such as Central Park and Madison Square Garden as well as appearing on top television shows in the USA.
This Clip is taken from the Stimela DVD "Live in concert 30 years".
DVD is available in most music stores in South Africa.

The loss of Ray Chikapa Phiri is a great loss not only to
the south African music industry, but
the worlds in general. His contribution through
music both in South Africa and beyond has always been immense. He was
such a marvel to watch, a great legend indeed. I feel honoured and of course
gratified to have had an opportunity to watch Stimela many a times in Botswana
during those 80s. I still remember that album 'listen, look and decide' that
captivated Africa and the rest of the world for many years till to date. He has
always been an inspiration to many of us including the music fraternity of
South Africa. He may be gone but his music will continue to inspire many
including today’s generation, this great son of the soil was a marvel to watch,
his music saw us through those hard times of racial segregation, but remained
to inspire us. I remember the track; Whispers in the deep, it still remains one
of those great tracks. May your soul rest in eternal peace bra Ray.
As Malawian seeing a son of Malawian doing great was wonderful to us too, rest in peace brother
