    amazing video! i have an anth major with archaeology minor, but i’m transferring to an epidemiology grad school! i do not EVER want to change this decision of mine, it really broadened my perspective and literally made me a better person. anthropology is so enlightening and i hope people would start to notice how holistic and amazing this program is ❤️
    edit/addendum: anth also made me a better writer! profs are a lot more strict with writing than stem profs thats for sure!! 😭

    Thank you for this video! I am a junior in high school and I have been trying to decide on what to major in. Anthropology has always called to me, but I felt an obligation to do something else just because people say it doesn't pay well. I find anthro really interesting though, especially cultural anthropology, and this is really encouraging me to follow that :)

    I am mexican, and in my case study Antrophologý and in this moment Etnohistory, has been a wonderful experience. Undesrtand why the people do the things that do and analise the cultural difference in especific contexts is for my, is the most important thing in my life so far, but keeping mind that the laboral field is complicated....

    somehow this video ended up in my recommended videos (funnily enough since I am a biochemistry major), however I took intro to anth and forensic anthropology just because it's so fascinating to me. this video was really cool to see another perspective of another major having the debate of if it's worth it or not (biology, for example), but what my professors always tell me are to do what makes you happy and the rest will follow :)

      I love this comment! I don’t often hear from other majors on this channel so it was awesome to hear from a bio chem major! And I am in complete agreement, we have to do what makes us happy

    Stumbled across this video, I'm graduating from Community College as a an Anthropology major and transferring soon, i can definitely relate with the fact that sometimes you go in to a major thinking its something you want to do but when you get the opportunity to work in that field its just not for you. I was an automotive major and worked in the field and from the experience i learned it wasnt for me i wish it didnt take me longer then I thought it would to figure out what I wanted to do but fell I love with the thought of studying primates on a trip to Colorado to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo when I had an interaction with a baby orangutan through the glass that separated us. Sorry this so long of a comment but definitely will try to use some of your tips.

      Hi! This was absolutely lovely to read! It really shows that getting involved early helps people to find exactly what it is they want to do. Thank you so much for sharing (and I am so jealous of your experience with a baby orangutan)!

    Thank you so much for this video! After one year of studying business administration, I decided this is definitely not for me. As you said in the video, I got to work an office job for 3 months, and it wasn't right for me, it's not something I want to do in the future. I knew I love to travel, meet new people, learn new languages, immerse myself in their culture. But at the same time, I was still interested in other topics, like politics, economy and psychology. I really didn't know what to do, and I didn't know which major could give me that. But then I found Cultural anthropology and development sociology, and after I read through the program, it clicked right away. It resonated with me and what I want to do so much! So I applied for it and now I'm waiting for a response (hope I get accepted haha). Anyway, thank you so much for this video, you reassured me that it is a right choice for me :)

    Make an update video 6 months later to this video to see where/if your mind has changed. I also graduated with a degree in anthropology and I did it last summer but it is difficult to make worth it after college. I have been able to make it worth it however by going to an archeology field school, getting my field training, making connections while I was in college, and now I am happy to say that I have an archeology job with a major engineering firm. I did not get this job until about 9 months after graduating (I probably would have gotten the job sooner, but I had to help my parents move across the country and the pandemic doesn't make it easy) but that is still better than some of my friends in other degree pathways who have been struggling to find engineering/computer science jobs. Jobwise, I feel going down the archeology path of going to a training school is one of the best pathways to getting a job in anthropology that is not staying in the realm of academia forever. Congratulations on getting your degree and good luck to my other fellow anthropology majors in getting those jobs

    Game theory is one of my favorite concepts in the social sciences. The connections to anthropology seem unclear, but I feel like most of the general public does not know who John Nash is. It's scary where the education system is heading.

    I'm not sure college needs to be for the purpose of work and making money. I suppose if the college experience costs a ton and you have to pay back loans, then it makes sense, but then what's the point of taking on debt just to have to pay it back.

    • @AliviaBrown
      @AliviaBrown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course! I’m sadly not super familiar with the new direction of cultural anthropology. What I do know is anthropology as a field has been slowly changing and expanding to consider a variety of different perspectives and cultures. It is no longer only a field where individuals visit foreign places in an attempt to understand the peoples of that place. We must consider ideas reflexivity, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, etc. Sorry this doesn’t answer your question and good luck!!

      Hey, I know this is too late but maybe it's still interesting:
      from my perspective we are coming to a point where we are not only reflective of ethnocentrism in it's power relations between field and reseacher and the role of the researcher - that has been criticized through the writing culute debate. I see cultural anthropology actually adressing how the identity of superiority of the "western world" or "white man" is continued -amongst other things- through the claim of objectivity of western science and medicine. Thus I think researchers will be more involved in taking action- though research and beyond- to combat the injustices it is witnessing (and helped create in it's very beginning). We see this as well trhough the fact that the scientific community is growing to include work that is not only from countries that are former colonial powers. Also obviously the internet is something gaining in sigificance due to the obvious reason of it's rapidly grown impact. Here question of how to reseach, including diversifying our apporach to each media plattform, moral questions but also possibilites and boundaries of valid research online and how they relate to offline reseach are becoming relevant. I tried to keep it short, there is definetly a lot more to say, it's just a very interesting question.
