Hei Alivia, your videos are fantastic! thanks for taking the time🙏 at the moment I am considering a master either in cultural anthropology or sociology and I found your video whilst looking for insights:) thank you!
Currently taking anthropology as an elective because it sounded interesting. I was not prepared for all the readings and essays 😩 thank you for simplifying topics in your videos!
Am so happy to have found your channel while working on a term paper 😭 I really love how you explain stuff 🥺 I hope you'd get to talk about Economic Anthropology too, I kinda find it confusing huhu
Hi! This is so sweet, I am so glad! And economic anthropology has been on my list for a while now. I think this was the push I needed to finally do it!
@@AliviaBrown aaaa yes please, and do take all the time you need! for now, I'll be binge watching your previous videos while I power through this semester 😭😭😭
I'm coming here from today's video. Somehow TH-cam chose this one to recommend and I really enjoyed watching it. I'm truly into the last quote about diversity. It's amazing that we can actually study it so deeply nowadays. It reminded me of how we talked about the last names in different countries, while I was teaching. Well, let me share a piece of discussion. In my country, we add -ova, -ov, ev, -eva to the ending of the last name and your last name can be different from your parents'. Why? Well to pay respect to the grandfather from father's side. So my last name is different from my parents and siblings. And it used to be some kind of fashionable trend two decades ago. Some families still use it, tho. Moreover, our father's names are written in all the documents. It goes like this 1. family name (+ov(a)) 2. first name 3. father's name (+oğli/+qizi). Before the Russian empire made colonies here, we didn't even used to have family names only father's and grandfather's. And even tho I'm keen on forensic anthropology, seems like I'll have to dive into cultural anthropology too.
Hi Alivia, I just watched this video and it was really insightful. I have a bachelor's degree in international business and economics and I’m considering doing a Master's in Anthropology and Sociology. I'm really interested in the humanities side of things and hoping that I will be able to work for an NGO (such as UN, WHO, UNICEF, etc.) in the future. Please share with me your thoughts, if any. :)
I'm so happy to hear that! Part of my current job is actually working for a non profit and I really believe studying anthropology helped me get there. Definitely trust your gut, but I have really loved the opportunity to study anthropology!
Salins work and Mintz as well blur the line on the idea of living culture being the key. You could make the point that Mary Douglas does as well. Cultural Anthropology is breaking down so many silos that it is more of a vibe or approach (that pushes back against ethnocentrism) instead of an traditional 19th or 20th discipline at times.
Jack, that's so exciting! Anthro 1 is the class that confirmed my interest in anthropology (as soon as I finished it I declared my major). Who is your professor? I had Dr. Fessler but I know some of the other profs are great too. Good luck and let me know if you need any help on anything!
This is AMAZING! When I was a freshman taking anthropology courses, I felt like my mind had opened to a whole new world of possibilities. I love hearing from fellow anthropology students and I hope you love it as much as I do!
@ Im gonna try to think of an example that hopefully helps you understand because yea its pretty confusing. You know in egypt cats hold symbolic importance to the people and culture, lets say we didnt know who cleopatra was. An anthropologist would want to know how the cat influences the present-day egyptian culture and why the cat was specifically chosen to represent that country. And how does the cat have influence on its people, do they act more respectful towards others? More superior? More sassy? Because there are human statues there that are based off of cats, so its like a human and cat mixed into one pretty much. So by that youd be studying cats of egypt and would be studying how they influence present-day egyptian behavior, music, and dance.

Hi! In many ways cultural and sociocultural anthropology are quite similar. However, what they each focus on is slightly different! Sociocultural anthropology looks more closely at social institutions while cultural anthropology has an emphasis on cultures. I hope this helps!
There are not many cultures such as Tiktok, digital media etc.. The American culture for example, as other culture contain behaviors like digital, social media, TV . But these behaviors are within a culture. They become part of it. A culture is based on 4 major principles. Religion, family, money, and government. Some have a mix of these, others are are focused on one or two principles.

Can you slowly list the different types of cultural anthropology I did hear you say participant observation 😊
If only living cultures,
Then why we study cultural evolution in anthropology?
Because it also studies how the culture in the area today came to be. The primary focus is how history led up to that present - day culture
@ so then, at the end of the day it studies old cultures.
