This scene of Ash breaking down is so raw. It's emotional in the most violent way. The audience knew what Ash went through, Dino knew first hand what he went through but it's the first time we see Ash verbalize it in such a way. He was always very matter of fact about it, we could sense the sadness but it was hidden away. In this scene, Ash is beyond the point of sadness and all his repressed feelings come out when he finds out that Dino plans on adopting him. Dino will officially own him in the most disgustingly ironic way. This scene is so disturbing yet so essential to the story and Ash's character. It's for scenes such as these that this story will never EVER leave my mind.
This episode just hurts, but it is done so well. One thing I want to point out because I think they did a really good job with it - Dino says that Ash has "acute anorexia" but it's not really "acute". Throughout the entire show, there has been hints that Ash has an ED. When he went out to eat with Max, he ate a salad and Max mentions how little he is eating; Ash makes a sarcastic joke at Max's expense and they continue their convo. Also, Ash doesn't like hamburgers and his favorite food is a salad (which doesn't mean he has an ED but given what we know and the fact that a teenage boy does not typically prefer salads, it's likely a hint. I also think it is partially because he uses his body as a weapon and in order to do that, he has to make himself "desirable"). He also tells Blanca that he doesn't want to be a "muscle-man like him" despite being a gang leader. Given all this, it makes sense that at a time where he has no control at all, his ED (a disorder that is regularly focused on control) flares up to a point where he is living off IVs.
Also, when he's at the hospital after killing Arthur he says to Max that he was worried he would get fat for laying in bed all day. And when he's eating with Eiji he mentions that although he has grown a few inches, he hasn't gained a pound, which also might hint that he keeps getting skinnier as a consequence of his ED.
The height difference between Sing and Blanca cracks me up every time... Blanca is 6'5" and sing is 5'3-4" meaning that there is an OVER A FOOT DIFFERENCE. There are more jokes resulting from this in later episodes and the contrast is hysterical. (As a short king myself, I can both sympathize and laugh my ass off)
I love that Caleb calls Yut Lung a peacock; he is the peacock with the best drip, though. ;) I honestly love how petty and dramatic he is, and his dynamics with Blanca and Sing at this point. But GOD, Ash and his VA in this episode. That breakdown, you almost have to look away, because it's just so heartbreaking. Seeing Ash at his lowest point here is just so tragic. I am so ready for you all to get to the rest of this season. It's going to .... go places.
Sing is one of my favorite side characters and he is soooo under appreciated. He is so strong and smart for a 14 year old and a gang leader. You can tell how much he idolizes Ash and is very similar to him. Sing is calculated and puts thought into his decisions and moves and it’s clear he really values connections and relationships. I really love his friendship with Eiji (especially in Garden of Light). Also, Blanca and Sing are one of my favorite duos simply for the crazy height difference. *Spoiler Alert for Garden of Light* It’s so cute how Sing becomes super tall and big (very similar to Blanca’s stature) when he’s an adult!
So much about this episode is amazing. How Dino is so dilusional and evil in adopting someone he abused in so many ways becasue he veiws him as if you created/ owns him. Ash's breakdown so well handled Eiji doing his best to resuce and support Ash Blanca and Yut Lung hypocrsy
Two thoughts on Dino taking Ash to the public adoption in a wheelchair and lap blanket: Dino's really not thinking about his public image with his allies and adversaries with that move, only cementing his control over Ash publicly, and... well... there is a LOT of easily detached and weaponizable parts to a folding wheelchair, not to mention how much can be hidden under a lap blanket (although that part is pure wishful thinking that Ash has someone, anyone, on his side in Dino's cage that might have slipped him a sawed off shotgun or machete or something.😢)
Man, stuff is really starting to get wild. I'm scared for yall to watch the last couple episodes. This really is a masterpiece of a show, but it breaks your heart all the same. Hold on to your tissues for the last of it
fantastic reaction and analysis as always. ash's breakdown is one of the best scenes in the entire show for me, in a heartbreaking and horrible way. most of the time, i cant even watch it all the way through or read the subs because its just so raw, heartbreaking, and disturbing.
I have lost track of how many endings of Banana Fish they have conjectured so far while commenting the episodes. It's so fun to listen to them! So much food for plot divergent fanfictions... THE SCENE in this episode is a VA's masterpiece. It upsets my stomach every time I watch it. Most people are confused about the reason Blanca is so deferent towards Yut-Lung and blame him a lot. But I think that Blanca keeping his eyes shut is a big hint about him acting a part. He is clever enough to have Ash's respect (he's not just strong!). He is a clever adult dealing with a teenager with too much power (Yut-Lung). I believe he didn't resort to murder because he thought that he could outsmart the boy easily.
I love this episode for how raw it is, but I also hate it for the same reason. Ash's breakdown is so heartbreaking and triggering. Last week was kinda emotionally rough for me, so when I saw the this update I legit "Nope. Nope, I can't right now. Nope. Gimme a sec (2 days) to prepare myself to watch this."
