I like both. I do enjoy your commentary. Even if you are not teaching. You are like the Bob Ross of carving. Thank you for putting out all of your videos.
Part of the reason that I'm a subscriber is that I enjoy hearing you when you carve.... and you don't necessarily have to be talking about the carving! You could be telling stories about being with Joe or Shawn or whoever... I would still enjoy it and I would still try and carve what ever it is that you have for us!! Keep'm comin'!!
Thank you Doug. 👍 I preferred this one over the short one with the music. By far. And while I do enjoy the very one sided conversation of the talking demonstrations, this was more natural to me. I am often carving when I am watching your videos. This had the feeling of a couple guys sitting on the porch carving away each working on a project. Sometimes the best conversations have no words.
Hi Doug. I am at the low end of the talent scale. I enjoy the videos like this one where you show the steps and pause occasionally to show us progress or make a point. People with more talent may find videos like this slow so I think all your videos regardless of speed or speech will help someone. I watch all the videos. I learn something from each one and hope you will keep making them. Stay well.
I just wanted to thank you for your instruction on carving and for others like me getting into this DON’T get discouraged and here’s why.....Just watching videos isn’t enough because I picked up my piece of 1”x1” x 4” piece of basswood and at first I thought this is a piece of cake!!!! Well I thought my carving knife was not getting shape and not cutting right well my little Pike is starting to look like a fish!!!!!!! Yippy to me!!!! I wasn’t using enough pressure to make my cuts and I am feeling awesome!!!!!! And I owe it to you and your words of don’t give up and keep at it!!!!! I got to say put on a glove!!!!! Lots to learn still but I am getting enjoyment finally and my blades were sharp!!!!!
I really like listening to you talking your way through your carvings. You have a great talent and very relaxing demeanor. I enjoy watching you work too....so I'm going to have to say...the slow video! Thank you for all your Inspiration and keep up the great work!
I sat here and got so I grossed in watching you carve. . Each stroke of your knife (knives and tools) seemed like a magic instrument your hands used to create beauty out of a block of wood. Thank you once again for sharing your craft with me. I am so appreciative of your talent.
The slower version is better. People watch to learn from you so the slower one is much more helpful to them. I have been carving for 10 years and I still enjoy watching your videos. Anytime someone asks me about carving I send them to your channel. In my opinion you are a great teacher. My only criticism is the lack of instruction on this video. And I agree with some of the other people that I miss your banter will you carve. On a side note I would love to see you and Joe on a fishing trip.
You never cease to amaze me! For me I prefer the slow but with talking. As new guy I really enjoy how well you explain and describe what to do and how to do it. Thx!
I super enjoy your videos, sir! This is another one for the awesome file for sure. I first started whittling little thin snakes but then I seen your "five minute Wizard" video and you not only inspired me but now I'm hooked on your channel! Much love and gratitude for making such awesome content!
Slow version is obviously easier to keep pace with, but the fast version got the concept across quick to those of us who watched you carve the smaller gnome previously. I like everything you have ever done Doug. I will say folks dont learn about the Carver or his details about the why of certain things unless you are talking, but there is a different audience for each way you present it. I love all your videos regardless of topic Doug. You have been an absolute inspiration and a blessing to me. Thanks for doing all you do!
Commenting before watching: I like that you have the quick version with the fun music as well as the longer version for your followers who are trying to learn how to make one of their own. It's a good compromise. I will enjoy both,. Keep up the great work! :o)
Love to watch you carve ... And I think you are trying a variety to see what everyone likes best. So usually I refrain from commenting seem to enjoy just about anything you do but miss the rambling and explaining of why and how ... Also would love it just a little closer view ... But again seem to really enjoy anything you do.
As much as I appreciate the quick time lapse vids, I prefer to see the fuller versions. We can certainly speed up these ourselves if we wanted. And... I wouldn't have noticed the fly friend you have :)
The fast video is great for Instagram...but this slow (real time) carving is what I hope to see here on TH-cam. Not a fan of silence however - you've got a big set of fans who enjoy your explanations and insights!
I just discovered your channel and i am in love with it! You are a great teacher and the videos are extremely well made and interesting. Thank you so much!!
I enjoyed them both. The short one with the music was fun. If I had to chose, I'd pick the longer, silent version though. I watch TH-cam on my PC or my TV, so I don't mind the length, and the quiet solitude is cool. Folks watching on a phone or similar device may prefer the shorter one.
For this type video and easy carving, the quick way is nice and straightforward. You have similar videos that are at regular speed if anyone wants to learn basic carving cuts.
I thought I was watching Kevin for a minute, pine and just the sound of the knife, but it was a Helvie and not a filet knife. I much prefer the slower vids with either you talking or the knife sounds. Great video.
As a beginner I would appreciate the help of your video that tells me how to do this, either way, they are enjoyable to watch. The other thing I noticed is the cuts were a bit deeper than normal, and I don’t think with my level of talent I could do this without wearing a glove, not intended as a criticism of your work
they all have carroter to them LOL would just love to see you put some in Shawn's woods sometime just sneak on in and plant one here and there for him to find or Cali to find it LOL
I don't know how you carved a gnome in 3.5 minutes last time. I spent way more time applying Band-Aids trying to keep up. The pace on this one was a lot better.
I like and watch both! However if i had to choose id like the slow version best. I started carving because of you and your videos. I feel like i can learn quite a bit more with the slow video.
To knock off the imperfections I don't care what others label as ethical rules of carving not to use sanding for cleaning the project but the details from knife skills should remain. This got as quite as my crazy wife can get 🤪 But some visual skills are built. Thanks for teaching me Sir
So I will try to keep this short. I watch most of the videos on TH-cam at 2x. There are a few individuals I watch in normal. I started watching your channel for the camping adventures. I will watch those in normal all the time. I have stuck around for the carving videos. Its not exactly an interest of mine. That being said what I do find fascinating is seeing what comes out of the piece of wood. In that regard I enjoy the longer format because it lets me see more of the reveal. I do admit that I will tend to still watch these in 2x speeds. The Short versions are good and I agree with others that its great for mobile, but I don't do mobile. So if I had too choose between short form or long form.... the long. (even if I do watch in 2x) [ Hmm, not that short]
I'm very glad you made a bigger gnome to protect all the little ones! And am I imagining it or is there a Santa's elf hanging on the wall to your left who is smoking a ceegar?
Doug to say on the top of the list, you really need to talk about something , your stories are cool , the carving you are working on is nice, but silent is boring.
doug, what is the best grade basswood to carve from, i ordered some a few years ago, have since then used it all, it seemed to be pretty hard for carving. what do you suggest. thanks . bob c.
It's not like you say stupid stuff while carving. I enjoy your commentary. I watched both and a few words in the silent one might be nice. For example, when you sketch lines on the work, it helps to tell the audience what you're thinking, what the lines are for. I can go either way but it occurs to me that you could film one carving session in silence and then have a voice over for the talking version....then you'd only have to do it once. Maybe that's what you did! Looks like the same gnome face.

I love the silent videos (it's such a relaxing background) but I also love the helpful tutorial tips in the speaking videos!

I like seeing a man get lost in what he is doing and enjoying himself.
Thank you for posting both versions
Thank you Doug. 👍
I preferred this one over the short one with the music. By far.

I enjoy the silent channels the most. Love the gnome mate. !!

Hi Doug! Great to see you again ✋
Another interesting topic, slowly showing the technical difficulties of wood carving
I prefer the long version. The more Doug, the better!!
Thank you , Mr Doug
Love your audio files- i can relax and follow along without someone yacking in my ear while i'm carving- another great video!
👍 thanks again Doug ! Appreciate this second one !
Oh he is so cute. I love your work nd enjoy so much of the silent nd slow way. ♥️♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍
Great Silent Doug video! Been a while since you’ve done one and it’s relaxing to watch. Thank you!
I like the slow version best, and a little talking wouldn't be a bad thing either 8 )
I really like listening to you talking your way through your carvings. You have a great talent and very relaxing demeanor. I enjoy watching you work too....so I'm going to have to say...the slow video!
Thank you for all your Inspiration and keep up the great work!
Doug is the Bob Ross of wood carving. I learn a lot and feel soothed at the same time. He’s just great!

OH my goodness, the color just made the whole thing pop. especially the red hat. :-)
Hi. You make it look easy.😊👍
Old "Garry the Gnome" looking somewhat resilient in his new adaptation. Thanks Doug!!
You never cease to amaze me! For me I prefer the slow but with talking. As new guy I really enjoy how well you explain and describe what to do and how to do it. Thx!

I like this video. It’s easier for me to see the detail with the larger version.❤️🐾
Yes! Slow & silent, perfect to sit back, watch and relax 😎 💤 p.s. those close-up carving shots are pure gold! Nicely done 👏

But Doug a big joy of your TH-cam’s are your musings while you carve. And ho is you lovely wife. I miss seeing her on the weekend Open forums.

It's a good compromise. I will enjoy both,.
Keep up the great work! :o)
I enjoyed both
Great job on the gnome Doug !!! Well done !!!
Oh I like this one!nice change of pace and size
Thats brill, well done Doug, love it

Another great video Doug ..your the best
Just love your videos. How about another Doug & Sophie video soon? (pleeeese!)
This was super chilled. Looks really fun and satisfying, although I don't think my hands could take that kind of punishment.
I like your commentary on your videos...
For this type video and easy carving, the quick way is nice and straightforward. You have similar videos that are at regular speed if anyone wants to learn basic carving cuts.
not seen other video yet but this one good ,great work as always
I love the part where Doug struggles with the grain of pine. Relatable....
I still say that that’s very nice! 👍👍👍💯💯💯
Great job, Doug! Show us the painting too!

I'm all for THAT!!
I like both.

Fantastic work!! I do like to hear your voice a little, but the carving sounds are very relaxing!
Another great video thank you
I enjoy the longer ones, maybe some juggling mixed in?
I like and watch both! However if i had to choose id like the slow version best. I started carving because of you and your videos. I feel like i can learn quite a bit more with the slow video.

Nice!
I like the slow version best, and a lot of talking ....all your little comments make your videos so nice to watch ... they mean a lot
Great!

Супер, молодец!!!👍🏼👍🏻👍👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿🌍
I'm very glad you made a bigger gnome to protect all the little ones! And am I imagining it or is there a Santa's elf hanging on the wall to your left who is smoking a ceegar?
Both are nice, prefer a little narration even if it’s not instructional
Excellent video as always. What is the make of your bench mounted vice? Regards.
Thank you, I was wishing you had made a slower version
What brand or what set of carving knives/palm tools and spokeshaves would you recommend to someone with little experience ?
I started some wood spirit cypress knees. Was wondering if you could take a look at them and give me some tips. They need improvement
Doug, wood, has a draw knife..... I know what I'm doing for 22 minutes now.
Is pine softer than basswood? Even with my knives freshly opened or honed, my blocks never cut as easy as yours seem to!
Do you save your shavings for anything particular? I saw the bucket on your desk
Is that white pine your carving?
Nice video. What type of wood you using?
What kind of wood are you carving? Do you carve lifelike Chess Pieces?
Where do you buy all your carving tools ???
Doug can you please carve a Nikola Tesla? Your work is fantastic!
im back doug.
👍👍☕ like them both, a little chatter or not, do ur thing... Did u get kicked out of your room in the 🏠?
Doug to say on the top of the list, you really need to talk about something , your stories are cool , the carving you are working on is nice, but silent is boring.
I miss those dulcet tones guiding me along
No opinion.
But I do like the larger carving.
👍😁
doug, what is the best grade basswood to carve from, i ordered some a few years ago, have since then used it all, it seemed to be pretty hard for carving. what do you suggest. thanks
. bob c.
I’ve never seen a grading -some say northern basswood is best -some say winter cut is but I just take what I can get
Slow, but with the great instructions please..🤗
👍
Doug
Will you comment on your injuries. All healed or suffering through?
A bit of both lol
Do you ever sell any of your carvings?
Dumb question....What type of wood is this?
Description has that info
If you sell that gnome , about how much would you charge , just a ball park? I am thinking of things I can sell.
Definitely prefer you chatting to us while whittling...
Put ASMR in the title and get 1 million views. 😊
DOUG ARE YOU ON wifi im not sure if mine is setup on my new pc is rite.
It's not like you say stupid stuff while carving. I enjoy your commentary. I watched both and a few words in the silent one might be nice. What about a scary evil gnome?
That would be awesome
May I ask what knife are you using ?.
Description has all the details
kazm Tablet I really do not understand your reply sorry .
