The Captain Jack Sparrow of early Australian rock. Jonathan James English (26 March 1949 - 9 March 2016) was an English-born Australian singer, songwriter, musician and actor. He emigrated from England to Australia with his parents in 1961. He was an early vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Sebastian Hardie but left to take on the role of Judas Iscariot in the Australian version of the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar from May 1972, which was broadcast on television. English was also a noted solo singer; his Australian top twenty hit singles include "Turn the Page", "Hollywood Seven", "Words are Not Enough", "Six Ribbons" and "Hot Town". Peace out.

Jon English, a contemporary of John Farnham, also had that touch of vaudeville clown about him. When rock tours started drying up he found a new home doing Gilbert and Sullivan stage productions, Jesus Christ Superstar and television comedies and dramas. He retained his down to earth personae and the ability to belt out a tune until his untimely death in 2016, aged 66.

My mum had the BIGGEST CRUSH on Jon English, only rivalled by her (still) crush on John Farnham!
Not surprisingly the hauntingly beautiful song, ‘Six Ribbons’ from the Aussie miniseries Against the Wind, which Jon played the lead role in, were amongst my earliest memories as a 4 year old.
I’d bet that mum still has the numerous VCR tapes she recorded ATW on so she could rewatch it for decades after. And she/we did.

The first time I saw and heard this man was in 1975, as a 12/13year old school girl, my school choir teacher arranged for us to go to the show Jesus Christ Superstar, I saw him on that stage and fell in love for the first time in my life... I cried buckets when he passed away...we keep losing all the good ones...he was more than just a rock singer, he was so talented...he acted in mini series, tv sitcoms, and guest starred on a lot of aussie tv shows and wrote an amazing rock opera called Trojan...he is very sadly missed...

I've never been a fan of musical theatre, even as a kid, then one day in 7th grade music class, everything changed. The music teacher played us a VHS of The Pirates of Penzance (1994) starring Jon English as the Pirate King, and I was completely in love. He's a powerhouse in Pirates, if you ever get the chance, do yourself a favour and watch the whole production.
Unfortunately the music teacher followed it up with Les Mis (this was the 90s so not the Hugh Jackman version), which I hated with a passion to the point I can't even remember the plot. So still not a fan of musical theatre, and Pirates is the only musical I own on DVD lol

He was one of my favorite Aussie actors growing up in the 70's and loved this song too. I particularly liked him in AGAINST THE WIND. Sadly he had issues after heart surgery and died at 66 years of age in 2016. Really nice vibe when thinking about him. He married very young and stayed with the same wife - which I admire greatly. He was involved as a composer, music director, arranger - whole heap of things according to iMDB and yet it was all uncredited. He played Judas magnificently in the 1970s stage musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. This song SIX RIBBONS is from AGAINST THE WIND: th-cam.com/video/MTLADgOah0I/w-d-xo.html

The way musical theatre has changed in the last decade - and how prepared companies are to fund new, unique ideas written by relatively unknown artists in the musical theatre industry - it probably would get funded now. Back then it was all Lloyd Webber etc or previous successes that were remade. Maybe someone will grab it and make something one day - but sadly he’ll never know.

So tragic to have lost him way too soon.

Out of this song 1982 he wrote "Paris" a Rock Musical [1987-90]
    "Oh Paris" > th-cam.com/video/ZF_OVclBbsE/w-d-xo.html
He also wrote this as a main song from his TV show "Against The Wind"

Like many of our good and famous Australian artists, Jon originally came from England when he was a kid. Jon played Judas in the first stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Australia. He was also the star in the Australian mini series, 'Against The Wind' and has a hit with 'Six Ribbons' from that series. His other hits were, 'Turn The Page' (1971), 'Hollywood Seven' (1976), 'Six Ribbons' (1978), 'Get Your Love Right' (1979). He had many songs on many albums.

Think this is live in Melbourne, 1980. There was a memorial concert for Jon after his death. He was born 26th March, 1949 and died 9th March, 2016, aged 67, which would make him aged 31 at this concert.

Jon also starred in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, 'Pirates Of Penzance', 'The Mikado' and 'HMS Pinafore'. He was so funny in them. He even had a comic bit with the orchestra conductor.

I grew up in Australia (proud St. Louisan, now) and was fortunate enough to see Jon English live in various shows and productions about a dozen times over the years... he always had an absolutely incredible stage presence. I just adored him!
When I was a child, he was on a TV comedy called "All Together Now" (1991-1993), a sitcom about a failing rockstar and his family. It was actually pretty good iirc.
So glad to see that you enjoyed his rendition of Turn the Page!
Australia lost a legend when Jon English passed away.

An extraordinarily multitalented man who died by mistake. Sometimes I take his death as a proof of the universe’s indifference. try six ribbons, Hollywood seven; and his partner in Australian Jesus Christ Superstar in the early 70s, Marcia Hines. (Shining and oOh child particularly).Respect to Bob Seger.

RIP Mr English! (loved that you called him that during your reaction to his voice/performance).

My very first concert was Russell Morris supporting Jon English at the Palais in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria when I was 12. Russell had warmed up the audience with Real Thing, Wings of an Eagle and several other hits, then he handed the stage to Jon and I was blown away. I had seen him the year before in Jesus Christ Superstar where he had backflipped and cartwheeled across the stage during the song Superstar.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jon a few times as well as seeing him live in Jesus Christ Superstar and Pirates of Penzance, his TV show All Together Now and in concert. Such a wonderful guy, so kind and a real gentleman. And yes I got his autograph several times.
I have his rock opera he wrote called Paris about the fall of Troy both the original and extended and its a prized possession. I cried when I heard he had died. Such a loss. Singer. Songwriter. Actor. All around good bloke.
    Try Behind Blue Eyes.... electric!
    Hollywood 7.... awesome!
    Minutes to Midnight
    She was Real.
    Handbags and Gladrags
    Six Ribbons
He was affectionately known as "Ol' Black Eyes"
The studio version of this song is a banger.

Once again it is such a pleasure to watch you enjoy the work of another beloved Aussie performer (or rather a performer we claim as our own - like Jimmy and John! 😁) I was hoping you'd discover Jon English. A unique voice and a lovely man. Like everyone else - recommend Six Ribbons and Hollywood 7. Contrasting styles that show off his range!

Landed the role of Judas !!!....Jon has always looked like one scary mutha but he was a gentle giant. A family man...Our Aussie talent didn't get very far back in the 70's except for Olivia....such a shame you get to hear them after the fact. But our Delta is s...hot right about now and you know it :)

Loved Jon English! Saw him in the 1994 production of Pirates as the Pirate King (th-cam.com/video/aYbIk6aXuUs/w-d-xo.html). Not necessarily something to do a reaction to but he was such a great entertainer! I remember all the encores during "With Cat Like Tread" - th-cam.com/video/C1dJxH0zLWY/w-d-xo.html . The audience was wild and the atmosphere was electric. You can hear it but you just cannot get the same atmosphere through the video.
