I am glad I wasn't the only one who found it scary. The ending frightened me even more than it made me relieved. Mission 5's level also frightened me because of the level and cutscene too.

Lots of Japanese games around the PS1/PS2 era were only in english even in Japan, Resident Evil, the first three Devil May Cry games, Silent Hill, etc. I don't know why but it was probably for immersion's sake.

It’s a shame this game was it released here in the US. I’m sure would’ve sold well. The voice acting doesn’t sound bad, either. I wonder who did which voices.

It has full translations and dubs in the code, because it was actually meant to be localised for other countries. However reception for the game was very unfavorable and they decided to not make the game leave Japan to not disappoint other fans

The Memory Boss, AKA Lugus, kinda looks like a combination of Getter Robo, Mazinger Z, Tetsujin 28, and an EVA unit from Evangelion, with a hint of Zearth from Bokurano. I wonder if that was all intentional

Nope, Japan exclusive. The game has localization for subtitles in multiple languages, but it was never implemented. It can be switched via cheat device or patch on emulators.
