So it’s a great opportunity for those who want to switch to Agile project management from the traditional waterfall OR if you are new in the project management space then CSM certification is a great way to get started. Even if you are not managing SCRUM team or you are not a project manager / SCRUM Master, I would still recommend getting the certification because the hands-on 2 day training will help you understand the concept better. The 2 day workshop conducted by the trainer will include planning and execution using Agile tools so it’s a great way to learn even if you are team member of SCRUM team.
And it's really really easy compared to any other exams, like PMP or other PMI exams. You can get your certification over the weekend, yes it’s that simple. Just spend a two-day or three-day in-person training offered by training partners listed in the Scrum Alliance . ORG website and you will have 2 day training and also an online test with 30 questions by the end of 2nd day and you will get your certification online the same day.
I can guarantee you that, if you put the effort in to just attending the in person training you will have your CSM certification.
At the end of that two day training you will have your certification. So it's that simple and I can guarantee you anybody who attend that training they will have the certification I have not heard of anyone failing the exam for in after taking those training because those trainings are very Hands-On and you will understand all the concepts of Agile, SCURM and KANBAN in those 2 days.
How to register for the exam / certification.
The first step toward your CSM is to familiarize yourself with the Scrum framework. I will put the link in the description of this video, this is just optional, but if you are completely new to Agile then the resources on this page will help you understand the framework. Then, attend an in-person, two-day (16 hour) CSM course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) where you’ll get a comprehensive overview of how to organize and support a Scrum Team. After the course, you’ll need to pass the CSM exam. After you pass the CSM exam and accept the License Agreement, complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile and enjoy the benefits of certification.
Exam Structure
There are only 35 questions and five of them are not score-able. i.e. those 5 questions are put in place for designing the next exams. So out of the total 35 questions only 30 questions will be measured and you have to score 80% to pass. That means you have to get 24 questions right out of the 30 scoring questions. Don’t worry about this 80% high scoring criteria, I am telling you, if you attend the 2 day training you will definitely pass, in case if you don’t pass for some reason then you will have two attempts within 90 calendar days to pass the test at no cost. After two attempts and/or 90 calendar days, you will be charged $25 for each additional attempt.
So the test is broken out into four sections or the questions will be broken out into four sections.General,Roles, Meetings and Artifacts.
And most of the questions would be around the roles in Agile. For my test I see there were 21 Questions out of 30 that was with respect to roles. So it is important for you to understand the roles of Agile or in general SCRUM. There were 7 questions on my exam that was under General topic, 4 related to meetings and 3 around the agile artifacts.
So I guarantee you that if you take the training you will get certified so don't wait just spend the weekend and spend that amount to get your certification.

Thanks. I followed your steps to register for the CSM course in my area and also passed the exam on my first try after the course ended. I stayed after the course and took the exam. Note, you can take the exam within 90 days anywhere so you do NOT need stay to take the exam immediately. The exam has been modified with 50 questions, where passing is 37 correctly answered and timed at 1 hour. The CSM trainer sets up your access to the exam in the Scrum Alliance website. An email is sent with your Scrum Alliance login credentials. After your initial login, it will ask for a password change, then your profile updates, followed by a button to start the exam. After completing question 50 on the exam, the “Save Answers” button ends the exam (there is another button to go back to other questions) and is scored real-time with pass or fail displayed. I also got an email acknowledging that I passed, and instructions to log into the Scrum Alliance website to accept the license agreement. Good Luck!

STEP 1: Visit Scrumalliance.org and click Get Certified from the menu. From the drop down select CSM
STEP 2 : On the CSM page, scroll down and click the 'Search Courses' button under requirements section.
STEP 3: Select your preferences for training - Date, Langauge, Country, time etc. This will bring different course offerings on the left window next to the map. Select the training organization that you would like to attend.
STEP 4: Click Register now which will then take you to their home page for payment.
STEP 5: Complete payment and book your reservation for training.
STEP 6: On the day of the training, the trainer will provide all other details on how to register in ScrumAlliance for the exam etc.

Hi Nik - I am aware of the concepts, do I still need to go through a course or can I just give the exam directly? The courses are very costly and charged upto $1200 for a 2 day course.

Lot of things have changed with COVID. I would say find a provider that offers exam at the end of training. Just getting trained is not value add unless you are certified at the end of the training. Most of them are designed to have exam at the end of the training.
The in-Person training is not available in my country (Nigeria). Is there a virtual training or an in-person training in nearby countries in West Africa

Scrum is primarily used for executing projects. Since you are in operations, you can look in to Kanban related certification. The Kanban Method “helps you gradually improve the delivery of your products and services. It does so by helping you eliminate bottlenecks in your system, improve flow and reduce cycle time. It helps you deliver more continuously and get faster feedback to make any changes that may be needed by your customer”. Both Scrum and Kanban are agile methodologies, however Kanban execution is more apt for operations. Also look in to ITIL as it’s service oriented and not project oriented
Is it mandatory to attend the in-person training from the CST? Can I do a self study & take the exam directly?
Mayur Kotwani I am not aware of an option to take the test without in person training. Atleast that was the case when I did it 3 years ago. Let’s see if anyone who took recently have any new info to share

Any certification will always add cherry on top of the icecream but the experience executing agile projects will likely determine the success of the interview. So to answer your question, for job search I would say the hiring manager would rank your experience first and then the certifications. But the automated systems that's scanning the resumes will pick up on certifications so it will be easy to get interviews with certification and then the experience will help you succeed those interview.

CSM is widely accepted, SMC is not that known widely at this time. I would go with the CSM if you are planning to use the certification/credentials during job search.

Hi Niks, I have around 5 years of exp as Business Development Executive IT products and Services. So, Can I go for CSM certification? Can I change my domain from BDE to SM? Is it possible?
Taking the certification and passing the exam is possible with your background, however finding a job opening for Scrum Master may be difficult without the experience, but not impossible. And CSM certification on the resume may help during the job application at the very least.

Sure, education & certification will never be a waste. Also in agile the idea is that the team is self sufficient, so sometimes in the absence of Scrum Master someone else in the team may have to take up that role so if you understand Agile & Scrum and have certification it will only help

Are the exams proctored? I'm asking this because will the exam begin right after I click on the button "Take Test"?
There is a 15 minute initial window to get accustomed to the button what to click and how to skip the question etc .typically it wont take more than 10 minutes to get an idea and be comfortable with the questions software. So after that initial 15 minutes the exam starts and the clock is then on

Each one follows different methodologies primarily (however PMI's CAPM is changing to adapt to Agile methodologies nowadays). CSM is Certified SCRUM Master and is intended for managing Agile Projects and CAPM is Certified Associate in Project Management which lean towards the traditional waterfall methodology. In Project Management both Agile and Waterfall methodologies are followed and knowledge is good to have, so you would find that majority of the Project Managers would have both PMP/CAPM and CSM. I would say CSM is very easy to get and don't have much pre-work to get it done in few weeks. So the short answer is both certification are equally valued, it depends on which project methodology (Agile vs Waterfall) the organization follows and one might have more preference over the other.

Fresh out of college you might find it difficult to start as a Scrum Master unless you find internship in some organization where they are looking for junior project manager or someone to assist the PM. Certification will help to be part of any Agile team not necessarily just for Scrum Master.

Both PMP and CSM will serve you better in the long run. With your credentials and experience you are qualified to apply for both exams. I would say CSM is easy to obtain with very little effort, so get that done first which will help boost confidence then to prepare for PMP exam and pass that as well.

Hi Niks, you have mentioned fees as 900-1200 USD for CSM but when I searched on website by selecting country as India then I can see fees as 21000-25000 INR... however, if I select country as USA then it is showing 500-600 USD...please advise..
When I took close to 4 years ago it was between 900 to 1200 usd depending on how early the calendar is blocked. It may have come down since due to the current situation. What you see currently on the websites would be the price you pay to book the training and exam.

Is there a big difference between CSM and CAPM certification?.
Yes they are both project management certifications and that’s the only common theme. The governing bodies are different PMI vs Scrum organization, the project management methodology that you will be tested is different waterfall vs agile. So basically if you want to be an agile scrum master then you would take CSM certification and CAPM is for traditional warerfall project management

Hi Prasad, CSM is optional if you can demonstrate you have knowledge and experience as Scrum Master, in other words the PMP certification is more powerful so you should be good , if you get Scrum Master interview in IT you can always say that you are planning to complete the CSM certification in next 3 to 6 months. Just having CSM certification wouldn’t increase the chance of getting a job , I would say your experience and current credentials will help you get the job and you can always get the certification later once you get the job

Since you are in the software development area I would say you might be better with CSD than CSM, however if you are planning to transition to Project Manager role and is planning to manager a scrum team then go for CSM

Typically SCRUM is widely used for IT projects especially good for software development projects. That being said, agile in general is used across all fields of project management such as Healthcare, manufacturing, construction and more.. so you can get agile certified to learn more about Kanban, Lean Management etc

When I took it in 2016, it was $1000 for 2 day training and exam was included. No financial options as far as I know except pay thru credit card

There is no prerequisite for the exam so you are eligible to write the exam. The cost vary country by country you will have to schedule it through Scrumalliance.org and you will see the course fees + exam fees when you schedule the exam.

I graduated with a Biology degree and was wondering if I get CSM certification, could I get a job?
It's hard to make a general statement without knowing your detailed background. If you are a fresh graduate then just by completing the certificate wouldn't get you directly in to a Scrum Master role, becz most of the organization look for experience over certification. That being said you can definitely look for project coordinator roles or junior PM roles and then during the interview you can mention that you will complete the certification within certain months (as getting a CSM certificate is not that tough at all).

Where is the best place to sign up for CSM certification? Coursera? or?
I took my class pre-Covid so it was in person training, now I am assuming there would be virtual classes. You can go to scrumalliance.org and click on Find a course button and select the CSM exam and live online option etc

Should the exam be taken immediately after the training?
At least it was how that was designed pre covid during the in person training, the last day of the training afternoon the exam is conducted and it’s an open book exam, so all will pass :-)

The certification is related to Project Management, and Projects are managed across industries including Marketing. So if you are managing a team or part of a team working on a project then the certification will add to your credentials. It is really easy to pass, no preparations needed other than the weekend course that I mentioned in the video

Hi Bipin, it depends on the experience you had as procurement specialist. If you had managed a project execution then that will help during the project management/ scrum master interview. Scrum Master/PM has additional responsibilities during the project lifecycle phase which is not covered in CSM exam / study materials. For the first question, for fresh graduates more than certification the companies will be looking for analytical and problem solving skills. So I wouldn’t think that this is the right time for you to spend the money to get CSM certification may be after a year of experience it will be ideal. For personal question TH-cam, Udemy etc. are great resources for free education

I was in the education industry till 2017 then after my baby I could not go outside to work. In 2020 I started reading about IT sales. Now I want to get certified for CSM. I am totally new to this. Is it possible to crack the exam after 2 days of training or should I first read about it before getting registered?

Hi Priyanka, You should be fine to pass with flying colors with 2 days of training. Don’t have to read or prep anything prior, join the 2 day training and you should be good. I would say the certification definitely helps when you are out in the job market and help filter your profile above the competition who doesn’t have the certification. Also additional language skills is definitely a plus, depending on what the companies are looking for

Hi Nick, I have 8 years of program and project management experience and I have PMP certification, six sigma Green Belt and now I am working on getting my CSM yet it is still hard to find a job within the field, because my experience was in the Middle East and don’t have project management experience in the US. What is your advice to me? Project management is my passion I have Biology degree and currently I am working as a medical technologist but still can’t find my self.
Hi Enas, I understand. It might be just the market condition that we are in currently, hopefully once the lockdown situation is over and jobs open up you may find it easy to get in. Also try pharma PM jobs since your education background aligns to that.

With 0 experience it will be difficult to get a PM role, however lot of companies are hiring project coordinator/ project administrative jobs and that way you can get in to the role and learn from the experienced PMs and eventually take up more responsibility

Aalap Patel anything is possible. It would be easy to take the certification and then transition to new role within your project/ organization then with that experience you can look outside job market

when you apply for Scrum Master jobs, the CSM certification will add value, however, note that in the interview they are looking for people who had Scrum / Agile execution experience.
