Love the 2012 MacBook Pros. They were the very last MacBooks with an optical drive and upgradable components. Not to mention, you don’t need stupid dongles to connect other devices.
Just done this. I got a Macbook 2012 13 inch in excellent condition for $135. Had 6 spare free Evo 500GB drives and some free 8GB recycled ram sticks in my collection at home. Love it.
Highly recommended removing the Super drive, buying a sata chassis and a 2nd matching ssd. Format the drives to work in a striped set in Disk Utility from the USB. Increases read speeds even more.
I really want to max out the speed of my 15.4 2012 unibody. If I already have done the 16gb RAM upgrade and swapped the primary drive to SSD, how much speed and/or lower will be added. I have the strongest CPU & GPU from 2012 already installed). Also, will replacing the battery to something brand new (and high quality) help? I like my machine and would like to continue using it as long as possible. When I take it in public, people “in the know” are impressed I’m using a 10 yo laptop with current OS, apps, and okay speed.
I bought this on Craigslist for $120. I then swapped the HD for a 1TB SSD, upgraded the RAM to 16GB & installed a new battery (the one inside had almost 1,000 cycles). I downloaded Ventura to it via OCLP & it is fast!! It's not as fast as my M1 Air, but it does what I need it to do
This was very helpful. I only had trouble installing the OS to the flash drive; tried 3x b/c the OS wasn’t updated in my laptop but finally got it after 3 tries. The laptop was so slow that I had to leave it running overnight to install. After it was successful I bought the 16GB memory & 500GB HD from OWC. I followed your instructions and finished installing last night. Installing the memory on the top slot was a little challenge b/c the bottom one would pop up. So I inserted both and pressed down. I was concerned that it wouldn’t recognize the 16GB memory but it did. After viewing so many how-to vids in YT your vid was the most concise and easy to follow in 5 mins. I got my 10 y/o MBP to run a lot better now. Thank you so much!
I am going to upgrade my RAM, If I follow the instructions the same as you did, will all my files and folders I have on my laptop currently, will they still be on my MacBook after upgrading the RAM???
@@michaelrobles6420 I first backed up my files using Time Machine onto a portable drive before I did this upgrade. I did a clean install, not carbon copy. So I would make sure all your files and folders are backed up first on another drive before doing this upgrade and doing a fresh install like I did. If using a portable drive for backup you can format the drive from MacBook so it’s easy to retrieve later.

Exactly what I did now in 2023. I'm sure a top of the line, hyper expensive new Mac is even faster but man, this 2012 is now WAY above my needs. I'm about to do the same with a mid-2011 desktop iMac just for the kicks.
You don't address the correct format for the SSD. In the video, you use MacOS Extended (Journaled), but Apple recommends APFS for MacOS versions higher than Sierra, and requires it for versions higher than High Sierra.
@@zu1502 It matters. That's why you should have mentioned it in your video. There's ways to work around it. Anyone posting a video suggesting a new SSD should cover format, plus how to manage it.
@@zu1502 APFS is a must for Mac OS versions of High Sierra (10.13) and above for sure. Older Macs may be on older OS versions. Upgradable Macs often struggle to run MacOS 10.14 (Mojave) and can't run 10.15 (Monterrey) at all. So SSD format is an option that needs to be considered. I upgraded the HD to an SSD in my 2012 MacBookPro running MacOS 10.12 (Sierra), and no issues at all using the MacOS Extended (Journaled) formatting.
I finished my upgrade this afternoon. Thanks for the clear instructions. It helped immensely, and when it finally booted up, WOW i was impressed with the results. I swapped out to a 1TB SSD, and 16gb RAM, well worth the $200 for that and a battery.

@@vishnunair9933 Yes - massively - from pressing the power button to the login screen is less than 20 seconds now. I'm not running a lot of applications at once, but they open almost instantly. A huge improvement. The video was easy to follow - I paused and replayed back and forth a bit - but it worked 100%. Better than I expected actually.

@@vides4u Not really, MacBook Pro mid 2012 officially supports Catalina, and Catalina is a requirement for xcode 12. Now its just a question if the pc is strong enough to run it haha

Hi, no I did not have to add a bracket. Also, if Apple says that your hard drive is failing, then yes this upgrade to an SSD should to the trick and make the macbook faster!

I have the same model and I was having issues that mimicked hard drive failure but I did a lot of research on it and I discovered that these MacBooks are notorious for having the SATA cable go bad and a bad SATA cable can give the appearance of a bad hard drive. I bought a new SATA cable for like $20 and installed it myself referencing a TH-cam video and it solved my issue. No more spinning beach ball lockup’s, etc.

Yes, 8gb ram is still better than 4 because then you'll be able to run more applications. They will also run faster!

I've seen plenty of videos claiming that Catalina cannot be installed in SSD. How true/false is that?
It depends on what Macbook you have. Currently I am running Catalina on my mid 2012. I would suggest checking apple's page for supported devices!

Not really, this only uses the cpu graphics
