My mid 2012 Macbook Pro was found in a dumpster wrapped up and marked "Dead". My neighbor gave it to me. It would not boot....bad Hard drive. checked the serial number to see if it was a stolen unit. I then replaced the battery, RAM and put in an SSD. Installed High Sierra OSx. For $125.00 I have a VERY fast and reliable, nearly brand new looking Macbook Pro. This is a great upgrade. Yeah so I have to point out that the RAM you put in your MacBook will actually make it run SLOWER. You’re supposed to use 1600mhz RAM in that MacBook and the 1066mhz you put in has effectively slowed your computer down. The bulk of performance increase is coming from the SSD.
If you notice, I linked 1600mhz ones in the description. It was what was available locally and just went with it. Thanks for pointing it out though, someone else might not know the distinction!
I upgraded my MBPro 2012 also with an SSD & added 16GB of memory. I also bought my SSD from MicroCenter near my house. It's a great machine as a backup
That micro center ssd is pretty slow compared to other ssd’s, and I had one fail on me within 2 weeks. I love micro center, but this drive wasn’t one of their better products. The crucial and Samsung drives are only a few dollars more now, it’s worth the extra. The inland drive will still be faster than a spinning drive, but I’d recommend just spending the extra.

If I have everything on a separate hard drive to I need to "clone" or can I just go to the opening process and replacing the new devices? Thank you in advance!
Why is your desktop screen resolution 1600x900 in the beginning of the video, and now that you have finish the upgrade, your screen resolution has change to 2560 x 1600, what is up with that? This is not the same laptop unless you change the video card too, but I don't think so, because you would of mention it. Putting more ram and using an SSD will make a big difference on any pc or mac, I don't get why you used a different laptop to show the final result.
Just came across your video and it's very informative. Thanks a bunch. What is the purpose of the carbon copy cloner? And is it necessary to switch out the hard drive? Will just inserting the 16GB of ram improve the speed? Thanks
I'm afraid I fell at the first jump! Let me explain: it's about cloning. I read somewhere else on utube that I could use my newly purchased SSD 1TB hard drive to clone my original hard drive by connecting an SATA cable from MacBook Pro (containing original hard drive) to my new SSD. Is this correct? If so, why would I want to purchase a separate 'external enclosure' as you call it on the video? Am I missing something here?
Video very helpful, but I missed a step. You used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a copy of everything on your existing hard drive. Then when you were showing the SSD drive just before installing it you said it was already loaded. How did the clone actually get copied onto the SSD drive? Does the SSD have a USB port for external attachment to the Macbook during the clone? That part wasn’t obvious to me.
I may have found the answer to my own question. Is CCC used to clone the SSD from the hard drive outside the Macbook via a SATA to USB connector? If that's correct, that would be a great edit for your video. Thanks again!

Can you do a more in depth guide for the carbon copy cloned installation and usage? I need to do this or buy a new laptop. My MacBook is DINOSAUR slow.
You need a new SSD and a USB adapter to connect your new SSD to your computer, the rest is easy: 1.connect a new SSD to your computer with a USB dapter ( link below). 2. Clone your old HDD by selecting your old HDD as source and new SSD as destination, when done go to step 3. 3. Unscrew you laptop and replace your old HDD with a new SSD. Close your laptop 4. Turn on your laptop and enjoy. you don’t need to buy a new computer unless you want to. here’s an example of USB adapter you will need: www.amazon.ca/dp/B011M8YACM/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_api_i_oUBeGbAAK2WPD
@@FATBOYCALLUMZ You can connect your old HDD via USB it will works fine. you can even boot your computer from your old HDD via USB( but it will be a slower than SSD).
Will installing just the SSD upgrade the performance? I don't think I need extra memory space. If I skip the memory kit, do I still need to use the carbon copy cloner? Thanks for your help with this.
One thing I don't get: Can I clone my hard drive using the Professional SSD 550MB that is used in the video and if so, how do I connect hard drive to MacBook Pro(2012)? What connector would I need if this is possible? Obviously, I'm a newbie to this, but please try to help if you can.......someone must know?
This is what the hard drive enclosure he mentioned is for. It turns your new ssd into an external drive temporarily, you clone to the external drive, then take stuff apart and replace the old drive with the new one.
I spoke to a computer repair place about upgrading mine to an SSD and he said "don't do it, your video card will fail" any truth to this?? my MacBook is running SO SLOW, and has trouble booting up recently
I don't understand much of computers so excuse my question; but will this affect / delete stuff I have on my camputer? Like downloaded application, files etc. Thanks!
upgrading the RAM no, but upgrading the hard drive/SSD yes because the new drive will be new, there will be nothing on it, not even the operating system (Mac OSX) so you have to backup everything and transfer to new drive.
Spongebob MacBook hero 😍 I will try this. My google chrome or application pull up takes at least 7-10 seconds at this rate. Which is nuts. It’s from 2012 too. So thanks I’ll try this. One question, any advice for fixing the CD player on it?
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with16gb ram and added the 480gb ssd ., was hoping by doing this would speed up Adobe after effects ...I am doing a 360° view of an image and i need to use the Roto brush tool to edit the video but it still runs very slow even after upgrading memory and ssd :(
Why is there an external hard drive link and what do you use this for? Does it help with the speed too? Or is not necessary to increase the speed with the process you’ve shown?
You use the external HDD enclosure to turn your new drive into an external drive temporarily. You clone the existing drive onto the new drive, then remove the old drive and replace it with the new one.
Hi. I have a question. What happens if you don't clone your hard drive into the new SSD. OK I guess I'll lose all my data. But other than that are there any other side effects? Will my OS still boot normally?
You don’t have to clone anything most people won’t know how to do that yes your video helps them however the less technical super simple way to do this particular process which I’ve done many times over I can’t even count, would be before anything else do a time machine backup with the correct updated operating system OS, after doing that turn it off of course take the panel off on the back with the screws make sure you don’t mix up the screws because there are various sizes for the back panel of the MacBook Pro, at that point you takeoff the screws in the back panel make sure to disconnect the battery cable on the back after the covers off little black slip kind of a square thing I’m sure the video will help that if he shows it I’m coming anyway take out the hard drive take out the ram do whatever you need to upgrade it pretty simple put the case back on power it back on doing Internet recovery that’s command option or is the letter R format the drive that’s installed through the disk utility once doing that you can re-download the operating system or restore from my time machine back up as you should’ve already had it will put the OS on it :-) bada bing bada boom Finito

Can you do a more in depth guide for the carbon copy cloned installation and usage? I need to do this or buy a new laptop. My MacBook is DINOSAUR slow.
You need a new SSD and a USB adapter to connect your new SSD to your computer, the rest is easy:
1.connect a new SSD to your computer with a USB dapter ( link below).
2. Clone your old HDD by selecting your old HDD as source and new SSD as destination, when done go to step 3.
3. Unscrew you laptop and replace your old HDD with a new SSD. Close your laptop
4. Turn on your laptop and enjoy.
you don’t need to buy a new computer unless you want to. here’s an example of USB adapter you will need:

@@nolanmckain2061 can you not just plug an external hard drive with a copy of your hdd on ? or would that not work,
@@FATBOYCALLUMZ You can connect your old HDD via USB it will works fine. you can even boot your computer from your old HDD via USB( but it will be a slower than SSD).
Would it be possible to upgrade the MacBook Pro mid 2012 with the 2020 Magic Keyboard?
I spoke to a computer repair place about upgrading mine to an SSD and he said "don't do it, your video card will fail"
any truth to this?? my MacBook is running SO SLOW, and has trouble booting up recently
I would replace it, it works
@@tubemikis I did the SSD and upgraded the ram. Works great!
I think it would run better than new right? SSD I don’t think was an option back then. Good vid :)
Hello, the ssd thing is not available on amazon right now, I don't know which is a good other one to buy? Not really sure what I'm looking at 🤭😰 help!
Cant go wrong with Samsung SSD. You can get them from NewEgg, Amazon, Best Buy, a 500gb 860 EVO SSD is going for about $80 right now.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with16gb ram and added the 480gb ssd ., was hoping by doing this would speed up Adobe after effects ...I am doing a 360° view of an image and i need to use the Roto brush tool to edit the video but it still runs very slow even after upgrading memory and ssd :(
Clean the fan
Does it have to be a solid state hard drive?
You can actually put 16gb in the 13 inch line. Apple doesn’t advertise it, but I did it to my 13 inch 2012 and it works great.
same
Did you also upgrade the had?
the external hd is just in case you loose your stuff or we have to install everything again??
Why is there an external hard drive link and what do you use this for? Does it help with the speed too? Or is not necessary to increase the speed with the process you’ve shown?
You use the external HDD enclosure to turn your new drive into an external drive temporarily. You clone the existing drive onto the new drive, then remove the old drive and replace it with the new one.
Hi. I have a question. What happens if you don't clone your hard drive into the new SSD. OK I guess I'll lose all my data. But other than that are there any other side effects? Will my OS still boot normally?
No like q brand new
Can't wait to do this. Really hoping to see the improvement when running Final Cut Pro
Have you done this? I'm looking to upgrade mine to run FCPX
@@ryanvegso9716 not yet.. within the next month or so I will
Ok question. What did you do at the beginning? You mentioned “cloning” a couple times. What is that? Why do you need to do that?
i think it was meant to be for cloning the hard drive to ssd/ another hardrive, so you dont have to install macos again
You’re copying all the files on your computer currently and putting them on your new drive
@Talkin'Tech should we clean up old hard Drive before cloning? i have clean my mac...would this be sufficient?
You briefly mentioned your $7 macbook... but not how you found one for seven bucks!!

Annoying that it's hard to setup RAID1 when you put 2 x SSD in since Apple pulled support in the OS.
I didn't even think of that, honestly. Assuming you swapped out the CD drive?
The best is to take out the CD drive to save weight
If I have 2 separate user accounts do I have to upload both to the ssd
Do I need to clone if I don’t need to save anything on my Mac?
no if you don't have anything important on it.
