    Somewhere along the way, Dillon got fixated on the idea that this $100 bar cart was meant for a young person/college student... which if that was a stipulation, then sure, his cart would probably win. But I don't think it was and broke young college students aren't the only people who might be trying to stock up on a budget (what college student even has a bar cart?). Dutch actually captured the idea of what a bar cart is supposed be for, which is having all the things needed to make an assortment of cocktails.

    Fun one guys. I think Dutch was on the right track here for this one. But I think I would argue you should pare this down to just one or at most two cocktails (maybe a sweet one and a dry one). Have an editorial viewpoint. Make a drink you really like, with the best ingredients you can afford, and make it well. If you need a ten drink menu, go out to a bar or restaurant for the evening. Getting the best ingredients for that one or two, should also give you one or two base spirits that are very sippable. And you'll have a "house" drink that will entertain your friends. Become the Manhattan Guy or Martini Girl for your circle. For one evening your friends can venture off their beaten path and try your best effort, instead. It might be a bit more fun and broaden their horizons.

    Dutch due to the tequila and of rye. Old forester rye is a must for any value cart. My cart: vodka (who cares) star blue $9, OF Rye $22, Fee brother bitters $7, Bacardi Silver rum $11, Grand Centenetario Blanco Tequila $22, Triple Sec $6, Tanqueray Gin $22

    Dutch was pretty fire but if you’re in college I think you’re going with Dillon. I don’t know how many college kids are as knowledgeable about cocktails as Dutch presented for. In my 30’s tho I’m going with Dutch. Impressive.

  • @robertmyers5763

    Dutch, you're missing vodka. I mainly drink tequila and some vodka in cocktails, so I have no input on gin, bourbon, rum, etc. I'll have to try Tito's after I finish a bottle of Grey Goose. My tequila pick for this competition is Olmeca Altos ($18/750ml in my area)...way more sippable than Espolon, less expensive than Arette, and an excellent mixer!

    Dutch’s cart is the best. What college student is going to buy so many hard alcohol bottles.

  • @MrRossman2
    @MrRossman2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    $20 for ODG? I think Jules is thinking of OGD Bottled In Bond, which is what you should be buying. Base OGD is pretty awful but it's pretty obvious that Dillon went right up to the $100 cutoff.
    Tough to decide between these guys. Man I want to choose Jules' cart just because of the Knob Creek Rye, but that's probably a bad judgement call. Dutch's cart is most complete if you're looking at cocktails, but I wouldn't want to sip on most of that stuff (that Gallo vermouth is cheap for a reason). Dillon's is probably the best overall sipper but I gotta dock points for the base OGD.
    If I'm taking it from a college student's perspective (which I have not been for many, many years), I guess I have to go with Dutch's bar cart. You're going to get more women drinking from your bar if you can make more cocktails and shooters (college equivalent to "sipping").

    Dutch for the win! This is totally my mom's "bar cart" approach, but it gets the job done. My Negronis alone would eat up most of the $100 with Bombay, Campari, and Antica Carpano...whatever is left goes towards a bottle of whiskey and some bitters. Have you guys read 12 Bottle Bar?

    Great video! I like all of the choices for various reasons. On entertaining, I probably would not be making Negroni's for our friends. I do not think they would even know what it was. I would think having Martinis, Old Fashions, Margarita's, Screwdrivers, Manhattans, Decent wines, and a few good sippers with Bourbon or Scotch. So, I guess I have to go with Dillon on this one to cover these areas pretty well.

    I'd say Dutch's simply for the fact if I'm thinking bar cart I'm thinking of cocktails and his was by far the best overall cocktail making set. If I wanted just a good budget version of the main styles of alcohol Id go with Dillons simply because he has Titos and he had the added versatility of a scotch.

  • @Walking_Ears
    @Walking_Ears 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wow Doorly's is a great choice for rum in this challenge. I'm a bit surprised none of you picked Woodford for bourbon given how you often talk about it as a good representative of bourbon. Maybe that's too expensive if you want to have lots of other bottles I guess, but I think I'd try to make room for it in my own cart.
    Dutch's cart is best for cocktail-lovers, but someone who prefers drinking spirits neat probably wouldn't want to buy so many bottles just for cocktails. I might buy Dutch's Old Fashioned ingredients and make the rest of my cart a showcase for spirits, leaving out the other cocktail-focused things Dutch had.
    Commenting on Dillon's vodka choice, it might be interesting to see at least one or two sippable vodkas entered into the spirits competition.

    So Dutch didn't even have a VODKA on his bar. So no Bloody Mary's, Screwdriver or even a Vodka Martini. I do, however, like how Dutch thought through the process but other than the Campari, the vermouth and the bitters I would "consider" as mixers and not include in the 100 dollar price. I think that Dillon's list is great but living in WV, his list is in the realm of "Unobtanium" as the Doorly's and the RUBY Cask Famous Grouse are not available without going out of state or ordering online and paying the associated shipping costs. (Dutch has the Arette Tequila that is not available locally.) Jules, what can I say, "he grabbed the wrong bottle" and has 2 gins in his list. So for the record, there are ISSUES with each of the entries. BUT my vote is for Jules, as the products he picked are readily available. Now out of the bottles that were picked by all 3, I would do the Tito's Vodka, the Knob Creek Rye, Bacardi Gold, Espolon Tequila and the Bombay Gin. (with the smallest of bottles of Campari as a BONUS above the 100) for my list. It would be over the 100 dollar limit in WV but being creative and purchasing in other states while traveling, it could be obtained for less than the 100. (actually 99.95 American Dollars plus tax.)

    If you're in Texas, get Tower Vodka instead of Tito's. It's just as good or better tasting at a lower price. Tower is made from Texas corn and is actually distilled in Texas. Tito's is first distilled in Nebraska by MGP (Midwest Grain Products) using massive industrial column stills. It is then shipped to Austin where it's distilled again in pot stills to give it the "hand made" marketing BS. If you don't believe me, look at Tito's distillery. They don't even have any grain silos on site so they can't possibly distill their vodka there. The vodka does taste good, but it's not handmade in Texas in small batches like their marketing suggests.

    Fresh limes, lemons, oranges and simple syrup are the magical ingredients for most bar carts - at any budget. Stock good quality base spirits: Flor de Cana 4 Extra Seco light rum $14, Tapatio Blanco tequila $35 1L (so $26 750ml equivalent), Wild Turkey bourbon $17, Beefeater gin $15. Total to this point $81. Stock these if you want to spend $100 or $200+ on a bar cart - quality first.
    For the last $19 you have to chose which cocktails you want to make - a, b, c (or d):
    a. More rum cocktails (my preference), add $18 Appleton Signature Jamaican rum. Warning - rum is a rabbit hole. Stay away from Tiki unless you want to go well over a $100 cart.
    b. Vodka cocktails: chose the cheapest among Ketel One, Russian Standard, Tito's, Smirnoff 21. What you mix with vodka is more important than vodka choice when you start with a solid vodka. If you come in under $19 here (and you can) throw in Angostura Bitters.
    c. Vermouth cocktails: Chose 375ml (vermouth will spoil) Dolin Dry $11 and Rogue $11 (sweet). Spend the $22 and make an excuse when you go over budget $3.
    d. Avoid Scotch, Irish Whiskey and Brandy/Cognac at a $100 budget - these are used less frequently in cocktails. Ignore this advise if your favorite cocktail is a Penicillin and grab Monkey Shoulder or Famous Grouse.
    You can make a lot of cocktails with $100 in base spirits. Once you go want to go above $100 finish up with options a, b, and c plus expand your cocktail options with an Orange liqueur (Cointreau $30 or Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao $30), a Rye (Rittenhouse $20), Angostura Bitters $9 and Orange Bitters (Fee Bros $8 or Regans $9). If the cocktail bug takes over, you will discover cocktail specs that will compel you to spend on more bottles.
    P.S. Why splurge on Tapatio tequila vs other spirits? Make a Tommy's Margarita (google recipe) with Tapatio tequila and another sub-$25 750ml tequila and taste the difference. If it's not worth it for you, Arrete Classic, Cimarron, Pueblo Viejo, Olemca Altos, Espolon, or your favorite tequila at Costco are good options.

    • @robertmyers5763
      @robertmyers5763 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your tequila comments are spot on, and I totally overlooked Tapatio blanco for this competition. At 1L, Tapatio blanco is a bargain. In my collection, Tapatio is a high-end sipper, and while Olmeca Altos is primarily my mixer, it's still a decent sipper.

    • @als.2983
      @als.2983 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertmyers5763 Tapatio is a Mexican treasure: horno ovens, 20% Tahona crushed and 80% roller mill, copper pot. A Carlos Camarena gem. Good quality. Good value. Your use of Olemca Altos as a mixer is a good call - sometimes you will see 750ml for $15 in my area and you just have to stock up.

    Dutch wins because besides all the cocktails he mentioned... he could also do a Boulevardier {whisky/sweet vermouth/campari}, Dry Martini from his dry vermouth, Americano {Campari, sweet vermouth}... of course theres the rum old fashioned in which his bitters get more usage... and last but not least, his lineup actually reads the recipe for the Rosita {Campari, Tequila, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, ango bitters}
    Sure there may be better quality base spirits in the other carts.... But this hundred dollars makes a far larger menu

    I pick Dillon's. For rum, I would go with Flor de Cana Extra Seco though. $18 for 750ml or $26 for 1.75l

    Lot's of great choices all around but I'm with Dutch on this one. You just need some Cointreau on that cart.
    In general, my only disagreement is with Espalone. It's not bad at all but it tastes too much like vodka. Arette is a great choice but as you say, hard to get sometimes. I like Tres Agaves. It's not particularly complex but all the flavors are good. it's smooth and round with lots of agave, vanilla, black pepper & citrus and no funky after tastes. A great mixer and sips well. Highly under-rated in my opinion.
    I have some expensive sippers but these are my current bargain brands primarily for mixing. (I didn't add it up but I'm not bound by the rules :-)
    Bourbon: Old Grandad
    Scotch: Monkey Shoulder
    Vodka: Absolut
    Gin: Beefeater
    Tequila: Tres Agaves Blanco
    Rum: Plantation 3 Stars

    Dillon and Jules did great. Sorry Dutch but those two did closer to my liking. Great episode!

    Dutch wins. Dillon is automatically disqualified for spending part of his budget on vodka.

    The real vodka pick is costco vodka, actually amazing.

    Was he joking? And what happened to Ben?
