  • Rob hosts a radio show in Greenville, SC called "Hot Rods & Happy Hour" but he has worked in the car business all his life. When he got out of high school, he started selling cars on eBay for local dealers but eventually eBay took offense to some of his selling practices.

So to summarize 10mins of video:
    -Knowingly sold lemons on EBay
-Got dinged by negative feedback from sale of lemons
-Created fake accounts to artificially inflate his own feedback rating
-Scammed buyers by making fake bids with fake accounts
    -Got banned for life
This guy is literally the reason why people are skeptical of buying off EBay

Sellers like Rob were so common in the day. Part of my practice in bidding was to look at a sellers history. If I saw the $.99 items in abundance pumping up the score I wouldn't bid. Ebay is more expensive today than it was in the early 2000's but it's also much better without sellers like this.

This guy is a great salesman but this is why I'm not in car wholesaling anymore. Car dealers see nothing wrong with almost every immoral, unethical, or illegal tactic as long as they're making money. I literally sat at the auction one sale day and listened to two car dealers talk about how much profit they've made ripping off their own mothers on car deals.

I'm no fan of salesmen of any kind - most don't have a clue about what they're selling which I consider a pretty fundamental requirement. But I have to say, buyers are often no better in terms of morality or honesty. There's apparently a saying in the car sales world - "Buyers are liars".

Yep, proxy bidding on eBay or in a live auction is CORRUPT but, unfortunately like here, it happens all the time. I sold an Acura TL on eBay back in 2006 myself. In fact, I used to sell a LOT of stuff on eBay but like many here I quit after one buyer tried to screw me back in 2015 (I think) and eBay did everything they could to make it MY problem. I got PROOF from the delivery company that the item had been delivered and SIGNED for by someone at the address. The buyer claimed it was "stolen off his porch". eBay backed him but paypal verified the delivery and backed me. Never did business with eBay again after that

So, he was confessing to fraud, and a few other criminal practices on a video, and was smiling and bragging about the whole thing? I heard several confessions that could easily get him jail time if not for Statutes of Limitations. He is not some kind of net hero, he is a criminal. Nothing romantic about it, he is just another thief and con-man.

Granted what I did when I was 20 years old was a shady unethical business practice. I have moved on to much larger rewarding ventures like hosting automotive events while raising over 100k dollars for charities and organizations last year alone (at no cost to them) and I'm also the host of an automotive talk radio show that is heard by hundreds of thousands around the world weekly . This is a story for entertainment purposes .

He is the wrong, but it's also true there are some realities of business that a strict and outdated 'feedback' system doesn't really do to protect those just trying to sell cars.
"I bought this used for $8,000 less than I would have at a certified pre-owned dealership, runs great, but I don't like the fact one of the brake lights was out when I drove it away...1 Star, will never do business again"
Kinda silly when you think about it. Doesn't justify necessarily what he did, but when you don't have a bunch of employees, and no brick and mortar location, and you're trying to make a living off a platform that does nothing to protect or promote you...sometimes you might have to fudge a few things to make a profit.

This is 100% true, dude is in the wrong, but how many people have you met in life that are total entitled assholes soon as money is involved? The customer isn't ALWAYS right. If ebay would review and protect sellers every once in a while they wouldn't be encouraging bad sellers to work the system.

    • @sashalofstrom6659
      @sashalofstrom6659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

nonya biz there's buyer feedback just the same as seller feedback, isn't there? To identify problem customers? And there's a difference between a customer occasionally acting "entitled" which sounds like an attitude problem and a seller consistently committing systematic wire fraud.

Yep, I love a lot of the deals I've gotten on eBay, but most I know are afraid to use the platform still to this day because of how much fraud and scams have deflated the name of it. My father-in-law, for example, finds items he likes, makes a list, and then has me place the order for him, which is smart, that way I can check it out and make sure its legit, and I also know the rules a bit better. I mean really, eBay is now very muchso catered in the buyer's favor so I don't think the fear is really necessary, but there's always someone pulling off some scam on these platforms (even Amazon has been getting hit with tons of scam sellers lately).

The only trick about what he was doing is not understanding that shill bidding is illegal and you can be prosecuted for it. He's a typical used car salesman, smarter than everyone and made more money than everyone also. Heard this same speech a million times. Props to Initfortheparking. I didn't see his comment till I had posted mine, but he called it first. He knew what he was talking about.

First off I was an eBay Vender for about a year and I even made a profit. What I will say eBay is great when it comes to protecting the consumer, props to them for that. When it comes to horror stories on eBay I WAY MORE as a vender than I do as a buyer. You jump through a ton of hoops only to at the end have you’re piece of the pie chopped dramatically (eBay fees and the IRS). What makes matters worse is dealing with a buyer who leaves negative feedback over something that they were unclear on (yo u’d be shocked how many get stuck at the prices/auction and never read the listing) just turn around to give you negative feedback. Which funny enough you can still make the attempt to remedy a buyers grievance send them away 100 percent satisfied and their is no guarantee they will fix their negative feedback. And don’t let me get started on neutral feedback which is just as bad as negative feedback in my book. This dude is not right at all but I understand the why. Life is a bitch when the dude selling a bunch of Chinese phone accessories has an easier go at it than the guy selling his own products on a smaller scale.

The Allstate was a Henry J built for Sears stores to be sold. The Henry J itself was a car built by Kaiser Frazier for their dealers.
Ironic thing about the Allstate, Sears upgraded the interiors and offered more options at a far lower price than KF could sell their Henry J on their own lot

I remember buying a phone off ebay. In the last few seconds, the seller (I suspect) jumped in with an alt account, ran the price up, and won the bid. But then he didn't pay, so I got an email informing me that the highest bidder didn't pay and asked if I wanted to buy for my most recent bid. The trouble here is my most recent bid was quite a bit higher than what I would have payed had not the price been run up. I ended up buying the phone for the higher price, but I feel cheated, so I haven't bought anything from ebay since.

Guys like this are a real jobs creator. Working on the customer operations side of a site similar to ebay, I spent half my time being a 'cop' on the site because of stuff like this. It was more fun than some of the other stuff I could have been doing so it was hard to get mad about it. But also, glad I'm not one of the people they ripped off. Those guys got screwed.
