She is a stunning mini. I think it’s a good idea for you to have showcased how good the forgeworld resin is these days, I have a couple blood bowl star players and honestly they are flawless such crisp clean detail and with all the resin old world minis coming in the same resin it would be a shame for people to be put off by the few people that are scare mongering just because of finecast which frankly might as well be a million years in the past such is the change in quality and production value.
The resin, the camera, the paint job, that's far too much awesome in one video, you keep this up you'll have to name change to above average hobbies...
I think the biggest issue with Failcast was the molds were designed for metal models and then converted to use resin which required GW to add numerous gates to the model. There were some gates that were almost impossible to remove. In my experience, if the model was designed to be resin, the quality of the model is fantastic and the amount of gates required is minimal. Ugh, the Failcast Servitors were terrible, I own two Failcast and 4 metal ones and the quality between them is very noticeable. The new models designed for resin should be fine, my worry is the old metal models returning in resin.
I finally built my Allarielle finecast a few weeks ago. Had been sitting in the cupboard for 10 years. Man that had some work in it to fix the issues. Very messy.
Funny I noticed the the new resin first with the dol amroth knights aswell! I even emailed them to let them know how happy I was. Since then every model I've had form FW has been of a really high quality
Speaking of the damsel, do you have a video of painting the mounted damsel from your Grail knights unit? I was looking a few days ago but didn't see one.
I have ordered this miniature. I hope I can do the figure justice with a decent paint scheme. Thanks for showing the difference in the resins and your paint scheme for the Lady.👏👏👍👍😉
Their modern resin are amazing, but i just don't like working with it with kitbashing. Just. Not as fun or as easy to play with. Saying that endryd haar is going to be a buy for me, but ill never get more than a squad.
I was really excited about Finecast when it was released, because I had lots of experience with models that were really too large to be in metal, and the weight of them would pull them apart. So it was a crushing disappointment to me when my first model arrived with a multitude of bubbles, and the replacement I was sent was as bad, and GW were unable to tell me what their quality control standard was for a good quality cast with their "finecast" resin. It was such a bad experience that it stopped my involvement with the hobby for many years. So, a video like this, looking in detail at the new resin models, is something I appreciate, and might just give me enough confidence to give a resin model from GW another go. The new resin damsel models do look fantastic, so it would be a shame to rule them out entirely just because of how bad my experience with GW resin was in 2011.
Really interesting video. I had only played with 40k plastic and what I recently realised was Finecast Dark Reapers which were awful. I was concerned with OW using the same material but its great to realise that its not only resin, but good resin. I havent seen anyone else point this out (as YT creators seem to favour moaning in general 😂) so well done and thanks.
Is it confirmed that the re-released resin sets you can buy now are using this newer resin? Wondering for the Orc and Night Goblin commands available on the warhammer shop now.
I'm really enjoying your painting. I like some super high end painters but I actually find it discouraging to watch because I know I'll never be able to attain those results. Your painting is great because you focus on the important things like neatness and don't make every model take 70 hours to push to competition levels. I've almost watched enough of your content to break out my old Orcs and Goblin army and get some more paint on them. Haven't painted a model in that army since 2003 I think. I see Kings of War have rules for them so I might even be able to play a game with them.
i believe they have to improve their quality control so that no one have to suffer with terrible resin defects. oh and do looking forward when you are planning to release the guide to paint the damsel.
The real problem is they charged a premium for their miniatures because they are advertising them as the highest quality. Then they produce some of the lowest quality models available on the market for that premium price. The loyal GW sycophants all trumpet the narrative of the highest quality though. I've never bought a fail cast miniature. I've got a few from Forgeryworld which have been pretty good generally as the forgeryworld guys spend the time to take their moulds off the 1 in 100 model GW produce in resin that comes out in decent quality. Plus their resin is much higher quality that GW's ever was. Since 3D printing became a thing for me in 2019 though, well there's no point in forgery world now either.
You should clarify that by "resin" you mean "sculpt". Of course various resins achieves better detail and strength, but what you are talking about is the sculpts and moulds. That is what determines the quality of the figure, not the material it is cast in.
@@MediocreHobbies Yes but in the video you critique the details and sculpting of the models more than the bubbles and the warping. "This is supposed to be a peacock, it looks more like a pteradactyl". A rant about his badly sculpted face. Yes the resin was bad, but it wouldn´t have saved the sculpts or the moulding process if they are bad to start with. The bubbles is air not being able to escape from the mould and gets trapped.
I've always hated resin with a passion, but seeing this troubles my mind. Have I remained ignorant for the sake of just hating on resin? I definitely prefer plastic, but perhaps it's time to give resin another chance!
I was put off buying the new black orc war boss kit but this video has convinced me to give it a go. It will be interesting to see some comparisons with some of the re mastered resin kits. Like the troll hag.
Going through comments and just saw this one after I posted a tutorial on that black orc-maybe check it out and see what you think? I’ve done a troll hag video as well and yeah the difference is…a lot 😄
I heard they were bringing back the Casket of Souls in resin and immediately bought a metal one instead; Failcast has left me extremely distrusting of GW resin products. I had Alarielle the Radiant's shards; she came in bits and pieces instead of being functional and GW did nothing to fix it. Can't find her anymore so I guess I threw her out which is a bit of a shame since I wanted to try repairing her... Oh well! Metal Casket should arrive in one of the upcoming days and I'm super hyped for it. In addition I ordered bases for my High Elves so with a bit of luck I'll have 2 functional armies soon-ish.
@@Alf_Hairy-arse The metal one (according to the seller) makes for a fine thrown weapon if your dicerolls are poor. ;) I jest of course but I have a very strong preference for metal mini's. My favorite Dragon Princes are also still metal (only got 5 of them though sadly), the ones from 6th edition are the best looking ones imho.

finecast in 40k minies still beeing sold is dreadful. I guess thats what people fear. Especially the models that used to be metall and are seemingly still cast in the same mould but with resin.... due to shrinkage of the resin the connections of the model parts often times dont fit right and need greenstuff to fill the atrocious gabs. They are still sold so people do expect similiar quality from the old world.
i think your a fine painter, i cant watch any more video from painter i will never reach. thats why i like your video´s its something that every one can reach and it looks still great
I don’t think the comparison is entirely fair, due to the subject matter… That being said, however, you -are- spot-on with the result… I’ve just received my own damsel and I have to agree - It’s utterly pristine casting quality and easily worth its price tag.
I had 4 squads of finecast striking scorpions to build a single 5 man squad. Beyond being burned by GW resin in the past, if I want to play with resin minis I can buy a 3d printer, all the stls, and enough resin to print a full size army for about the same price of an old world starter set, and the minis will look better than the 20+ year old stuff GW is pushing.
Except the resin stuff GW is selling is mostly brand new, not older stuff? The super old stuff is plastic. Finecast is a pain, but forgeworld resin is really high quality. You're going to be spending a lot more on a printer and STLs up front and have to print an awful lot of models before you see returns on a printer compared to Forge World resin.
I really liked the video and the subject, but there was a really annoying background sound throughout your video that messed up my concentration and I had to force myself to ignore it. I thought it came from outside my own home at first, but then I noticed it stopped when I paused your video. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you let the background beat music throughout your entire video on very low so only a few people (depending on your hearing) would hear it. It sounded to me as the same beat that you had on a higher volume in the end of the video.
I cannot wait for this model to arrive so I can hack it of of the super odd basing choice GW made and get it sitting sensibly. What is she meant to be the baked beans lady parping off the base lmao...
For context, I've been out of the hobby for a while and I'm coming back in. I was looking at the Leopold the Black mini thinking "roooh, it's not so bad!!!" Then I saw the newer mini... o.O
Nice video, always a shame when a decade long Grudge breeds misconceptions. I too have a nostalgia for older minis. Would not mind a paint video for the Damsel, but understand if not - though any chance i could get a paint list? (Mostly the blue used on the back of the cape and shade)
None of that Warhammer forge stuff was ‘finecast’, just old Forgeworld resin. I’m not sure if they’ve actually changed this resin, think they’ve just got better at casting it. You’ve done a disservice to how bad actually ‘finecast’ was/is. Those Warhammer Forge models are fantastic compared to some ‘finecast’.
That Damsel looks a treat. The resin seems different, smoother for one thing. Although some older resins were coarser, mould care was important and as they are used the surface would erode causing loss of detail.
@@johnbruce4004 Each silicone mold can give from 30 to around 100 copies depending on the quality of the silicone (and its price). In time the oils in the silicone dry out because of the exothermic reaction of the resin poured in and loses its non adhesive quality. That means that the finer detailed silicone pieces are prone to tearing up or straight up going off the mold resulting to gaps. Its different to the little pot marks made because of air bubbles. That is why resin although can hold the best detail from all materials (even plastic) is so expensive. Cause the molds have to be done again and again limiting the profits. Now if you are a cutthroat corporation with complete disregard to quality control because tour main target group are fan boys that will take everything and say thank you, you dont have to re-do the molds so often.
@@joek600I always thought that finecast models were just adoption of old metal moulds to be used with resin, this is why quality was so much worse, they didn't use silicone moulds Though I may be wrong, I just retold what I heard
@@gi1dorThats what i heard too. The finecasts were an effort to save money on metal and also to reduce the number of the pickers that filled the blisters from baskets with multiple pieces. The Failcasts were coming on a single frame, so basically we got terrible quality cause GW wanted to save on metal and fire low wage workers. But people should be aware that Forge World is not a guarantee for quality either, cause as I said they tend to use the molds to the point of collapse. Its really a matter of luck, if you get a pack that was early produced while the molds were still fresh, or one of the last batches that will come with all sorts of problems. The air bubble related holes and the slipped castings (result of not closing the mold properly, probably due to haste) are quality control issues that can happen even with fresh molds.
Hardly a fair comparison. While I do not doubt the new resin may really be of better quality, a lot of your criticisms are levelled against the sculpts rather than the actual casting process. It is a lot easier nowadays with computer designed miniatures to sculpt, pose and segment them such that they can be better casted, compared to the hand sculpted masters of the past. And I honestly don't get your beef with Leopold. His face is excellently sculpted, even if it's not to your liking. Better to compare a new re-release of an old model, rather than a new sculpt, if you really want to analyse just the quality of the casting and the material.
Finecast... what a joke, or more like theft... accidentally bought a finecast model from my local store once, didn't notice, and when I came home I looked at it and wondered what on earth was going on and why it looked so horrible, weird, wrong, and ugly. And the amount of cleaning that needed to be done was ridicules, and the fixing needed to make it not look like ass. Met a guy at the same store that heard me complaining to a friend and he shared his Forge World horror story. The annoying and disrespectful thing from GW is that while making these horrible kits other smaller companies like Raging Heroes and Privateer Press had figured out how to cast beautiful and perfect resin model every time for a lot cheaper than finecast and especially Forge World. Considering how expensive Forge World can be you expect quality, like the smaller companies can produce, but no. Then we have the issue of quality control, they claim to have it but considering what they let through it might as well not exist. It is great that they seem to have improved some of their resin models to make them actually look like what they are supposed to look like but I still don't trust them since there is no way to see what model has been improved and what model still looks like it was drawn by a 3 year old child and then left on the radiator to melt for a week. They had the opportunity to make this change a long time ago but didn't. So I will do what I always do, vote with my wallet and either get proxies from other companies or 3D printed models, for me it's too much money to gamble on quality.
Appreciate this video, it did redeem the new Resin releases somewhat. If only GW put effort to alleviate people's concerns about Resin minis, that sure would have helped. I do think they've made improvements, and I'll still take Resin over Metal, but ultimately I still vastly prefer Plastic in all cases and at the prices GW is charging I don't think I'll bother buying non-plastic models (at least not until I go through my backlog).
My new warhammer resin minis look beautiful when they come off my 12k 3d printer build plate 😂 they need to catch up with the current decade and release stls for this stuff, they won't until its unavoidable but thats their loss not mine. What they are selling I'm not buying
Confusing Video, consistently conflates old forgeworld resin with Finecast. Finecast is way worse than the older forgeworld kits as as well as more extreme warping it has tiny extra tabs fixed all over fine details in a failed attempt to avoid air bubbles in the casting. (This comparison is really just between older hand sculpted forgeworld (which will likely be similar quality when they are reintroduced, you can make a new mould from the master but the sculpt is the sculpt!) vs a new digital sculpted model. There are cheerleaders for both styles, hand vs digital but like all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
A few people missed my point and I feel that could be my fault. It’s not so much material or sculpts. All I was trying to cover was so so many people avoid gamesworkshop resin sculpts from previous bad experiences. I just want people to have an open mind about todays quality of material and sculpt. I own so so many old forgeworld kits and there are still more im hunting for. I’m a fan of the old style as much as the new style. But a lot of other people are not.
I get that Andy, I have models in all kinds of formats, metal, plastics, resins and while some folk will always prefer 1 style or material over another I think the single best decision from the Old World Team was to avoid Finecast altogether and stick to metal, plastic and forgeworld resin, just wish they'd do the same for the MESBG range. Lovely paint job by the way :-) @@MediocreHobbies
Ok I’m afraid that this whole video is a bit (a lot) unintentionally misleading. Don’t take this the wrong way but it seems that you make some fundamental mistakes and compare apples to oranges. 1) the first model you displayed is obviously hand sculpted, and under crazy magnification all sorts of flaws are revealed. It’s pretty much the same thing with photographing a really nice painted mini only to realize horrible wrong spots. The only way to compensate for this is to sculpt wearing magnification glasses, but even then you can never achieve the absolutely perfect surface of a digitally sculpted mini. And some times that’s a good thing cause many digital sculpts have a cartoony or cold feel to them, or have stupid unpaintable details. Remember, where a sculpting tool fits, so does your brush. The legitimate problems on the model were those holes and missing edges which were the result of air pockets in the mold. 2) From what I know the fine cast were an effort to use resin, in the already made molds for metal. The resin itself may have some different properties than the usual polyurethane resins used for miniature and scale models, but the main culprit is the casting PROCESS. Every model cast in resin has to be set up in a particular way, that includes the angle it’s set in its mold box, the design of the air vents etc. This vary with each design and some might be done in two part molds while others in cut molds. Even if you use the highest quality polyurethane resin in those Finecast made for metal two part molds, you will get poor result. It’s not the resin. It’s the set up. 3) I’m sculpting and casting my own minis, but also use a local casting service that is close to my house. It just happens that they cast basically all the major European scale model, display figure model houses. If you ever got a Kimera model for example is from them. If you visit their shop there is a huge bin with ‘’miscasts’’ that their only fault might be a tiny fixable bubble. Where I’m getting at is that GW’s quality control is atrocious. Especially when you consider their prices. Forge World the same. Any other company would have gone under long ago. But the dedication of the fanboys is keeping them afloat. Chinese re-casters have better quality standards.
Thanks for taking the time to comment pal. I agree I could have spent more time and explained myself a little better. I think most people got what I meant.
Fail cast was a complete bomb - both in terms of production method and quality control. GW customer service was horrible, and I ended up with several unusable models. Basically, wasted money. As for myself, I've moved on and purchased my own 3D printer with print results approaching mold-prouced resin models. I appreciate the review and your excellent paint job.
In addition, it seems like the new resin moulds are new moulds, and not just a cheap resin dumped into already existing moulds that were originally tooled for metal models.

The resin, the camera, the paint job, that's far too much awesome in one video, you keep this up you'll have to name change to above average hobbies...
Hahhaha cheers pal.
Old metal models returning in resin will be interesting I think they will be great.
I finally built my Allarielle finecast a few weeks ago. Had been sitting in the cupboard for 10 years.
Man that had some work in it to fix the issues. Very messy.
Ye it’s not a fun experience.
Funny I noticed the the new resin first with the dol amroth knights aswell! I even emailed them to let them know how happy I was. Since then every model I've had form FW has been of a really high quality
You lucky duck.
Speaking of the damsel, do you have a video of painting the mounted damsel from your Grail knights unit? I was looking a few days ago but didn't see one.
I do not she was painted on one of my twitch streams.
@@MediocreHobbies Ah, shame. Thanks for the swift response.
yes , i would like a step by step....awesome paint job
Ok I can arrange that.
Great video, I don’t necessarily want a full step by step, but just a quick shot of each paint you use would be appreciated
Cool beans.
My brother, This is legit your best paint job to date. for sure do a full guide :) best old content on the youtubes!
Thanks man! It will be out this week!
Really hope Warhammer Forge minis come back. There was some really nice sculpts that I never managed to get.
I’m missing a few as well I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on.
Great video. Keep up the good work. Recently painted up Remus Ventanus in resin, really nice detail and a good looking Ultramarine.
Glad you liked it pal.
I have some finecast fantasy sculpts that I’ll likely never attempt just from the sheer about of work that needs to go into them to repair the sculpt.
Sad to hear that pal.
A gorgeous miniature, and your paintjob does it justice.
Cheers pal.
I have ordered this miniature. I hope I can do the figure justice with a decent paint scheme. Thanks for showing the difference in the resins and your paint scheme for the Lady.👏👏👍👍😉
Thanks man! I'm aiming to post the full tutorial for the damsel this week, hope it helps!
3:40 Whoa! That's quite the jump scare. Do the resin bloodbowl miniatures have the same issues?
Nope resin bloodbowl resin is the new resin as well.
Cheers Andy! Appreciate your comments and look at the new style resin
Cheers pal.
Their modern resin are amazing, but i just don't like working with it with kitbashing.
Just. Not as fun or as easy to play with.
Saying that endryd haar is going to be a buy for me, but ill never get more than a squad.
No it’s not great for kit bashing.
Thanks for making this video! i must admit that I was pretty worried giving previous experiences with Forgeworld resin and Finecast.
Glad I could help.
You assembled your damsel the same way i assembled mine. Good choice.
Dam straight. I do want another one though.
I'm gonna order a second one when i get Lady Elise Duchaard
Exactly pal.
That detail is INSANE! Yeah I'm gonna order her when I next expand my Bretonnian's.
Good to hear pal.
I would love to see an tutorial of your painting the damsel. looks really good :)
Coming out tonight! 😊
Creature Caster makes nice resin models, many of which can be Warhammer proxies.
They do indeed.
Have you thought of using several heraldry transfers on the inside of her cloak to form a pattern. Just break up such a large block of colour.
I had not. Not a bad idea.
Hahaha cheers pal. And yes they do like to moan don’t they lol.
Beautiful model and great job painting it 👍🏻
Cheers pal.
Is it confirmed that the re-released resin sets you can buy now are using this newer resin? Wondering for the Orc and Night Goblin commands available on the warhammer shop now.
For the rerelease I’m really not sure. I know the new warboss is as I’ve got and painted him already.
That is a really beautiful job on the Damsel!
thanks man
I'm really enjoying your painting.
Sounds like a plan. I hope you do get stuck back into painting. And thank you for your kind words.
Would love to see the whole process on the Damsel.
It's on the way, might try to post it this week!
i believe they have to improve their quality control so that no one have to suffer with terrible resin defects. oh and do looking forward when you are planning to release the guide to paint the damsel.
Hoping to get the damsel video out this week!
My night goblin command had the exact same issues, just adds a lot of unnecessary work on the customer to try and make things look proper
Yup
Interesting points. I don’t agree with a few of them.
I was really hoping you’d paint lietpolt the black after the Damsel, just to show the difference.
He might still get painted, just hard facing him after how nice the damsel was :D
Great comparison, I kinda expected an improvement but the new resin is over the top apparently.
Yes it’s so good.
You should clarify that by "resin" you mean "sculpt". Of course various resins achieves better detail and strength, but what you are talking about is the sculpts and moulds. That is what determines the quality of the figure, not the material it is cast in.
Not entirely true. As the fine cast resin caused so many airbubles and warping.
Oh 100% plastic is key but don’t turn your nose up on stunning models just cos there resin.
Not sure whether to mention this or not, but the new resin one has been resulpted to include details I the casket.
Fair I have a metal one and I will be getting the new resin one to see if all the new Details are worth it.
@@MediocreHobbies Hopefully it's cool as well tbh, just got my 2 Necrosphinx boxes and Settra in so that's the rare and mount for the general options covered. Still waiting for the main army box to be reprinted and I may need another few archers to go with some Tomb Guard I'm looking at while reading up on the rules.
finecast in 40k minies still beeing sold is dreadful.
Exactly my fear. And what I want people to understand isn’t happing with the new stuff.
i think your a fine painter, i cant watch any more video from painter i will never reach. thats why i like your video´s its something that every one can reach and it looks still great
That’s really nice to hear pal.
I don’t think the comparison is entirely fair, due to the subject matter… That being said, however, you -are- spot-on with the result… I’ve just received my own damsel and I have to agree - It’s utterly pristine casting quality and easily worth its price tag.
Glad you agree pal.
Go for it.
Hmmm I will check with the editor and see what happened. Cheers.
I would love to have the damsel if only it didn't go out of stock every 5 minutes.
Yeah you need the email alerts on to catch one :D
I cannot wait for this model to arrive so I can hack it of of the super odd basing choice GW made and get it sitting sensibly. What is she meant to be the baked beans lady parping off the base lmao...
I like it.
I'd love to see the Damsel tutorial
It's on the way!
That fig is more than CRAZY !!!! Woooooooow
Yuuuup
great video! any joy getting the saurus warriors onto 30mm bases yet?
I'm working on another one of those videos!
For context, I've been out of the hobby for a while and I'm coming back in. I was looking at the Leopold the Black mini thinking "roooh, it's not so bad!!!" Then I saw the newer mini... o.O
Hahaha yeah two different worlds!
These resin models have yet to even be made available in the US
It's weird, not sure what their worldwide roll out plan is
Nice video, always a shame when a decade long
Grudge breeds misconceptions. I too have a nostalgia for older minis.
Would not mind a paint video for the Damsel, but understand if not - though any chance i could get a paint list? (Mostly the blue used on the back of the cape and shade)
Aiming to get the damsel video edited and posted this week!
I really enjoyed this type of content.
Great to hear that, thanks for letting me know!
you are very good at painting. not mediocre in any way. you aren't like gold demon painter but I always love your minis
Hahah cheers pal.
Man she's awesome...!!! I think all your videos are cool..
Cheers pal.
The only difference here is hand sculpted vs CAD sculpted. I would take the Leopold over the damsel any day.
Each to there own.
It is indeed new resin.
@@joek600I always thought that finecast models were just adoption of old metal moulds to be used with resin, this is why quality was so much worse, they didn't use silicone moulds
Though I may be wrong, I just retold what I heard
Wish the damsel was sold in the us....still waiting
It is. It’s just sold out all the bloody time. Such a pain.
Quick question, with the lack of access to GW Bretonnian models. Who would you recommend as a proxy company until GW is back in stock?
Proxy wars.
Not an easy ask. It sure what what mode as Cast in both.
Great video, the sculpt and material will really help us mediocre painters.
I agree pal.
Mediocre you definitely are not. Keep doing what you are doing 👍👍
Cheers pal.
Finecast... what a joke, or more like theft... accidentally bought a finecast model from my local store once, didn't notice, and when I came home I looked at it and wondered what on earth was going on and why it looked so horrible, weird, wrong, and ugly.
I’m a collector at heart so I love trying to get my hands on the actual models.
The damsel, is this one on foot or unicorn?
Did you not watch the video?
@MediocreHobbies I commented before i saw which damsel it was, plus they'd just done MTO for the old damsels so wasn't sure
Agreed plastic is king.
12:30 a wimple?
Emmmmmm I have no idea.
Would love to see the extended video of the painting of this one. 👍
Good to know.
My new warhammer resin minis look beautiful when they come off my 12k 3d printer build plate 😂 they need to catch up with the current decade and release stls for this stuff, they won't until its unavoidable but thats their loss not mine. What they are selling I'm not buying
Up to you.
I built fine cast and ive built forgeworld and its night and day not even close
More people that back me in the comments the more it helps.
Wow, you've put me off the resin entirely. Zero character, might as well be a 3d print.
Each to there own pal.
Cool vid dude :)
Thanks 😊
looking great

good to know
Cheers.
Loved the vid
Cheers pal.
One of those times I'm happy yo be wrong. Thanks for the info.
Appreciate that energy!
'Mediocre.'
I don't think that word means what you think means... 😉
Hahahhah to kind.
Finecast was absolute shit, but this new stuff looks really good.
Yeah it's class
@@MediocreHobbiesMost people got that it was the resin's fault. Its not.
poeple alway complaining about the resin from gw and then they go and print them self some resin models :)
Hahhaha always.
