I had confused the Cinematic Studio Strings with the Cinematic or Cine Strings series for a long time, so it was quite the happy surprise to learn of the Strings Ensemble (& Solo Strings) libraries just last month via a user demo, which IMO are easily the most realistic Legato Strings samples I've ever heard, & was shocked to read that it was a more Chamber sized ensemble that was sampled for how lush they sound, proof that bigger is not always better to achieve fullness & realism!
Yes, such a gorgeous sound from a smaller ensemble! Similar to PS Vista.

As usual a great review of these libraries. They ARE awesome. Someday maybe, someday. They really are not too expensive all things considered and by comparison to other developers. But they are equally as good sounding and as you mention, responsive to the touch and so forth. Your explanations and demonstration of the different instrument libraries, articulations and sounds are always well presented and clear. Thanks for sharing these insights. I know these are some you use a lot and while they are your "go-to" samples, I appreciate that you don't make anyone feel that anything other than these they might have are not as good or not as useful. We all have our favorites but these are most definitely "on my list" of libraries to consider in the near future to start adding to the libraries. Who knows, they might become my favorites too. They do sound superb. thanks for sharing this. As you got into the SOLO strings I appreciate that in the solo violin, the low G has NO vibrato it appears. I don't mind vibrato - but some libraries that have vibrato also have it throughout - when playing an open G string there isn't any - can't be any. And this library seems to do that. Brilliant in my book. And like you, I like the simplicity of the GUI. Straightforward and easy to use evidently.

I would love to see a comparison video between Cinematic Studio Series with Spitifire Audio's Studio Orchestra series... You don't see too many comparison videos on YT regarding competing libraries.
I have the Spitfire Studio Series. So sorry to say that. I am not really happy. They sound very strange. Espacially the brass. Like they are wrong programed. Maybe its just me, that is not happy. The strings snd woods are good and ok.

CS Series is amazing, CSS is my main string library, the woodwinds I don't own but is one of the best that I've heard (in demos and reviews) and the Brass is probably the only one that rivals with my dear Cinebrass. Great video Chris!

I've been planning to expand my horizons and use new libraries, but I like Cinematic Studio Series so much that it's all that I've been using for strings, brass, and ww's lately 😅

-Do you think the laggy legato can be fixed by using backwards delay compensation in my DAW? I feel like this would be an easier way for me to work with the libraries.
-Is there any delay in the beggining of the samples? Do you know if it's consistent between all the libraries?

I was wondering if you might consider making a video wherein you showcase the same composition rendered several times each with different string libraries by themselves -- to demonstrate the tonal nuances of different companies on standard (out of the box) articulations like sustains, swells, staccatos. These libraries are just amazing but I have latency on all libraries especially in woodwinds and strings and sometimes they are not playing like my pressing the keys. Do you know what is the reason?

Chris, if I understand correctly, when you move the modulation wheel of your keyboard, CSS has also mapped the expression and volume in it? If not, how do you change the volume and the timbre at the same time? do you use 2 wheels? or you just mapped manually more than 2 CC's into the modulation wheel? You mentioned something at the strings review part of this video but I am not sure I understood it correctly.

Hi Jim! I generally only use the modwheel, which definitely has the dynamic layers applied to it. I’m not as sure about general volume, although I’ll use volume automation as needed at the end of a mix.

Chris, do you prefer "advanced legato" mode instead of the usual classical one? Do you think there is big difference between them? I do usually use the advanced one but it sometimes feels tiring to programme all the notes out there :)
Good question! Yes I typically use the Advanced Legato. I have no issues with moving the notes back myself :)

That might be good for realistic performance, but with CSS 1.7, it will be a new difference for the new realistic sound.
May CSB would have new upgrade as well for making an amazing new realistic sound.
The way around the delay is using a negative track delay, not sure how it works on logic, but there is this feature in Cubase. I reckon on one of the legato tutorial videos from the company he said exactly how many milliseconds you need to compensate for each type of legato. So you can always keep your midi quantized

Hi, so I use Musescore to write/compose . I mostly write for a full symphony orchestra, I am looking for a good DAW, I have never ever used one before. Pretty much all I have is an iMac computer on which I write, no midi keyboard. So my question is this...what would you recommend for me , I really would love to get in to this, so can I for example import a score I have completed from Musescore and then use Cinematic studios strings, woodwind and brass ( I suspect I would have to look at other alternatives for percussion). Can you or anyone help me ?
Hi Daniel, Logic Pro X is the go-to for Macs, but I'm not sure about importing a score into Logic. I'm not an expert in that unfortunately.
Hi Daniel, you may have to fully recreate / perform the scores - sample libraries like this are amazing but you have to perform or input the automation for dynamics, the articulations, using faders etc.; and the legato delay will require use of multi-script or hand adjusting each line there is many different delays depending on type of legato occurring (unless you use less realistic 'classic legato patches). This library also controls type of legato by velocity of note input (instead of dynamics) so you'll have to learn and input these velocities then adjust for variety of delays. The legato also requires overlap between the notes to occur so it won't match a score exactly. I use the logic score editor but then extend the notes all by 32nd length so they have overlap and it triggers legato. Just be prepared to spend a lot of production time on this - I think that's why many composers use products like the AI automatic plugins like Noteperformer instead which reads your score and translates it into midi audio that responds to dynamic markings, rubato, articulation (it works for score based notation like Sibelius - unfortunately not Musescore; it sounds like Musescore 4 is developing its own plugin like Noteperformer instead of compatibility with it or licensing with it - not sure the details) - to focus their time on composition rather than DAW production skills (which can require different habits than how you'd project for a real orchestra). Learning to compose in DAW and how to use these sample libraries is cool in that you can create tracks that sound pretty realistic but if you're composing for live musicians and don't need hyper realistic mockups or your not relying on midi for your final product probably better directions than this to go in. If you do want final product midi versions - then this is an awesome way to go, that's why I've been using DAW and these high end libraries.

Check out Ableton too - I've heard it is setup well for creative work flow but haven't tried it out yet; I've been learning Logic X for 3 years so we're kind of married at this point. And all the stuff I mentioned is more time consuming than difficult to learn - so many helpful videos on TH-cam and VI-Control forum has tons of great info too. Have fun and happy composing!

Yes, and for the most part they are very accurate! I still have to tweak things every once and a while, but if I stick to the values given, it’s spot on about 90% of the time!

how old is Cinematic Studio Strings. I think its pretty old. I wonder how it compares against Modern Scoring Strings by Audio bros
I much prefer MSS, and own both. I really don't get the love for CSS. It's okay, but its also very 'vanilla' so to speak. Nothing special about the tone, and the articulations and styles are sorely lacking - no real sordino (it's fake), and no option at all for Sul Tasto, Sul Pont, etc. No divis options so no option for smaller sections or sounds. It just feels lacking to me - and its no longer in my template at all.
I now have MSS as my main string library, and also Albion Neo ensembles for its A/B divisi and interest articulations like Super Flautando and such.
CSS may be fine if your goal is making mock-ups that will later be recorded by an orchestra, but as a final-result library I don't think it sounds good at all.
Truthfully though, I actually find I use Neo a lot more than MSS now as well. The A/B divisi sections really make it nice to get different sounds (small/large, mix of flautando and standard, etc). In most cases, I find I don't even need individual sections and work much faster with ensemble strings.
Would you like 100% recommend CSSS? I really would like a realistic sounding String Quartet/ Solo String Ensemble Library that really blends well together
For blending and emotional solo lines, I love them. However they’re not the most deeply sampled and might not serve more classical styles best.

I don't get the love for Cinematic Strings... It's a bar bones library with only the bare-bones articulations and style. It lacks any interesting articulations like Sul Tasto or Sul Pont, or heaven forbid Flautando. The Sordino is simulated also. They lack any divisi options, so if you want a smaller or more interesting sound - it's a no-go. No polyphonic legato.
I'd take Modern Scoring Strings any day of CSS. Good legato, solo instrument options and divisi options. Real Sordino, Sul Tasto, and Sul Pont.
I hope you still look at comments from a 1 year old video. I'm just getting started with SoloStrings and StudioStrings. I am using some midi I created for a different library. I find the legato setting gets out of control quickly and I have to really tweak the length, velocity and overlap to control it. Not very forgiving. For the lower strings is much easier to turn off legato and get the fixed envelope. What is your experience? Also, do you normally pack in different libraries into one Kontakt instance of spread them out of more instances? thx
