    Great review. Double D ring is the safest. They never break loose at crash. All motorcycle helmets use D ring. In riding situation where you want protection of a full face helmet, you probably also wants D ring on it.

      Motorcycle helmets in the *US* primarily use D rings. Other countries have mostly moved on to metallic ratchets which are just as good and operable with gloved hands. That's one of the big reasons I got my Shoei GT Air 2 :)

    Own one.
    'FANTASTIC HELMET.'
    Like yourself I probably needed a size up, but a Full Face is all about a snug fit.
    Upon removal I just remove the cheek padding, easy x2 stud removal each side.
    Concur about Chin Strap, though Helmet such a snug fit wear unstrapped, with strap retracted in strap sheath.
    I usually don't wear a helmet so this purchase was a lifesaver.
    As for ventilation and weight this Helmet kick's ass.
    Plus as for look's Unsurpassed.
    Very happy to attack any terrain confident in protection capability.
    TOP Pro MTB Rider's made request's for a helmet to tick all the boxes.
    This is the result.
    BUY ONE.

  • @tonyrichengod9280

    Nice review man. I'm pretty much sold on this helmet as my next one for trail riding on my 2-stroke, as well as some moto enduros. It gets super hot where I'm at (95 degrees at an enduro race last weekend) so I need all the venting I can get.
    Yea I know, these helmets are designed for MTB, but looking at some MTB downhill videos. you guys travel downhill at speeds WAAAAYY higher than I'll ever dare on my KTM, all while doing crazy stunts. If this helmet is good enough for that, it's good enough for me.

    • @Bike198
      @Bike198  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think they are more designed for MTB (completely guessing) because mountain bikes need more ventilation because we have to climb without a motor. My DH helmets were just as good as the moto versions. If you aren't crashing above 40 mph...you are good to use both I'm sure. Moto helmets have a higher crash speed to account for for certifications.

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    7:40 the thing I hate about this is that the strap could go out of adjustment, so I guess you could sew it so it does not.
    I've been using d ring buckle for years, I don't have any troubles with closing or opening it, unless it gets icy, but the warmth of your hand in 1 minute or so fixes that.

  • @mikeh9949
    @mikeh9949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great review, while I've been looking at some full face helmets, it's great to hear how well vented the smith is and how custom fit it is. I'd definitely agree that the D strap is a turn off.
    Have you consider trying the Fox Proframe, Troy lee design Stages or bell super air R?

    • @Bike198
      @Bike198  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the vented full face helmets, it is really important to be able to get it off quickly and easily I have found. I love the idea of the magnets with the Fox.

    • @ivan.rusanov
      @ivan.rusanov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Magnetic buckle is really great and easy, but D-style one isn't that bad when you get used to it. Most of the time you can remove the helmet without actually undoing the strap completely. The opening is large enough to go infront of your face. Next time you put it on your head you only have to tighten it up and snap the button in place.

    I do not agree in one point. I've heard a lot of users complains about D ring. Everybody say it is hard to do and undo the latch. But YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THAT. When you want to take off the helmet, you just need to loosen the strap by pulling the red flag or just twisting the rings, do not disconnect it. If you learn how to use this D ring, you will find it is in fact more usefull than other clips. You can even easily adjust the fit of belt during ride depending on which track you are. Believe me. There is a lot of videos on YT explaining that. I"m wearing now a 100% Trajecta helmet with D ring and I love it.

    I currently have two SmithOptics Forefront II helmets.. I want extra protection from side impact because i'm only 6" off the ground on a Fast Recumbent Tadpole trike.. I was hit years ago when a driver ran a RED LIGHT, (while texting).. I was hit from the side.. The ER doctor told me that the MIPS and Koroyd saved my life.. He also rides with the Smith Forefront II... I'm a little disappointed that the new Mainline doesn't have a quick connect chin strap.. And the fact that the Sun Visor is useless because it is intended for leaning over the handlebars.. I'm leaning back in a recumbent position... SO.. it would have been nice if the Visor was more adjustable to lower it to block the sun.. Smith makes helmets intended for only one rider in mind.. I wish they would consider that other riders need an adjustable visor. and many Goggles are not compatible with helmets. the Helmet is supposed to come down just over the eyebrow. This protects against impact to the front of the skull .. So riding with the helmet shifted back to accommodate the goggle is dangerous if you hit head on..

    Great review, thank you! I'm hesitating between a full-face that I can remove the chin protection or just a complete full-face like this one. Since it offers a great ventilation, I might consider it. Most of the places I go I need to climb so I don't want a helmet where I can hardly breathe and that I need to remove but on the otherside, I want to make sure my head is protected.

  • @ivan.rusanov

    That MIPS squeaking noises get worse with time, but I have fixed mine with some soft fabric tape (made by tesa, but there are probably others). I have removed the MIPS plastic shell (it is attached with 4 rubber tabs) and taped the inside of the helmet with that tape. Then attached the MIPS shell back to the helmet and it now rubs on the tape and not the foam directly.
    It has eliminated the squeaking noise completely and I only hear a muffled noise from the slight movement. You have the same noise on most MIPS-equipped helmets.
    You have to be careful with these rubber tabs, but they come easily through the holes of the MIPS plastic if you twist them slightly. Removing the padding also helps.
    The new Trigger FF MIPS has, what seems to be, an updated MIPS shell design with some different rubber attachments that are probably designed to eliminate/reduce the noise. I expect more helmets to integrate that new variant in the future.
    Other than that, I find the Mainline very comfortable, much more than my old Bell SuperDH (which had cracking noises, due to the convertible construction) and it's not heavier. Haven't ridden it much yet, so can't comment on durability.

    • @ivan.rusanov
      @ivan.rusanov ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NK-mi2yn Mine is still doing fine with that "fix". I had to do another fix to the helmet though: the plastic screws for the visor were getting loose all the time, so I decided to apply some blue loctite thread-locker. It was a bad idea - somehow this made the screws very brittle and they both snapped in half. Replaced them with some metal screws with flat heads. That was the night before a race... Despite these issues, I would buy Mainline again if I need a new helmet.

    Solid review, I actually went down pretty good the other day and face planted resulting in some swelling around the eyes and a gashed chin and nose. I was wearing my Bell Super DH but didn't have the chin guard with me because it was supposed to be an easy ride. I'm now looking at this as a new helmet and was wondering if you have strapped a GoPro to it? The Bell Super DH sounds horrible on camera because of the mips, I'm hoping the Smith isn't as bad.

    This technology just caught my attention, I’m a downhill free rider and I’m looking for a new helmet and I saw that the Smith Mainline has this technology, how Koroyd will behave in case of multiple medium to high impacts? As a downhill rider you go down hard but you stand up and do it again and maybe go down hard again. Is koroyd a technology that will allow to do that or after the first free ride crash the koroyd will compress and compressed and after so many uses the koroyd will become flat? Or should I go for. Let’s say a bell 8 fusion that many pro riders and rampage riders are using?

      So far...the Smith vents better but the POC is quieter and has more of a transitional full face feel. I really like the fact that the POC went with the buckle strap for longer rides.

    • @ivan.rusanov
      @ivan.rusanov 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super Air is very light and is convertible, but that's the only advantage. It's a helmet that I would be reluctant to trust myself for full-on enduro. My brother has one and the padding on the cheeks is really minimal, the whole helmet looks and feels like a plastic toy. The chinbar tabs got loose over time and are rattling now. If I wanted a really lightweight fullface helmet, I would probably get IXS Trigger FF MIPS. It seems better than the Bell, more comfortable and it is also lighter (my brother just got it to replace the Bell Air R helmet).

      @@elilaw1377 TLD Stage was one of the options in my short list, but decided to buy the Mainline, because it was discounted here in a local shop and I could try it first. M was too small for me, L fits fine with the middle-sized cheek pads. My head circumference is around 59cm. The Stage should be nice helmet though!

    What was the thing that smith goggles fit better to this or what?

    • @Bike198

      The helmet manufactures generally make the googles they make go flush with the top of the helmet for better air flow and aesthetics.
