  • This video is part 1 of 2. I detail a flight on a Boeing 767-400 from JFK Airport in New York City to the Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas. Part 1 focuses on how air traffic control helps us get to the runway and leave the New York City area while part 2 focuses on the gorgeous approach to Las Vegas.

    Thank you for another great video. Loved the views. Here is a funny coincidence, KROC main runway is 4/22. Last weekend, we had severe winds. I was listening to ATC and looking at my Plane Finder app. It was a challenging day. Runway used was 28. Many missed approaches, and diversions to KSYR. It was interesting tracking all of this. Ps that is one cool shirt you are wearing.

    Very cool! I was very interested in this since I hope to experience JFK next summer. Also, back in May I did a simulator flight in a Sismo 737-800 cockpit, non-motion simulator, and I chose JFK to take off from...because it's a rather famous airport (at least I think so). After learning how to start up a jet (with many details and steps) from the instructor, we got virtually pushed back from the gate and I had to taxi to the runway. I'm sure the runways were marked with numbers in the simulation, but I totally don't remember which one I took off from, as I was kind of busy! 😃 Then, once we took off, I had to follow the "flight director" screen and make various adjustments to the flight path as we climbed. The instructor even remarked that the climb out seemed complicated (or something to that effect). Well, I know why after watching several of your videos...because of the number of airports so close to each other! My virtual flight was up the coast to Boston, so I don't know how much different it was compared to flights that head toward the western part of the country. The big thing missing from a simulated flight was, of course, no radio, no communication with ATC like in real life. (There weren't even harnesses for the pilot seats. Otherwise, the cockpit was true-to-life.) Also, in the simulator, you can choose what type of weather you want to fly in--I chose clear with a few puffy clouds. And I'll be hoping that NYC has clear weather next year in June! Meanwhile, I just flew from Seattle to San Diego a couple weeks ago and had a clear view of the mountains in CA, plus, a great view of Reno!!! (I made a video! 🙂) P.S. I saw a Delta B767 at the San Diego Airport, tail # N843MH.

    • @PeterMasella
      @PeterMasella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simulator sounds awesome! I have never been in one. I'm glad you got to experience this! ATC and the New York area adds a whole new dimension to flying. Thanks for watching, as always, Shirley! I'm watching your video now!

    Great videos, just stumbled upon your channel yesterday. Love the detail! Slight suggestion to compliment your ridiculously good story telling skills would be to provide some visual queues? Perhaps a thrown together map showing the route you're talking about or provide some context to the ATC audio ?

    I believe this flight to Vegas was on October 10th 2021 and the Salt Lake flight couldn't have been a few weeks before on November 7th 2021 doesn't make sense. Notwithstanding the morass I enjoy your narration and knowledge keep the postings coming. The Steelers vs Broncos game was on October 10th 2021 as from the lounge TV shot in the video.

    • @PeterMasella
      @PeterMasella  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! The flight to Las Vegas was filmed on October 11, 2021. The video that I referenced from November 7, 2021 was actually filmed on September 22, 2021, a few weeks before October 11, 2021. I only posted the video I filmed on September 22, 2021 on November 7, 2021. My thought that it would be easier to mention the day that I posted the video, rather than the actual date of flight which I never mention in the video. Both videos are in sequential order, but both are uploaded well after the date of the actual filming.

    Great video. You should talk about v-speeds during takeoff roll sometime. Are you learning to fly, btw?

    • @PeterMasella
      @PeterMasella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Thats a great idea. My channel is more focused on air traffic so most of my narrative focuses on routing and the relationship between other aircraft (which makes the channel unique). No, I am not learning how to fly! I just enjoy doing this.

    Why is there a right turn after takeoff but not a right turn for landing on the 22s?

    • @PeterMasella
      @PeterMasella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DFWAvgeek521! The turn after takeoff was a right turn (off of runway 4L), not a left turn.

    • @JoeDFWAviation
      @JoeDFWAviation 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterMasella oops! Fixed it

    • @PeterMasella
      @PeterMasella  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeDFWAviation For aircraft landing on the 22s at JFK, they will make a left turn to join the final approach course. They make a left turn instead of a right turn because a right turn means that they would be coming from LaGuardia's airspace which is very close to JFK. The left turn to the final allows them to stay clear of LGA. Of course they do this at least 5-15 miles out so they can join the final approach course. Departures off of runway 4L turn right immediately as they do not need to fly straight (like arrivals on an ILS do). The right turn keeps them away from LGA and since departing aircraft are louder than arriving aircraft, the right turn keeps them away from areas that are subject to a lot of noise!
