he is playing with emotion. Have u ever seen him play live? I have many times..and trust me...there is plenty of emotion. You can feel what he plays. He is truely one of the greats!!
@GuitardedMark thats because these are active pups, also not alot of companies make 7 string pups and even after that i dont see anything wrong with his tone
@molomono that is right and i know that. but when you augment the second in A phrygian you get a key change from F major/ D minor to C major/ A minor and play in the aeolian mode of those. when it should become harmonic minor as you said, you need a major third and not an augmented second. cause when you augment the second you have nowhere a major 7th.
Hopefully you've gotten better. Remember, with shredding, the faster you play the more economical your technique and movements must be. Its less about having fast fingers and more about timing and efficiency. Focus on only lifting your finger from and pressing on the string as little as it possible takes to get a clear note. Same with the pick. Don't move any further from the string then absolutely needed. Same goes for velocity. Less is more with shredding. Less movement equals faster notes. Don't quit though. I never thought I'd be able to play Jeff's material even after my first decade of playing and I thought I had reached my ceiling but I just kept playing and trying to do what he does here and there and eventually i got it. Master picking and study Paul Gilbert lessons on picking. And ifnyou haven't already, incorporate economy picking as well instead of strictly alternate picking
@molomono just a little theory lesson: phrygian isnt a scale, it's a mode of the ionian system (also known as "church scales") there is no such thing as phrygian major. all 8 modes contain the same 8 notes, and it all depends on where you root it if it's major or minor. and jason becker did. sadly not anymore though.
@molomono then you have a major 3rd and not an augmented second, and then it's just A harmonic minor. when you augment the second when playing A phrygian the result is A aeolian. i dont see how a mode can be major. btw, the piano thing is right as long as you're in A minor or C major. but if you play in like Db major you'll get a problem just using the white keys. you can shift the diatonic scale to whatever root you want, it remains the same shape (just some frets higher or lower on guitar).
@hahawzz don't worry about the size of the neck. it's extremely comfortable. i was worried about it even after i bought it, but after playing it for 10 minutes i knew it was the best guitar i've ever played.
@molomono yes, phrygian dominant is right, but it has a major third and not an augmented second. it is 100% the same as harmonic minor. it's called dominant cause when you have A minor, the dominant chord is E minor. when you have a major 3rd tough, the dominant chord is E major. you hear that change often in flamenco and classical music, it's a very distinct chord progression. augmented second just results in a key change and aeolian.
@givemeajackson I have no clue haha, i just learn the modes/scales etc. Phrygian Major was part of the list i learned. Is it possible that it was mislabeled, what if it was Phyrgian dominant? Would that be possible?
Met him at Best Buy guitar place! lol. back then i didn't even know who he was! And like had a conversation me and shit. i didn't even know!!!! he plays for me and i play infront of him. he gives me tips and compliments. he said play to play what u love, and never give up. and also to play scales, cause i played sloppy back then
@givemeajackson The Phrygian scale i'm talking about is the same scale as the Harmonic minor 5th position. Also no Aeolian is the 6th mode of the diatonic scale you shift the whole mode 3 full full tones from phrygian to get Aeolian, The way i see it is the Diatonic scale is all white key's on the piano. However the Phrygian Major is when you augment the distance between the second and third note of the scale, IE G becomes G# in the key of E.
@ottozing yea ive seen an ibanez baritone and of course they make six strings! and about the tone well im not a big fan of nevermore so ive never hearnd theyre music but his tone doesnt sound bad at all in fact his tone is pretty difficult to reproduce because he uses an Axe Fractal guitar rack effects
@givemeajackson You might want to relearn the Diatonic scale. It's basicly just A B C D E F G Now depending on which note you start you get Iolian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian or locrian. When you augment anything in the diatonic scale you CAN"T have another mode, what you get is a new scale. By coincidence the Harmonic Minor's 5th shape is the same as Phrygian Major 1st. And yes i know the modes remain the same shape, full full half full full half full.
@A7XfoREVer578 No phrygian dominant is phrygian with a major 3rd, Harmonic minor is a minor scale with a major 7th. They are relative though, D phrygian dominant is G harmonic minor.
@givemeajackson From all i can see Phrygian Major is the same as the dominant because in the harmonic minor scales it is the 5th and that is the dominant. It supposably has "a distinctive augmented second interval" but whatever, when i play it it's not aeolian that's for sure.
@molomono i dunno how you call it, i know it as the ionian system. and when you augment the second it becomes nothing but aeolian, nothing major phrygian! and theory reaches waaaaaaaay further than scales, you're right on that one. modes are just different positions of one and the same scale, exactly like in pentatonic.
@givemeajackson And yes if you start on Db you get a bit more of a complicated scale note-wise but the principle stays the same. This however is irrelevant from the point that phrygian major is a scale. The Augmented Second Phrygian mode.
@molomono phrygian dominant is phrygian dominant, i have no idea what phrygian major should be, and i doubt that it exists. the name is completely unlogical, cause a mode cant be major or minor. when you have phrygian like A Bb C D E F G A ( F major/ D minor) and augment the second, you get A B C D E F G A wich is either G ionian or A aeolian. see? when playing dominant, you go from A Bb C D E F G A to A Bb C# (
Finally! Someone who agrees with me! Everytime I mention his goofy, over-the-top faces he makes and the fan blowing his hair back and all the other crap that we must endure, I always get crucified. The guys got talent, no doubt, but he needs to tone it down BIG time and let his fingers do the showboating, not his stupid antics. Thank you for bringing that up. I am right there with you~
And here we are 8 years later and he's career is better than ever. His "antics" are part of how he expresses himself. I hate haters like you who put others down for that. Look at you no name. You're nothing.
jeff lomies got it right he plays killer solos, but also fucking amazing riffs what I find sometimes are guitar players who play somewhat mediocre riffs that are kinda forgettable and on the solos they start wanking their guitars like there's no tomorrow, but the riffs of jeff really stick out and his solos too
All of his songs have feeling. fast or not. not all of his tracks are fast either. ever hear "Precognition"? It's on youtube why dont you check it out. and tell me there is no feeling.
@Gu1tari5t then try to play it. if you think that is basic shit it shouldnt be any problem for you... even if you dont like the music, you have to admit that his technical skill is impressive! and jeff is a very versatile player too.
It's actually disturbing to watch how Loomis pulls up string-skipping at that speed with no hassle at all. This being said, I still think that he has to change his hair style :P
he is playing with emotion. Have u ever seen him play live? I have many times..and trust me...there is plenty of emotion. You can feel what he plays.
He is truely one of the greats!!
@GuitardedMark thats because these are active pups,
also not alot of companies make 7 string pups
and even after that i dont see anything wrong with his tone
iv'e been waiting for this for the last week,
it is a great day.
Jeff makes every note sound EPIC...........
I LOVE these lessons with Loomis!
I just play them in standard tuning (the parts that I can).
MOOOORE!!!!!
This riff looks like a fun exercise.
I envy Jeff Loomis's precision when he plays.
Jeff's 'slow' is my 'fast'..There goes my guitar
Hopefully you've gotten better. Remember, with shredding, the faster you play the more economical your technique and movements must be. Its less about having fast fingers and more about timing and efficiency. Focus on only lifting your finger from and pressing on the string as little as it possible takes to get a clear note. :) LOVE Mr. Loomis!!
@A7XfoREVer578 so phrygian dominant, harmonic minor and phrygian major are all the same? thx for clearing that up then.
@molomono just a little theory lesson: phrygian isnt a scale, it's a mode of the ionian system (also known as "church scales") there is no such thing as phrygian major. all 8 modes contain the same 8 notes, and it all depends on where you root it if it's major or minor. and jason becker did. sadly not anymore though.

i love that sound.... that gutiar kick ass
@ottozing how much was it? im really thinkin of buyin it cuz it might be much cheaper than buyin amps that later on u dont like anymore lol
@hahawzz don't worry about the size of the neck. it's extremely comfortable. i was worried about it even after i bought it, but after playing it for 10 minutes i knew it was the best guitar i've ever played.

That guitar is gorgeous, can anyone tell me what model his using?
whats the song in the intro ?? is it the same song as he's showing here?
great lesson
sweet tone and playing
Met him at Best Buy guitar place! lol. back then i didn't even know who he was! And like had a conversation me and shit. i didn't even know!!!! he plays for me and i play infront of him. he gives me tips and compliments. he said play to play what u love, and never give up. and also to play scales, cause i played sloppy back then
what song is in the beginning?
you rock jeff
@MrMethadrine Well it IS for a magazine. I doubt these featured artists use their actual rigs for these columns.
whats the name of the song in the intro of this video ? please?
@allfu93 yeah i have the axe fx ultra. best innovation since the guitar pickup
Jeff Loomis is even more awesome when you can hear him play at full speed, but can just see him with computer lag
Such a killer guitar
the necklace he is wearing gives him his ability to write and play dark/evil sounding riffs.
what's the name of the song in the begining?
@givemeajackson The Phrygian scale i'm talking about is the same scale as the Harmonic minor 5th position.

2:37 is the best riff iv heard in atleast forever
Can anyone tell me what model his using?
@A7XfoREVer578 but dominant is harmonic minor?
those riffs....O M G
@allfu93 i got it for 3 thousand. but its probably cheper now. also its v10
@A7XfoREVer578 No phrygian dominant is phrygian with a major 3rd, Harmonic minor is a minor scale with a major 7th. They are relative though, D phrygian dominant is G harmonic minor.
@GuitardedMark whats wrong with his tone?
I'm playing with him in april :)
Jeff has tons of emotion. Who the fuck was saying that he didn't????
@givemeajackson From all i can see Phrygian Major is the same as the dominant because in the harmonic minor scales it is the 5th and that is the dominant.
It supposably has "a distinctive augmented second interval" but whatever, when i play it it's not aeolian that's for sure.
@hahawzz DO IT, you WON'T regret it! I own it and its the best guitar I've ever played!
Wow that guitar looks even sexier in black!
@MrMethadrine lololol thats one of the funniest things ive heard in a while
this is a genius riff and its just a lesson
this is why i want to change from bass to guitar
Awesome
Where can I buy Jeff's guitar tone? I assume it's just a $50 pedal or something he uses. Yes I am kidding - killer bone crushing muted tone.
love it
cool phrygian sound man!
@AwesomeGuitarVideos yes...look up theres a very good guitar pro tab of it
@molomono i dunno how you call it, i know it as the ionian system. and when you augment the second it becomes nothing but aeolian, nothing major phrygian! and theory reaches waaaaaaaay further than scales, you're right on that one. modes are just different positions of one and the same scale, exactly like in pentatonic.
@squirlybmx learn klingon then, it helps your playing alot! if you dont find it when searching "klingon", try "music theory".
@ottozing ive only seen emgs as seven string pickups

@MrPatrickFallon
Wow man,that was deep.
0:22-0:34
i shit my self when i herd that riff
either you like it or you dont, simple
No i meant phrygian dominant and phrygian major are the same i think.
I think you mean to use "subjective" in the first sentence rather than "objective". Other than that, yes I agree lol
ok. so this shows me how to play 1/100000000th of what he does...super
@iJafa schecter jeff loomis signature series. only schecter i like and really the only maple fretboard i like. only guitar i like EMG's on too haha
@superjokerrr thats the song he's playing here. sorry for the 7 month old reply lol
jeff lomies got it right he plays killer solos, but also fucking amazing riffs
what I find sometimes are guitar players who play somewhat mediocre riffs that are kinda forgettable and on the solos they start wanking their guitars like there's no tomorrow, but the riffs of jeff really stick out and his solos too
note that the pentagram on his neck symbolizes the harmony of the five elements of nature and not satan
Jeff Loomis has several signature guitars. Manufacturer should be Schecter.
This is the kind of stuff I play when I'm high... just not as fast.... hahaa
Nice pentagram necklace
Yeah I know lol I noticed right after I posted that haha.
Just imagine i put "subjective" haha.
@molomono I'm pretty sure I just read Klingon.
@appacana Jeff Loomis Signature Model of Awesome Win-ticity :)
3:08 That would be 5th fret, 5th string Mr. Loomis
taht kind of creativity comes for the herb =)
@AwesomeGuitarVideos I got the tabs from a special edition of the CD :)
All of his songs have feeling. fast or not. not all of his tracks are fast either. ever hear "Precognition"? It's on youtube
why dont you check it out. and tell me there is no feeling.
..loomis is the fuckin man!!!!
@indicasativafusion arpeggios??lol
@TheBlackDahlia815 True that man!!
kinda sick.. he does that with ease.. the string skipping at that speed is hard..
@eddie2812
I'll be sure to. :3
@Gu1tari5t then try to play it. if you think that is basic shit it shouldnt be any problem for you... even if you dont like the music, you have to admit that his technical skill is impressive! and jeff is a very versatile player too.
Jeff Loomis finds it harder to play his rhythms at a human pace.
his lessons would have the same success if he tries to teach dogs eating with cutlery instead of teaching his song xD
@MrPatrickFallon haha, nice..
Obsidian Conspiracy? Is there something amiss with the world's volcanic glass?
The riff reminds me of Willy Adler`s, from Lamb of god. Kinda.
@prims777 listen to his solo album and then think about your opinion
@BUFFW The Termination Proclamation- Nevermore, how are u watching this and u dont know?
@steelweasel666 ...buy one? >.>
Tabs...?
@sebastianDEATHcorpse fuck yeah man
It's actually disturbing to watch how Loomis pulls up string-skipping at that speed with no hassle at all. This being said, I still think that he has to change his hair style :P
he has gold hair
i like the black loomis 7 more than the vampire red one
