- Jeff Loomis returns to Guitar World with a whole new series of lessons for his column The Merchant of Menace!!!
In this lesson Jeff shows you how to play the first part of the solo of new Nevermore hit "Obsidian Conspiracy."
His amazing technique is something every guitarist should aspire to, weather they play blue, metalcore, jazz, or whatever. That dude plays fucking CLEAN
Love jeff Loomis. He is my all time favorite. He can't be beat
Wow, I'm surprised Jeff says he improvises a lot in the studio. All his solos seem so well composed. Just goes to show what a monster musician he is.
Propbably explains why he plays passages slightly different from the studio take in lesson videos so often. I started to think he did it on purpose lol
I can do this in my sleep. But only in my sleep. This dude is wicked!!
fuck man gotta love how he gets cleaner as he gets faster
you can express some feelings through playing blues or ballads, but you can also express anger and evilness through this kind of song. So the discussion about feeling is pointless. as long as you play it right and honestly there is always a feeling being expressed. This guy is awesome
Anyone attempting the diminished string skipping part, don't do it. You'll stretch your hand too much and turn it into a flattened pancake or something. That technique fucks up your hand and it's only something Jeff can do. I don't know how he does it but he just does.
His hand looks like a "rake" during the last solo shapes.
JL is insanely talented. I could listen to him play all day.
4:11 impossible task for me
@Lentax If I'm not mistaken he's tuned down a half step so its Bb standard.
it sounds the same? every player has there favourite musical qualitys.
Loomis likes Diminished and whole tone licks, and mixes them up frequently. He also likes going up in Minor thirds for alot of his riffs like the verse riff in "Born"
Jeff Loomis, why? Why do you make things so difficult? Why?
But do you know, that old Jeff was so smart and so slick, he thought up a lie and he thought it up quick. :P
@Ningirsutyr I know that he probably never even heard a not from a Middle Eastern track, but nevertheless it sounds familiar to the Oud or Qanoon.
But Randy Rhoads for example played the entire solo in "Diary Of A Madman" in the Algerian Scale, But if you go to something like Maiden, It's sometimes the Augmented 5th
that stretch at 4:15 is just no for me, at least on an extended scale guitar(Loomis sig). Curse my average sized hands.
Dude its ok i knw u r gd player too jus wrk it out slwly n u wil get it
@R1ronin Well, about Gilbert, he just has a really long pinky, and Brendan can stretch too.
Look for Technical Difficulties (He plays a red Ibanez with a fixed bridge, so you can recognize the vid"
And for Small, watch his "Betcha Can't Play This"
Every time i see his hands im surprised..Jeff is the person on Earth who have exactly the same hands and fingers with me, both in length and shape...our hands are brothers hahaha
You can tap the notes of the stretch parts if its difficult
Awesome! , more Jeff Loomis videos Plz
amazing violinist!!!!!!!
This guy really knows how to incorporate Middle Eastern flavors into his playing
that is a beautiful guitar
Killer Tone!
@guitarfiend797 yeah, Jeff Loomis signature model
he has scary big hands
saw him in person at NAMM. can confirm, large hands
lovely, i love u jeff!!!
jeff loomis is living prove of god
listen to Bach's Mass in B Minor ..
It is also the intro to SX "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" ..
@Niallphillips
it all sounds awesome
freeze at 4:28....he has the demon hand!!!!
JEFF?????? How come you had to quit Nevermore????? Hope the solo record sounds good. Dont leave your fans behind!!!!
very good.
I love that guitar *-*
@Ningirsutyr I'm not sure. that's at least what Guitar Pro 5 scale finder told me.
1.37 the smile on his face = PRICELESS (yeah i nailed that solo ROFL!)
Sounds like he's playing the gypsy scale, one of my favorite scales.
This guy is heavier than a rain of axes! once you have enden to listen his solo album your personality changes (into heavier of course)
@Niallphillips Thats a fair point but this is a piece of music, not mindless fretwanking.
@Lentax probably b flat standard
Bb,eb,ab,db,gb,bb,eb-low to high
That rhythm riff sounds rhythmically similar to the beautiful people
I accidentally skipped to the slow intro where he is doing the chugs slowly, WHAT AN INTRO any ways, try listening and accenting the intro SLOWLY, its brutal as F. here look 0:56
@sonicgeetar to blow a whole through your point..Milli vanilli Toured....so shows what that logic means
EVH FTW.
@Navarre1994 He IS highly influenced by Friedman, and Jason Becker
@25jonathan
Well said, but it's not exactly phrygian :p
It's Phrygian Dominant, which is a mode of harmonic minor.
@EnemyXofXreality666 Shawn Lane used to do it as well
@jpjdo1212 No, a trait is like a part of your personality.
And I thought the stretch on Andy James' "Diary of Hell's Guitar" was big.
@MrNeosantana :O I didn't know that about Diary of a Madman! What is exactly the Algerian scale actually? :/ In any case, it's hard to translate a real Middle Eastern melody to the standard Western notation system since there is no substitution for the 2nd minors between two notes ;)
@BaphometStudios i use 1.5 and its perfect for me
@Lentax lol sorry bro, knew you were joking about the Z but i thought you really wanted to know lol
@hellion786 He does have big hands
This is absolutely Arabic mode called ( Hijazi - Phrygien dominant ) 😀
@R1ronin I'm just saying "If this is wide stretching for you, then you'd be scared if you saw X"
I'm not insulting you in any way, dude
@Nameless164 guthrie govan is master of all styles...
@mortemdrummer and still the sexiest man alive as long as he has a guitar in his hands...
@Rrrrobbo A dimished string skip lick like this is painful even on frets above 12
Those notes aren't there when I play.
Maybe your guitar didn't come with them. He has the platinum model
😆
nice
@YggdrasilEtLeCruxis i have a six string you can still play 90% of the solo you know
he is a long-haired guitar playing vampire!
What's the song in the beginning?
Jeff Loomis eats haters for breakfast.
@Nameless164 isnt it " a jack of all traits, is a master of nothing"
como se llama la cancion??
Just a heads up for those trying to learn this. The solo rhythm is significantly different on the actual record than he shows in this video. It's more like this:
|------------------------|--------------------5|----------------------|------------------------|
|4444_5444447|5444_544443|5444_544442|5444_53333_5|
|2222_3222225|3222_32222--|3222_322220|3222_31111_3|
Thanks! I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get it, so this hopefully will help.
@Thardus616 cool
so smoth could be on a starbucks menu
@grievous56 I found out, right after reading your comment.
4:06 i was like, what happened to his pinky?! Where is it? Than i realised that he was using his pinky.
@HuberttXXX17 Alright, and theres no need to apologize as you did nothing wrong, I was just asking for a reference :).
Further note, I still disagree...
@R1ronin You've obviously never watched Brendan Small or Paul Gilbert play, then you'd be scared
pikinge paling keren ....
what model schecter is that. it looks sick nasty. must be a signiture model
That stretching lick must have been Shawn Lane inspired.
@nght5tlkr w8 for the video its still processing
The intro riff... is that from a song? If so whats it called plz?
Termination Proclamation, Nevermore. Your long wait for an answer is at an end! :D
0:47 ''for this next bitch...''
hands of a giant
@MrNeosantana What many call Middle Eastern flavor since Blackmore brought them on the spotlight is nothing but a Phrygian scale most of the time. It would be foolish to think that all these guys listened to any Middle Eastern music or melody during their lives ;-/ I wonder how he came up with that big stretch idea though ;) Nobody in his right mind would say "Yeah, let's just try that" :)
Ugh, people suggesting he plays in a screamo band... No.! death metal, sure, melodic, ect. Anything except for the genre of "screamo" Keep in mind just because they scream doesn't make it screamo.
@gdbangrenbehemoth666 Lucky you! My hands are rather small so its almost impossible for me
@Niallphillips lulz.
1:50 basically he's saying "because i'm jeff fucking loomis and i'm better than you"
that busts my organs ... *_____________*
"everything he does sounds the same"
Let me reveal a very true phrase to you guys - "jack of all trades, master of none".
I'd much rather have Jeff make 1 awesome style of music than a bunch of medicore styles.
Sorry it took 9 years to reply... But.. FUCK YEAH 🤘
1:38 he's smiling because he knew that nobody can easily play that
@IloveRillettes
i know brutal
6:25 Impossible....
@EnemyXofXreality666 if you can't strecth just learn tapping and you're done
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is this regular tuning?
@brendanollie ...down a half step
The moment he said phrygian dominant I came, that's probably my favorite scale. Sounds edgy as fuck though.
@genud0414 i think it was a joke....
I got arthritis jus watching this😬😑🤨
@ThexXURIELXx Half-step down on a seven-string, A# D# G# C# F# A# D#
4:08 ARE YOU SHITTIN ME?
i miss the hair string mute
@ursolame666 Screamo and death metal are too different things.
@nght5tlkr works for me
@EnemyXofXreality666 Hahahahahaha... what ?
