If you're looking to upgrade your RV entry steps, two of the most popular offerings on the market today are the Lippert Solid Step and the MORryde StepAbove step, which is actually what came installed on our rig from the factory.
At first glance you're not going to notice much difference between the two. They're both going to give you increased weight capacity and increased stability. They're both constructed from lightweight high-quality aluminum. They're both stowed inside on travel days so they're exposed to the elements a lot less. And they both have adjustable independent legs that work great on uneven terrain.
The #1 difference between these two models is going to be the step width and step depth. The 2nd difference is weight capacity. The 3rd difference is the ease of leg adjustment. 4th is the way in which the steps and the assist features are marketed and packaged. 5th is the way in which the steps are mounted to the rig. And the 6th difference is the performance of the assist features.
At the end of the day, after having both units installed and using them for some time, I'd say the Lippert Solid Step is the winner.
The wider and deeper steps are the main reason for the win, but the ease of foot adjustment is a huge bonus. And while I definitely prefer the smaller footprint and smoother operation of MORryde's strut assist feature over Lippert's lift assist, it's not a big enough deal to take the win.
So if I had the old, traditional-style step and I was looking to upgrade I would definitely choose the Lippert Solid Step.

Great review!!! I'm a little on the accident prone side. So I spent a lot of time trying these out at 2 rv shows. The wider top step and the solid back at the top step just gave me so much more confidence going up and down. Our next rig will have the Lippert Solid Step.

Great video. Those are the 2 best options for steps stored inside, but for me I'll be going with Torklift Revolution. Same great features and stability, but no potential dirty steps in the trailer.
Nice. Yeah, I just checked those out. They look pretty cool. Wouldn’t work on our front door though, at least without a major modification, because we don’t have a cutout section available. They could definitely be an option for the back door though. But since we rarely use the back door, we swapped out our back steps for the Solid Step Storage Box which is working pretty good for our setup at the moment. Nice to know there’s another exterior step option to consider if we ever decided to switch things up down the road! Thanks for checking out the video! 🙏

Great job on the video. As it happens I have been looking at a step upgrade. Looks like Lippert is the winner. The only problem I have is in my older Montana there is a step well at the inside of the door. Not sure of how that will effect installation and operation.

The latest morryde steps have squeeze triggers to release the feet. You set the steps where you want them, squeeze, then the legs drop into place. Very quick and easy in most cases. Our 21' flagstaff has them. So they whip the lipperts.
Nice! Yeah, I believe the new Lippert version has some sort of push button adjustment as well. I’d love to do a Lippert vs MORryde Part 2 if I can get my hands on both versions of the new steps!

I like the idea of the wider top step from lippert but I've seen the steel mount and back plate rusting on new just delivered trailers.
Yes, ideally there would be less steel and more aluminum, not only minimizing any rust issues but also reducing the overall weight.

Great video. There is only one issue with bit if misinformation. The lipert solid step width depends on the width of the door in your rig. All steps are not 24" wide. This is specific to your door frame there are 2 or 3 different widths in the 2,3 and 4 step units.
Hey there David! I understand exactly where you’re coming from and yes, after doing some further research, it does appear that for some reason Grand Design used the 19.5” step (meant for 24” doors) instead of the 24” step (meant for 30” doors) on our 30” door! Why they would use the narrower step on a larger unit is beyond me! I just looked up the part number that should have been installed on my rig and it doesn’t match what we have. Looks like there may have been a mixup at the factory and I’m just now discovering this because of comments like yours! Thank you!
At the time of making this video, I was under the impression that I was comparing the two correlating versions of the Lippert and MORryde system both meant for my specific door size of 30” wide. But instead I’ve now discovered the wrong part was installed from the factory. Ouch. I’ll be giving Grand Design a call to see if they have any further input on this.
So to clarify for anyone reading this comment, everything in the video still applies EXCEPT for the width. Looks like the correct comparison would be only about a 0.5” advantage in width for Lippert vs MORryde.

Nice Job in comparison. I'm replacing my MORryde also with Lippert. My reason is manufacturer only put 3 steps in my rig when 4 steps should have been installed based upon 35" height of my door threshold.
Thanks man! Yeah, I had a similar situation. Grand Design installed the 19.5” wide MORryde steps in our unit from the factory, which should have been 24” wide based on our door width. Their official position when I contacted them about it is, “it helps cut costs...” 🤷♂️

@@AroundTheSunWeGo wider and deeper stepping. We weigh less than 200 and we are young so not worried about capacity or minor shock issue you mentioned. Would still keep the MORryde and replace the folding steps in the toy hauler room with it. Safety first.

Hey Mark. That’s a good question and I didn’t think to grab those measurements on the MorRyde before I did the swap. But I just measured the Solid Step and it “sticks in” about 11” from the wall. Also, at the very bottom, the Lift Assist strut “sticks in” a little more at just under 14”.
Our Keystone travel trailer came with the Lippert Solid Steps installed. I love the steps but the pins used for adjusting the height are hard to work since my hand strength is not the best. Do you or any other viewers have a better solution for these pins? I've tried finding different pins for this but I can only find the same clevis pin that I'm trying to replace. Any ideas?
Hey Nicole. I’ve thought about changing the original pins out for quick release cotterless pins with a ring on them to grab and hold on to but I haven’t actually taken the time to try finding a replacement. If I do, I’ll try Lowe’s or Home Depot first to see if I have any luck finding the right size.
Currently we have the MORryde Step we like it but rather have the "Solid Step" basically one reason. The upper edge of the step gives you more clearance for the door to close when the ground is to elevated and you have to find a way to close the door. Which has presented itself on more then one occassion with our MORryde steps. We take delivery of our new trailer end of month but comes with large Aluminum Fold Outs; eventaully will replace with Solid Step.
I didn’t pay any attention to the door clearance differences when I swapped out our steps but good to know! Thanks for sharing Jesse.
Very good and informative video Chris. My Grand Design Solitude 5th wheel came with the MORyde steps. I was pretty excited as all my previous RV’s had the folding type. This is an awesome upgrade and great concept. I’ve had a problem though with these steps, which leads me to a question for you as you’ve now experienced both the MORyde and Lippert steps. I have to store my 5th wheel at an RV storage place during the winter and the space between the rigs is quite limited. Unless the guy beside me leaves me enough room, I can’t lower the steps as they will fall down against the side wall of his trailer, which means I can’t get inside my rig. Do you know if the overall length or height (whichever way you look at it) is the same for the MORyde and Lippert steps? I hope you understand what I mean by that specific measurement. Thanks.
Hey Mike! I did measure our 4-step Lippert model and it looks like we’d need a minimum of 50” of clearance between our rig and the next in order to deploy the steps. I’d assume the 3-step and 2-step models would require less. For reference, we’d need about 33” between rigs for us to fully open the door. Unfortunately I do not have the measurements for the MORryde step as they’re currently in storage. But hopefully this helps a little!

Hey Douglas! Do you mean lowering them from the inside after the lift assist is installed? If so, that shouldn’t be very hard at all. You could simply push them outward, the strut will catch the weight, and then just push them the rest of the way down with barely any effort. Bringing them up from inside would be a little harder as you need some decent leverage to get it started. But once you’re up a few degrees the strut will kick in and it’d be easy at that point.

Glad you found the video helpful! As for the Starship model, it’s sort of a hybrid of two things I put together. The ship is actually a 3D printed salt and pepper shaker set my wife bought me on Etsy. I glued it together permanently and then mounted it onto a 3D printed smoke cloud I had from a previous Saturn V rocket lamp. Haha. You can search “Starship SNP” on Etsy and the seller is “ExtrudedRarities”. And then search “Saturn V Rocket Lamp” if you want the exact smoke cloud.
In either case, if you have a limited storage situation that does not allow for a few feel of side clearance you will not be able to get into your trailer because the stair will not be able to rotate out and down to the ground. Side clearance needs to be at least as wide as the stringer length is, + a few inches.

Hey Juan! Great question. So Lippert’s Lift Assist kit will NOT work with MORryde’s step. If you wanted an assist feature with a StepAbove step, you’d need to upgrade to the MORyde StepAbove WITH Strut Assist.

I wish these manufactures would adhere to the ADA standards in all step designs.
On the non strut side, how did you remove that box? The screw/bolts on our side aren't actual screws, they look like rivets.
Hey Julie! 1. Are you removing a set of MORryde steps from your RV? 2. When you mention box, are you referring to the rectangle mounting plate that is secured with 4 screws in my video? 3. If everything looks the same, but yours is secured with rivets rather than screws, I’d think you could possibly drill them out with a bit that is a size or two smaller than the rivet?
Can you get something like this for class a rv ?
These are more suitable for a trailer.
Can the be used on a motorhome? My parents are getting older and need this upgrade.

Do the lippert steps give any increased stability for the camper itself?
For our 43ft, 20k lb rig, I’d say no, not at all. I suppose it may provide some additional stabilization for a much smaller camper but I have no experience there. Good thought though 🤔

Not sure if you realize this but moryde offers a 24” wide step above with lift assist, I just think that Grand design used the 19.5” steps in their place.
And their new style step eliminates the need for that pin, it’s self adjusting
Hey man! I did not realize that. Looking on their website, all I see is the step that looks exactly like our old ones (narrow with the old pin). Are you able to purchase the 24” step from them directly? Or do they only come installed on new rigs?
@@AroundTheSunWeGo let me clarify a couple of things, I got the 4 step above with lift assist over a year ago so it’s the wider one but not with their latest self adjusting legs, let me see if I can find the part number for that, as far as the self adjusting legs being installed on the wider step above I have to see if they have that available since those self adjusting is fairly new. @@AroundTheSunWeGo ok so it’s the step for the 30” door. Part numbers is STP-4-30-09H, I would contact morryde to make sure it comes with the self adjusting but from what I’ve seen it does already
You were exactly right! I called Grand Design and asked them why they installed the narrow 19.5” MORryde steps (meant for 24” doors) on our larger 30” door (which should have had 24” steps). Their official position was that it helps them cut costs. Their specific reasoning was they have a few models (with 30” doors) that have clearance issues with the 24” steps when folding them into the door, so instead of stocking both 19.5” steps (for those specific units) and 24” steps (for the ones without clearance issues), they only stock 19.5” ones and put them on all units, regardless of whether a 24” wide step would work or not.
So for anyone reading this comment, everything in the video still applies EXCEPT for the width. Looks like the correct comparison would be only about a 0.5” advantage in width for Lippert vs MORryde. Also, please note this video only compares the two models available on the market at the time of filming. There are apparently new models out now and looks like a Lippert vs MORryde 2.0 video may need to be produced soon!
How much does the moride weigh? Not capacity but the steps themselves. You said the lippert package as you got it weighed 165 lbs.
Hey Jonathan. Having carried both, I’d say they are of pretty similar weight. I don’t have an exact weight for the MORryde though.
Did you have any issues with your door closing because of the transportation latch on the Lippert? If so what was your solution.

@@AroundTheSunWeGo Yes, I’ve moved the transport latch to the top bracket and the bottom bracket. Door will not close. Considering taking off screen door.
@@darrenwarren1730 The transport latch should be completely beyond (inside) the threshold of your door once the steps are folded up. Does your latch completely clear the door threshold?

The MORyde people must have watched your video because they have modified the leg adjustment mechanism on their product. You just squeeze a lever and the steps drop to where you need them and you let go the lever to lock them. You can also remove them by pulling the inside hinge pins.
I meant the adjustable legs drop when squeezing the lever.

Yes, the MORryde steps are definitely a well made product and held up great throughout our months of using them!
We have the step above and it dents the rv ,, what do you suggest?
Where is it denting it? And what type of RV do you have?
@@AroundTheSunWeGo we have a grand design 2250 RK and we have two doors. The back door is the step above unit and when you bring it down it pushes into the side of the camper. I would like to send a photo if I can figure out how to do it.

Lippert , why dont you build that step with a 14 inch floor height platform and then steps that will fold up ? The steps dont have to fold up into the door . They can connect to the threshold and with rollers on the step can unhook and simply roll into the RV and close the door.a hand rail can also be attached .
OLd people like camping and those steps can be dangerous . Im one of those old people that really needs a floor level platform. To take a step fown right out of the door is at best unsettling .

Hey Bud! The 30” step is SKU: 791575 and the Wide Lift Assist Kit is SKU: 733939
I want to upgrade my steps, but you don't mention here is distance from the side of the vehicle when it is parked. In the lot where my rig is stored, there is not a lot of room between rigs. With my stock steps, I can open the door and climb in without deploying steps, looks like with these if there is a building or another rig parked close, my only door is now blocked by undeployed steps.
Hey there Alan. I just measured our 4-step model and it looks like we’d need a minimum of 50” of clearance between our rig and the next in order to deploy the steps. I’d assume the 3-step and 2-step models would require less. For reference, we’d need about 33” to fully open the door. Hope that helps!
If i couldn't deploy my steps because there's another rv that close, I'd be moving asap..
@@jredd801 Due to hoa rules at my house there is barely 40" on each side of my rv. Unless I want to pay $145 a month for offsite parking. Which BTW, also packs them in tight. $200 a month for covered with electric and room around the rv.
Will these work on truck campers?
I haven’t personally noticed any truck campers with either one of these installed but it is a great question. I’ll look into it!
Hey there. So after doing some digging, the consensus seems to be that, because truck campers have such a varying distance from bottom of door frame to ground (up to 2-3 feet of difference when the camper is loaded on the truck vs off the truck vs at a campsite), these may not be the best fit. Something more telescopic would be better. Maybe a scissor design like the Torklift Stow N’ Go?

Hey Kris. Good question and definitely something I considered. But we rarely use our back door for going in and out, plus our car takes up a good chunk of space in the garage on travel days so I wanted to leave that area as open as possible. And then dropping a little weight was also a bonus.

Hey Terry. It really depends on the model and brand. Prices range from the mid $200s for the smallest units up to $500+ for the biggest with the most features.
The new Moryde adjustment is hands down better than the step above, its not a pin style anymore. I've had both will respectfully disagree with you.
Hey there Keith! Yeah, I’ve been hearing from multiple people that both Lippert & MORryde have now abandoned the pin style leg adjustment and updated to a button style that’s much easier. Not sure if both of the updated models are available to purchase in the aftermarket yet (maybe only available on new rigs from the factory) but I’d imagine they would be soon.
