A person has not lived life to its fullest until he has gotten Portuguese Man-O-War tentacles wrapped around him. An experience that you will never forget; 60 years in my case.
I had my last stung about 40 years ago, I think it is memories I could do without. It's truly excruciating, my mom used to wash it with vinegar too but only when we got home, they always acted like it was no big deal and that we all go through it. I once saw a woman step into a pool between rocks right into the middle of a few of them, they wrapped right around her ankle, I really felt sorry for her. In South Africa we call it Blue Bottles.
My father was in the military and he always told me when they open beaches do not go, wait 1 month and a week, because as soon as they open, there are fish there that came to the edge during winter, wait until they go back to the sea and you have a month to swim, after a month do not go to the beach because they come back to shore.
I snorkeled the reefs off the lower keys for years and many times when the man o wars were thick their tentacles would break up into small fragments over the coral. Swimming through these Portuguese smithereens was extremely uncomfortable and would leave welts all over your body and if these fragments got into your bathing suit it was painful to say the least.
Buddy of mine had one of these sting him basically he walked into the tenalces in the Cayman Islands. He was in the hospital for over a month. Some of the worst pain he's ever experienced. I saw the pictures. It was unbelievable
@@juanrodriguez-ry6yt Yeah, the box is the most venomous animal on earth. In my opinion, the deaths from these worldwide is vastly underreported. Bad for tourism.
yeah right! a couple months ago we had public service announcements to tell parents not to let their kids dig tunnels in the snow next to roads because of snow plows, do you really think parents are going to warn kids about this?😂
The Man o' War look like pretty colorful balloons, so, yeah, a child would be attracted to them. Seen one on a beach in the Dominican Republic and they're beautiful. Glad I didn't touch it!😯
I'm from north of the border. In 1970 I was there with my parents visiting my uncle. We were out in his boat one day and I jumped in for a swim. While I was in the water my uncle yelled man o' war so I started looking for a ship, he quickly told me to get out of the water. He showed me what he was yelling about explained to me how the man o' war could ruin my vacation.
In South Africa we call it "Blue Bottles", been stung a few times and it is really painful. One left a scar on my arm as a child and it took years to disappear. Fortunately I never had an allergic reaction to it because it is known that people died after being stung.
I was stung by one across my chest surfing when I was 18 years old in 1980 and I still have some visible scars, yes it is extremely painful , kicked out of a wave and when I popped up and turned to get my board here it came stretched across the white water of the wave behind me
Grew up in Melbourne. They're seasonal, and swim by at certain times. They close the beaches when they come through, but there are always some stragglers. Saw a guy get tangled in them once....he was writhing in pain, and they were literally poring bottles of rubbing alcohol on his huge welts going around his chest .....ouch.
"Just don't go by them" but they're tentacles reach 100 ft.. FYI stay off even the beaches lol them tentacles are really small and probably hard to see , unless they shrivel up outside of the water 🤔
I got stung as a kid in India. The poison crept up my leg for hours. My dad got stung by two of them. They were babies along the beach, mass landing. We were both in separate beds in the same room, moaning in pain for the whole day. Worst pain ever! it felt like a snake bite venom. Thank god I am still here! Blue bottles are the baby versions of Man o' War. Blue bottles have an air filled sac or swim bladder and a long tail which stings.
I was stung by one of these beautiful creatures many years ago. It stung me all over my back, legs and two stings around my eye. Can't explain the burning pain. Pretty to look at but keep your distance.
For the Australian’s the Portuguese Man O War and the Blue Bottles Are Not The Same! The Man O war is larger and far more venous which means excruciating pain.
they are the same species, Physalia physalis. Many ppl from australia have been providing some evidence argueing that the blue bottle is a different species however the scientific consensus is that theres only one species.
I watched a show about Australia the Portuguese man o war they called them bluebottles and the sting you and they say it hurts up to an hour they say when sting use vinegar and they say you can use pee to try to ease the pain
I got to retire in Boca Raton back in 2013 I was a beach bum for the next four years and moved out when rent skyrocketed. I did notice one thing, Florida wasn't the Sunshine State anymore! The weather pattern has definitely shifted!! More and more I realized it was a good time to leave the beach is just too polluted
The tentacles will stretch out 30 to 40 ft long I'm just glad I didn't get stung only reason why is because I think I helped it back to the water when it was dying on the beach shore in Destin
These arr what we call Bluebottles in Australia. They are no stranger to our shores and under certain conditions ie a southerly you can guarantee we'll get Bluebottles. We grow up knowing not to touch them. If you see one you call it. Let other swimmers know they're there. If you see them on the beach you cover them with a small mound of sand as a flag to other beach goers.

I bet I'm not the only one who wants to pop it by stomping on it.....Right ? And what is it inflated with. Air, explosive gas, Nitrous oxide ? Inquiring minds need to know.
Feels like being whipped with a hot acid, electrified wire. Amazing if you are into pain. I guarantee you this: EVERYONE comes up hollering the first time they get stung. Almost everyone reflexively pulls the snorkel from their mouth (in order to scream fully). Panic is when you scream through your snorkel. Reflections of an open water swimmer, born and raised in Florida.
Hahaha! Ah, Blue Bottles! We get these often on our beaches in South Africa. When we get stung by one we exit the water, piss on the sting and go right back to swimming. I'm laughing that this actually made the news somewhere in the world. 😂
