Yeah it literally cannot be cheating; all he did was watch the show (A LOT) but that's exactly what the producers wanted people to do right? Someone was bound to notice the flaw eventually. Either way his karma was bad, he basically lost it all as easily as he got it. Poetic really.
Even though he memorized the pattern of the board, he still had to get himself on the show. It’s amazing he even made it on the show. All things lined up.
I first watch this last year and then a few times that same week Larson's story is not just a cult legend but one of motivation and inspiration. After working hard during the day, he wasn't just studying but working on himself instead of just coming home and surfing the tv on his couch. We can all take motivation from his story and apply it all to our lives on the hours and days we aren't working. It was sad he didn't apply the same thing he did to get that money to save his cash strategetic.
He'd have raised a lot less suspicion if he had stopped at 30k and passed his remaining spins. He'd probably have a few more spins passed back and handle those accordingly, then pass the earned spins again when he can. That way he can return as champion the next day to do it all over again, and not raise as many questions of how he did it.
If he were playing after the limit was raised to $50K, that might have worked-- however, I believe that his broadcasts came while the show still had the $25K limit, so he would have been retired if he won.
I read this story years ago, it's a pretty cool story barring the fact that Larson did some questionable things like leaving a shit ton of money in his house which ultimately got stolen and was involved in some pyramid scheme before his death in 1999. Did Carson cheat? I would say no. He just exploited a weakness of how spaces were determined on Press Your Luck during the 80s, something that was since then modified to make it much harder (If not impossible) to replicate.
They turned off the comments on the documentary and made the guy out to be a psycho. When in all reality they turned off the comments because the guy is a genius and the talk shows deserved every bit of it
I've known about this man for a long time. This man wasn't a cheater, he was a genius! It takes a lot to study the patterns, developing quick reflexes in order to "STOP" at the perfect time, and it takes a bit of luck to not have either of the other contestants just so happen to pass you up in cash though that's admittedly unlikely to happen if you're that smart! The sole reason they accused him of cheating is because they didn't want to pay him what they owed him! I'm angry that Press Your Luck got away with redesigning the game entirely because they're so damn selfish!
This guy did nothing wrong!!! He just beat the network at their own game. And, as usual he went the stupid way as most people do when they get money. WHY, didn’t he put the money in the bank?!?!
Most of the people that lose their money like Larson did, never had a significant amount of money prior to their winnings. They just don't know how to manage money. It's why some athletes end up broke a few years after they retire.
@@66limelight That's right-- they spend the money before they actually have it (even the late, great CBS NFL Today co-host Irv Cross wrote about this in his autobiography Bearing the Cross [that, once a player sees the bucks, they automatically start thinking expensive cars and big mansions, instead of socking that money away for worthwhile things like an education that will have them ahead in the long run]).
Something fishy about how his house just happened to be broken into the one time he took his money out of the bank. Granted, he was brick-stupid for doing that in the first place, but still though.....
He lost everything is an understatement! He got all his money from CBS but stupidly spent it with the idea of it would never run out! His 1st wife divorced him after his gambling addiction.
I do think its important to point out that Michael didn't initially quit on $110k. He tried to quit on $102k. But then after Ed whammied out, and then Janie hit one whammy and took I think it was 4 spins, she passed her remaining 3 to Michael to try to force him to Whammy out. Which he damn near did on his final spin. Landing on the very square that he whammied on on his very first spin.
I don't call this cheating because I take great love in the lessons of the Book of Five Rings. He uses strategy and understands his opponent and shows that he is prepared.
After watching the modern edition of the game show today, I can easily tell that this game show is quite easy if you play it smart. It's all in the timing man
Michael Larson was James Holzhauer before there was James Holzhauer. Michael Larson and James Holzhauer have something in common. That’s appearing on a TV game show and win big.
It's not cheating since he learned the patterns himself; it's CBS's fault for making it too easy to exploit. It would have been cheating if he hypothetically had an inside connection at CBS who informed him of what the patterns where so that they could be exploited.
Mike is a damn genius and his brother, the show exces, and so many others were just jealous because Mike was highly intelligent. Micheal cracked the code, he did NOT cheat.
I watched a different video from a creator (Ray William Johnson) who I thought was credible and that video concluded that after he won the game show winnings that he left the USA to never be heard of again. Like wtf lol
What the fuck, you dont know shit about gameshows my guy, he didn't "cheat", if you would've LISTENED carefully to the documentary, he cracked the code, he beat the system, he STUDIED the patterns, get your research or titles right sir...
Its amazing how all these people "Had a feeling he was up to something and didn't want him on the show" but some other guy let him on the show...Dont you love that? Someone claims they had a bad feeling after the shits already happened 😂😂🤣🤣
He didn’t lose. He scammed people out of around 4 million and was never caught. He did die somewhat young, but he had more talent than people who do TH-cam videos
I don't like the title being SCANDAL. It makes it seem like Larsen did wrong which he didn't Heaven forbid the big boys of the world get shown up by the little people
That's like saying that the people who cracked the code and pattern of the lottery with quantum physics cheated, when it was just an educational guess.
Primitive computer with a primitive randomizer. This would never happen today. There are algorithms so that you won't see a matching pattern for millennia. But, taking advantage of a slow, crappy 1980s computer isn't cheating.
Studying the show, learning the patterns. Is in no way cheating. Games shows just say it is. Because they want the advantage.
Yeah it literally cannot be cheating; all he did was watch the show (A LOT) but that's exactly what the producers wanted people to do right? Someone was bound to notice the flaw eventually. Either way his karma was bad, he basically lost it all as easily as he got it. Poetic really.
He should be awarded a bounty of top for discovering the "loophole"
He was my neighbor in Apopka. Always had a creepy vibe
Same as counting cards. Not cheating, but deemed to be by the biggest cheaters in the industry.
Wrong he cheated the other contestants out of a fair chance.
It's not cheating. He won it. Its like learning to count cards giving you the edge. The house never wants to lose
Technically he didn’t cheat, he just beat them at their own game.
Larson was 35 years old when he was on the show.
He looks like he was in his 50s !
and died only 14 years later
I just turned 35 and he looks like he could be my father
@@renaldsunset I'm 51 and he could be my father, never mind you lol
Luke, "I am your father"
Right? I thought he was much much older
Even though he memorized the pattern of the board, he still had to get himself on the show. It’s amazing he even made it on the show. All things lined up.
He didn't cheat. He learned the game and beat the system. Good for him...period
I’m glad they had to pay it out to him. Of course they got all upset and wanted to claim he was a cheater. They were out smarted fair and square!
........."Big Money,NO Whammy's,Big Money,NO Whammy's, Big Money....STOP!!!!!" When I was in elementary school I watched that show every day.
My dad freaking loves this show so much! I’m about to show him this cause he remembers this man. Thanks guys!
I first watch this last year and then a few times that same week

7:50 exactly what he said. there’s literally no rule that says you can’t memorize the patterns
I can just imagine the production flipping their shite!!

This is what cheaters do

Michael Larson was Dr. Evil before the Austin Powers movie debuted on the big screen, with that pose he made 😂
thats no cheating
Tell that to the casinos
Yes, unfortunately it's cheating!
Yeah agreed… he wasn’t cheating, he just was so good he mastered the game! What an awesome guy.
They turned off the comments on the documentary and made the guy out to be a psycho. When in all reality they turned off the comments because the guy is a genius and the talk shows deserved every bit of it

He didn't look 35. More like 55.
He had a lot of gray hair. That made him look older.
@@rodney1279TheFlip ah it's more than just his hair, he died only 14 years later, i feel he had some issues that aged him quicker.
Moral of the story: It wasn't cheatin' when the big board was so predictable

The producer was being a jerk. It's not cheating, he spotted a pattern.
Bobby was the shrewd one not Bill Curuthers

He should have taken Peter Tomarken's advice. Spend it wisely.
35yrs old damn😳
35? More like 65
292k in today's money
I was thinking more like 1.5 million today
imagine being accused of cheating solely because you beat the game🤣
Even the lottery has a pattern
He looked like that at 35!?? Dude looked 50s
The 1980s were a different time man. I guess people at 35 back then looked almost 50 compared to today lol 😅
Michael Larson was James Holzhauer before there was James Holzhauer. Michael Larson and James Holzhauer have something in common. That’s appearing on a TV game show and win big.
And Thom McKee of Tic Tac Dough was Ken Jennings before there was Ken Jennings.
Don't even try to compare this slime to James
Michael Larson would have been an excellent consultant for Michigan football.
HIS FAITH AMAZING
Seems like Press Your Luck treated him like a Card counter at a Casino.
So sad he never knew what to do with his money when he got it.
That means you only have 1 month to memorize patterns, and you have to sign up before the end of the month.
Greed ! It’s always greed ! Why wouldn’t you stop at a comfortable sum ?? Nooo ! You had to go too far and raise suspicions 🤦🏽♂️
That wasn’t greedy… he was winning the game fair and square! Take your victory Larson, you earned it!
@joen8529 no he was not!
35? He doesn't look a day over 60
How did he cheat? He memorized the rhythm of the board. That’s no different than people studying questions asked on quiz shows.
That man deserved that money, and more!
Larson won fair and square. He did his homework and outsmarted CBS. HA Ha
It's not cheating since he learned the patterns himself; it's CBS's fault for making it too easy to exploit. It would have been cheating if he hypothetically had an inside connection at CBS who informed him of what the patterns where so that they could be exploited.

Surprised press your luck didn't have preset maximum the contestants could win.
That guy was 35? I would’ve thought 55. People just look a lot younger these days.
He didn't cheat. He best the game. There's a big difference.
"Was 35 years old"
Me: 👁️👄👁️
HE TRIED TO BE SMART WITH THE MONEY THAT THE GOOD THING IF HE BROUGHT A REIT HE WOULD BEEN OKAY
THEY BASICALLY DIDNT WANT TO PAY HIM; HE PLAYED THE GAME AND WO THERES NO SCANDAL!
He didn't cheat. In their special about him, GSN worked hard to demonize the guy.
I watched a different video from a creator (Ray William Johnson) who I thought was credible and that video concluded that after he won the game show winnings that he left the USA to never be heard of again. Like wtf lol
It's not cheating, it's called memeris the pattern.
It's called learning.
Do you think Michael Larson cheated to win?
Absolutely not....he studied
No
nope
What the fuck, you dont know shit about gameshows my guy, he didn't "cheat", if you would've LISTENED carefully to the documentary, he cracked the code, he beat the system, he STUDIED the patterns, get your research or titles right sir...

Its amazing how all these people "Had a feeling he was up to something and didn't want him on the show" but some other guy let him on the show...Dont you love that? Someone claims they had a bad feeling after the shits already happened 😂😂🤣🤣
Not cheating. This is just figuring out patterns same as like card counting in blackjack.
He didn’t lose. He scammed people out of around 4 million and was never caught. He did die somewhat young, but he had more talent than people who do TH-cam videos
He was actually 85 years old.
He totally never cheated!
Dude didn't cheat.
My bank isn't a loop hole
Boom! Game Over-
I don't like the title being SCANDAL. It makes it seem like Larsen did wrong which he didn't

Of course, he cheated the win goes to CBS!
