Hey, I was one of the designers on the game, nice to see a modern review !! Looking back 15+ years I only see the design flaws but I was happy to hear you bring up some of the nice features of this game.
The music was actually written by the legendary demoscene musician Purple Motion. In fact several demosceners were involved with the production of this game. The game may be just average for a space ship shooter, but it is absolutely incredible for a GBC game. Note the speed and amount of sprites on screen. Plus the music is amazing, just a shame its almost entirely covered up by sound effects during regular gameplay.
Absolutely agree, just a pure game focused, highly accurate review. Like the stuff he produced in 2009 and what was at the core of Classic Game Room. Not anything of the nonsense stuff he lately did (although this sometimes that can be quite fun, but not if it's all of the time)
I think, that's it, just the fact that it's a decent SHMUP on a console that isn't known for having all too many of them considering that's library wasn't all that expansive to being with. Sometimes that's all it takes to make something stand out a bit, not to take away from the game of course, which seems like a fine representative of the genre.
Well, Game Boy Color didn't have much time to get a huge library. It was only out for 2 1/2 years before the GBA and most companies stopped making games for it. Compared to like 9 years for the original Game Boy and maybe like 5 years for the GBA. So it makes sense to have less of everything on it. :P
Oh you know what other game this JUST reminded me of, Solar Striker for the original Gameboy. This should've been Solar Striker II: The Sun Strikes Back!
Scores are low probably due to limited screen estate, but honestly, I think this how every game should be. The smallest score unit should be 1. What's the point of having a whole bunch of zeros anyway?
It's a psychological trick really. You can see it with money. Currencies that are worth more (such as the british pound) give a false sense of how cheap things are. After being in the UK for 8 years I found the thought of paying $25 for a DVD absurdly high, yet in the UK I routinely bought 12 pound DVD's... Even though when you actually stop and think it through that's the exact same amount. Basically, bigger numbers seem more impressive and more significant. But yeah... 100 points as a minimum is kinda silly. XD
I remember playing this game maybe 5 years ago or so. Had fun for the 1st and maybe 2nd playthrough, but I got pretty bored of it after that. Speaking for myself it was fun for a quick playthrough, but it doesn't have replay value/longevity, though it probably wasn't designed for that. Not saying people shouldn't check it out, but I wouldn't break the bank for it.
Good game, with an amazing soundtrack, i truly love the music! However, a few misses.. The difficulty is the biggest issue. Iam not very good at these types of games, but i did finnish this game under one hour on my first try. Unlimited countinues is a good thing, but the game should have a difficult-option, with easy, medium and hard, like many other games. Second, the bossfights are quite lame, and sometimes, anyoing with some of them, having a wierd attacking, almost impossible to avoid, while the rest, including the last boss, are very easy.
It's incredibly rare, and was never even sold in many countries. Still, the frontlit model isn't terrible either... That's the only GBA I've ever owned, and it does a decent job...
It's not super rare. It came later, and didn't sell as many, as it was at the end of the console's life. They go for a bit more on eBay, but not that much. People also take the screens and put them into the first gen GBA, which gives you a backlight and a normal headphone jack on one system. This might be what I end up getting, especially as lithium ion batteries don't last forever, and eventually SPs and Micros won't work except when plugged in.
I had that game, it's technically impressive as others have commented, but it would've needed a better story and characters to engage the player. Bosses are very generic and forgettable.
This is one of those games that I lot of people like, but I really don't... I mean, it sure has nice graphics, but the gameplay in it just feels bad, and everyone raves about the music in this game, but all I hear are ear-splitting arpeggios, I don't like it at all...
Well, that's a musical style typical of European game composers who learnt how to create music in the C64, Atari 8 bit computers and the sinclair spectrum. There's a few NES games that exhibit a similar style. If you are sensitive to high frequency sounds though pretty much ALL music from 8 bit systems is probably horrible to listen to.

This is one of your better reviews I have seen from you since a while.

A good review, I appreciate the mellow, relaxed atmosphere and the sharp editing. Very well done.
One of your best reviews as of late, really nice, thanks.

I love the chilled out nature of this review.
Great review! Love to hear about these good, yet completely obscure games that might've otherwise been lost to recent memory.
The music sounds awesome in this game.
DatGameCollector IT IS VERY AWESOME!
Mark, you sound very composed and relaxed in this review.
Love this game :) The music is probably my favorite of the Game Boy Color releases
My favorite game growing up thank you for getting this
more gameboy reviews anyone?

Classic Game Room is
*Classic*
Way better game than Project S-10, where you drive a compact Chevy pickup to the hardware store for big points, and garden mulch.
I'll have to give this one a try. One of the better looking Game Boy Color games, and the music sounds great.
The way this game plays reminds me of the old DOS game Tyrian :D
I like the way this game looks.

Look at Mark rocking that pink GBA SP...
It's a GBA SP 101. :)
Two Minutes Turkish better than the SpongeBob one I have '3'
Dragoon-BB just reshell it

Looks and sounds great!
What's a good shmup game that is on gameboy color?
Centipede/Missile Command
out of what I've played R-Type DX ain't bad but, it's in a square format unlike this which gives you little time to react
I liked this review. It kind of had an old CGR feel to it
I love the boss theme

there not much vertical shooter on gbc.
what I wouldn't give to own a backlit GBA SP...
buzzworddujour I got mine for Christmas it is great
buzzworddujour yeah apparently there is a frontlight and backlight version.
It's incredibly rare, and was never even sold in many countries.

That's the only GBA I've ever owned, and it does a decent job...

I pity the fool who gave Mark a thumb down!
that's 8 bit? it seems like they pushed the systems limits!

It's a good average game... say what? Lol
back to mono tone mark I guess that's what everyone likes kinda boring to me

You must have the most sensitive ears...
thats the problem with a lot of gbc music it tries to be commodore 64

Project S-3 was way better
