Thank you for your concern for Cali and for your suggestions to keep her cool this summer. FYI, Golden Retrievers should never be shaved, nor should any other double coated breeds. Their insulating fur and outer guard hairs protect them from sun, insects and sharp objects and help regulate body heat, protecting them from heat and cold. Shaving Cali’s coat may cause permanent damage and may not grow back properly, putting her at further risk. She keeps cool by resting in the shade and regularly swimming in the cold spring fed creek or in nearby lakes.

Shawn, read up on spleenosis. (sp) We lost two dogs within 6 weeks of each other. It was from a spleen slowly bleeding out. I see some subtle signs in Cali. Our dogs were a black lab and golden retriever cross. It is quite common in dogs. Their owners usually just bury them and grieve. We have a vet in the family. She autopsied both. Watch her and don't assume it's just heat. :-)

Cali is a smart dog, once you have had heat exhaustion, you can be more sensitive to heat. Heavy coated dogs like Cali, or my Great Pyrenees “Cherokee” don’t do well once it warms up outside! They would rather have a snow storm any day! I so love watching your videos! Looks like you are going to have a wonderful garden!

Here's how we remove the undercoat on our GSDs. (Merely brushing will never get it all.)
First, wash the dog with DAWN Dish Detergent. Yes, it seems harsh, but you need that strength to dissolve the waxy plugs that are holding all the dead hair in place. (Dawn is what wildlife rehabbers use to clean oil-soaked waterfowl.)
Then let the dog air-dry till damp. Our rule-of-thumb is "dry enough to get in the back seat of the car." LOL
Then...this is the important part...force-dry the coat with a VERY strong blower. A Shop-Vac set to "blow" is ideal. My friend with Bloodhounds uses a llama dryer she got a t a farm auction! Do not use a human hair dryer, First, it usually cannot be set cool enough for the dog's comfort, even on "Cool," and second, it doesn't blow nearly hard enough.
With high-enough air velocity, CLOUDS of hair will blow out of her coat. You will be amazed!
Repeat in 10-14 days, to get the tenacious hairs that remain. Then, you're done till next year.

Seeing you do everything on your own, just basic farming, suddenly reminded me that, not too long ago in America and Canada, farmers who had to be self-reliant, meant by that reliance upon themselves, yes; but also reliance upon family, and if they were fortunate, sons!
I'm thinking of how long it takes you do just a few things, whereas with just one more person, imagine what could get done! But this is good. This is a practical reminder of what living really is; what it requires once one leaves behind the artificial civilization that has been created in the recent decades with its reliance *not* upon self. As the old saying goes, 'Mother Nature always bats last'.

I’ve learned a lot from you, thank you! To possibly reduce the water hauling a RAM PUMP might operate with the amount of water flow in the creek. If only a gallon or so an hour 24 hours a day would reduce the time to haul water by bucket. No energy required and can be built with PVC and a couple check valves. Thanks Again.

  • @DavidWvu
    @DavidWvu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The way I had the most success with planting potatoes is very similar to how you are doing it. I started with tilling the ground about 4 inches deep and then laying the potato seeds on top of the dirt. Then I wold cover them with about 2 feet of loose straw. Then place cow manure piles on top of the straw. I usually only watered if there was a dry spell where it hadn't rained in a week or so. That's it. I would then wait until the vines grew through the straw and started to die off and turn brown. Then just take a pitchfork and roll back the straw and pick up the clean beautiful potatoes. Good luck with your garden this year, Shawn.

As we know Bars are bug eating machines , especially Mosquitoes! From research iv'e found that on average a single Bat can eat between 1000 & 1,200 Mosquitoes in a single hr. Every little bit helps!

I have a neighbor that have horses and have got a lot of manure from their stable and I will combined that with the chipping from all wood we have and try to get a productive garden. You show how it can be done in the deep forests of Canada and we are living even further north but have a milder climate and there are much farms around.. You inspired me this morning! Just grins couple weeks ago I planted three red potato’s that had sprouted. The plants were about a foot high… you reminded me of the straw method of growing potatoes. In my junk pile I had two old wooden baby gates that were not really working anymore. So… around the potato plants I built a square with the baby gates, covered the sides with 1/4 inch hardware cloth to hold in the hay. I have chickens so, I have plenty of straw for bedding. Now I plan to add a new layer of straw about once a week as the plants grow taller… Hopefully, I will have a few red potatoes at the end of the season. Thank you for your reminder this morning!

I think you’ve inspired me to give the hay method of growing spuds a go. Thanks Shawn.

Great progress Shawn. Glad the weather conditions have finally started to cooperate. I didn’t expect to see the black flies so soon. As you said, it’s par for course in your area. Stay safe, healthy, productive,& blessed.💯❤️👍🏾😀🙋🏽‍♀️✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸

One year when we lived in Nova Scotia, we grew potatoes laid on top of the dirt and covered in a bed of seaweed. They were the best potatoes we ever had. Greetings from North Bay.:)

Very busy time of the year when it comes to planting. I'm north of you but we're getting the same weather pattern up here. The lakes are just clearing of ice this past week so anxious to get out in the canoe to do some Spring trout fishing.

Might look at getting Cali clipped for the summer (we used to do that for our goldens, and it gets very warm in sub tropical Brisbane). It's been 2 years since I said goodbye to my last golden.... but we're getting a new puppy in June!

Rhubarb, kale, and chives can handle the cold snaps pretty well and are perennials. Roses for hips and a pot or two of lavender. The lavender might need a good mulching in winter or over winter in the shop. I have brought my jasmine into my bathroom for the last two winters and will be putting it out soon.
With potatoes, I would cut them so each section had at least one eye, dust them with organic rooting powder and let them dry just a little and then planted them. I haven't tried the hay bale method yet. It seems to be very popular with gardeners Up North. My Curly Dock is starting it's first year and there are nettles, violets, and hopefully dandelions. Sorrel should be showing up soon.
Blessings on you, Cali and your family and friends and any wildlife wandering around your homestead!

You should take Cali to the groomer and see about taking off some of that winter fur. Love your videos…modern day Dick Proenneke!
