Calli is a wise old soul. She has all the secrets of old stored in her genes. Now if you can just teach her to pronounce words, she can teach us all her wisdom! She truly is a wonderful being.
Callie is stealing the show. From the way she looks at you to the wiggling of her nose while you speak, Callie is hilarious! What a wonderful dog! I wish you all the best with your gardens. It looks like a lot of work.
I know! I wasn't really listening to the green house part, I was just watching Cali's tail wagging happily as she went too and fro outside the windows!
Absolutely adorable! Calli wants that back scratched - very amusing to watch the interaction of man and his best friend. Also amazed at the care given to growing your own food. I like looking at your videos. I called videos "teachable moments".
With all the work and obvious research you're putting into this garden, there's no doubt that, given perhaps a smaller yield this first year, you're well on the way to building a superb food-producing garden that will serve you and your family for years.
Wow. The greenhouse looks spectacular! What is so inspiring about your life project is that the results of all of the hard labor are literal, tangible, and visible. So many of us labor long hours but have nothing we can hold in our hands at the end of the day. For you, a log hewn becomes a bench, and a shovelful of dirt becomes a blooming pepper. Anyone watching you knows none of this is easy; your rewards are hardwon but so incredibly meaningful. I admire you more than words can express, Shawn.
Shawn have you thought about adapting some of your lower Greenhouse panels to screens for summer? Then finding a maxx air brand fan? This might be a much more energy efficient way to cool your Greenhouse for summer? I live in a giant pile of rocks in the South United States , the vast majority is not under air conditioning, it's a long story but without that specific fan brand I would be a puddle at everyone's feet. I have a couple of different sizes but I have the air circulator and it really turns over some cubic feet per minute. Callie is adorable as ever, been watching you from the beginning. Men like you are inspiring millions to a more fulfilling life, well done.
The greenhouse garden looks great and the outdoors potato area will get there, it's tough getting the soil ready for a garden, but eventually it will all come together. You're doing an awesome job. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry and cool.
Maybe you need openings in the greenhouse where you can open in the hot weather and save running an ac unit. Would be more off grid. Old glass greenhouse had crank windows to control temperature.
Shawn, Good to see your foundations getting established. I've been out of action for a month, but got onto the allotment last Wednesday and tidied up some of the plot. Did a lot of weeding. I was gifted some kale plants 3 weeks ago! Finally got them in and netted. Birds are a problem. A crow fell in the water trough under the garden tap and drowned, even though there is a piece of wood to give an exit. (Gets filled with newts!) I put him up on a flat roof for the carrion birds. What I did not expect was that all of his mates would come around to pay their respects. It took about 2 hours for them to notice. There were about 50 in the end and they all had a good crow about the subject before leaving! Regards Stephen.
Hi Shawn and Cali , everything there looks great, caution though on all that hay on the ground, if the temperatures get too high scorching hot it might catch on fire .
We used to cover our garden with wood chips instaed of using black plastic. At the end of season we would till the wood chips and plant matter into the soil. In the spring till again and add another layer (6") of wood chips. Eliminates weeding too.
Things are coming right along! My cherry tomato plants , I planted in mid March are over 7 feet tall! And loaded with fruit! They have been under shade cloth for about a month now. We are well into 100+ degree days!
You can cool the greenhouse without power, with passive thermal cooling. Just put in an opening window panel at the highest point on the dome and underground air inlet pipes. Passive rising warm airflow out the top of the greenhouse will draw cooler air through the underground inlet tubes. See Earthships for a similar application. Passive air cooling, using the thermal mass of the earth. Even without underground pipes, an opening panel at the top would allow hot air to rise and exit and draw cooler air through the existing door etc.
One way to help the fertilitation of the flowers on your greenhouse tomatoes is to shake the plants each day to help fertilization. In the 70,s while traveling Europe I picked tomatoes and each day we would go along the rows of plants and give the strings hold up the plants a good tap to dislodge the pollen. Best time I was told by my boss was 11 am. Now of course I believe they use bees or the like to do the job.
Its surprising what Mother Nature can provide, even in the most difficult of soils and with mulches and varying amounts of nutrition other species can proliferate which in turn leads to enrichened soil, so I'm told by friends who have turned their gardens into food preparation. Cheers Shawn and Cali.
Your greenhouse is looking great, but I'm looking forward to seeing some more building of the cabin now, it seems like such a long time ago since we saw any, and I'm missing that part of the channel.
You know, Mr. James, I was proud of my garden, until I saw yours (and Emily's!). My, how pitiful mine looks now! In all seriousness though, I get such a kick out of your garden videos, they have encouraged me so very much. Thank you. P.S. I have been reading a couple books called "Roses Love Garlic" and "Carrots Love Tomatoes". Companion planting is something I am exploring right now.
Can't you make a rail on the outside of the greenhouse with solar panels that you can slide away from or in front of the green House? That way you have power always, and shade as well if you want to have shade in the greenhouse.
Mr Shawn, to help your peppers out, use the method called "topping" it will do two things, one is make the plant more bushy and second it will produce more fruits. A side note for peppers and tomatoes, save your banana peels, place them in a jar covered with water, after about one week take a two cups of said banana liquid add it to a five gallon pail and water. You do this when you see fruit starting on peppers and tomatoes so right after flowering.. it does two fold, helps with blossom end rot and larger more beautiful production. All the best.
Got to like a good thunderstorm, and actually the lightening during a thunderstorm adds nitrogen from what I've read so that's a plus too. Thanks for the update things are coming along nicely.
Can you recover some earth temperature cooling from the green house corrugated pipes under the beds. Put a fan on one end and maybe read the discharge temperature on the other end.
Shawn, for your peppers, you can cut off the tops and they will bush out better and put more growth into getting wider not taller. This helps with growing more peppers.
An avid follower of your impeccable craftsmanship; I salute you, Sir! Your work is the epitome of genius and originality!!! Your channel provides nothing, but the BEST (A CLASS BY ITSELF AND W/VERY FEW OF SUCH CALIBER): content that is both educational and recreational!!! 👊🤜🤛👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Figs do die out every year and then regrow in the spring. I grew figs in Oklahoma and that is how it grew every year. Also tomatoes in direct sunlight in Oklahoma with direct sun and heat of 97F or higher still bloom and produce fruit. The flowers do not fall off. Just to let you know. The same about our potatoes. Our summers will reach the three digit Farenheit all summer long and we still can harvest our crops.
Shawn, you mentioned that a lot of water, particularly rain; can't be retained due to drainage thru sand... What if you buried a few of those IBUs cut in half (horizontally) as moisture reservoirs ? Recycling some PET 2 L soda bottles or milk jugs (split vertically along 1 side) would act as small reservoirs you could place under individual plants as needed.
To promote flowering, add nutrients that are high in phosphorus and/or potassium. Excess green growth is often caused by nitrogen in excess. You can also expose the plants to some stress, ie let them dry out a bit as stress events can often promote flowering. If the plant "thinks" it might die it will start flowering to produce seed.
That’s what I was thinking. I’ll keep an eye on them to see if they use up most of the nitrogen from the chicken manure I added before tampering with them
I love watching you build your land ❤️ It's really exciting, I feel this property is so much more diverse than where the old cabin was Corpus Christi TX
I agree! Nice to get updates that are short and easy to watch in between longer videos. So many TH-cam accounts only post really long videos to watch and it’s hard to find time to watch those long videos!
Could you possibly remove two opposite panels in the dome, and make extra frames for them? You could then open them like window and cause a draft, like you would in a normal greenhouse. Hope I expressed this understandably.
The greenhouse is looking very good. You have got a lot of food growing in there. I hope to see some building of the cabin soon. All the best to you and the dog.
My Garden is outside.. with all this heat and natural rain that we are having, everything is growing crazy.. I actually need to start steaking my tomatoe plant's and pepper plants get soem crazy growth this year. It looks like for the first time we are close to the same size in plants very cool. Thanks for the update your garden is looking great cheers from Simcoe County Ontario Canada!
I used to like your other channel better with no talking. However, now I like this one. You give so much information, I feel I'm getting a private tour like you would give a family member. Not only is it really educational, but it's endearing as well. So, a humble thank you. Keep up the good work. It's impressive!
you'll get better yield with a longer vegetative growth, in a short northern season you'll not want to force flowering before the plant has enough strength to produce robust fruit. The slow onset of flowers seems counterintuitive but the plant knows what to do as long as it's provided for, being in a greenhouse is all the better.
I have a fig bush in a pot that is 2 1/2 feet tall and a foot and a half wide and right now I have 16 figs on a rather small bush So I really would leave it right where it is and just let it go
U R WAY SMARTER then you look! Granted I came to your channel years ago because of the handsome dog and somewhat handsome he-man owner. But brother, I am so glad I stuck around! A devastating combo of he-man good looks, book smart, your wife and kiddos R VERY LUCKY to have U!

Yes, Jenny K. Cali always steals the show. She is such a great pet and companion for Shawn. They share a very special bond. She is a happy, happy dog.

Prune your peppers!!! It works wonders... We learned this last year.
I love how Cali is so happy and truly loves you Shawn. Garden looks great!
As long as the spring is above your garden level, you can run a long 1in pipe and it will run water continuously even if it has to go over humps.
Been a year today since I lost my golden. So nice to see cali loving on you. ❤
With all the work and obvious research you're putting into this garden, there's no doubt that, given perhaps a smaller yield this first year, you're well on the way to building a superb food-producing garden that will serve you and your family for years.
You don't have to worry about food. You are so educated on gardening.
Shawn, just want to wish you a Happy Father’s Day! Keep up the good work.
Kali is so nice and intelligent. Love it. God bless you all.
I'm from Ontario and Jamie you are absolutely correct.Shawn blows my mind the way he does his work at the homestead, not to mention the foodie in him.
You inspired me to sacrifice half my flower garden for food growth. Have to say, LOVING IT ever since. Thank you for what you do, Shawn!
Sir… that companion you had with you in the video….. man cannot ask for a better companion than a golden !

The thunder was a perfect end to this video! Really enjoying the gardening phase of your homestead. Thanks so much.
Alfalfa will take a longer time to sprout up and grow but once it establishes and gets a good healthy rain, it will take off.

Cali' s such a sweetheart. Loved seeing her lean into you for a bit of quality time with her Dad.❤🐾🌻🌲
When Callie was standing in front of the camera and you giggled, I lost it. 😆

That's really interesting. Animals teach us so much.

Beautiful Cali says pet me daddy. So cute🐾🐕🐶
I can’t get over how much you know about building up soil, growing things, building, irrigation,…. Blows my mind!!

Here in eastern Missouri, lot of clay!
Takes time!
you could cut the tops from your peppers to encourage more brush like growth with more flowers and peppers

Nice to see the potatoes all sprouting up, and nice sometimes to see suprise plants in the green house, be safe and have fun

We’ve had rain all week. Good for the garden and ducks.
😁❤️🇨🇦
I like the braken fern coming up in the potato bed.
A big hug for beautiful Cali. Your indoor garden looks awesome.
Thank you ■ for discussing new garden soil start offs; patience
How are you doing with the cabin? I haven't seen anymore videos of you building the cabin. I like your gardening techniques. Interesting 👍👍👍
Its surprising what Mother Nature can provide, even in the most difficult of soils and with mulches and varying amounts of nutrition other species can proliferate which in turn leads to enrichened soil, so I'm told by friends who have turned their gardens into food preparation. Cheers Shawn and Cali.
Figs are generally not grafted. Great greenhouse garden.
This has been quite the endeavor for you and the family, I know you will reap the rewards.
Beautiful garden! Ours is getting fried here in Tennessee! 100 plus degrees we’re smothering.
Your greenhouse is looking great, but I'm looking forward to seeing some more building of the cabin now, it seems like such a long time ago since we saw any, and I'm missing that part of the channel.
Your greenhouse is looking lush with growth. I think you have the midas touch. 💞
You know, Mr. James, I was proud of my garden, until I saw yours (and Emily's!). My, how pitiful mine looks now! In all seriousness though, I get such a kick out of your garden videos, they have encouraged me so very much. Thank you.

Prune the peppers. Cut the top of them off. Leave about 4 to 6 leaves. They will put out more peppers.
Wow the thunder storm sounds amazing, I love a good thunderstorm, we don’t get many in the uk .

How beautiful the garden grows!
I am amazed at the amount of growth in the dome and in some of the items in the outside gardens.

That has to be the prettiest green house I’ve her seen; I could sleep in there
Excellent video update, thanks Shawn. 37°C in the greenhouse today.

My sweet cherries are ripening already, probably 4 weeks ahead of schedule due to the hot weather in May.

Fig will grow from a branch if you work with it. So if the fig is coming up from the root, It should grow into a fine tree. Let it grow.
The plant growth in your gardens is awesome! I hope it continues to be productive and you can harvest a good crop.
Amazing garden inside and out Shawn nice to see keep up the good work
Just wow! Your plant life is awesome Sean.
Looking absolutely awesome Shawn

Have you considered putting a vent in the apex of the greenhouse. The convection will alleviate much of your problem with the heat.
Love the thunder at the end. Nice touch.:)
I have had my fig freeze and die in NC they grow back true.
I love watching you build your land ❤️ It's really exciting, I feel this property is so much more diverse than where the old cabin was

indoor plants need to have air blowing on them to develop strong stems. Looks like you simply need more fans.

I just couldn't do the bug season.
what about using solar panels for shade clothes
you @james- maybe dont throw your stinging nettle out of the greenhouse? maybe throw it straight into the water bank? just a thought!
It appears, Cali was the star of this episode 😆
Such great info.. the gardens are fabulous.. thanks for sharing ❤️☮️
It might be wise to cut Cali’s ration a little bit for the hot weather.
Top the pepper plants and they will grow bushy, producing more fruit.
AMAZING TO SEE HOW FAST THE PLANTS ARE GROWING!!!!! SHAWN, YOU HAVE DONE AN AMAZING JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do take care. Fl., U.S.A.
