Woman’s Low Cost Living in a Renovated Camper Trailer

- After moving nearly a dozen times in 5 years, Arielle wanted a place to call her own. Now she is experimenting with alternative housing options and has started by buying and living in a renovated camper trailer. She invested $6,000 CAD to buy the RV and says it will be paid for in 2 seasons (the equivalent of paying $900/month on rent). She can then choose to try and make it through the winter in the trailer, or she can house sit, rent a room, or stay with friends during the colder months.

The interesting thing about investing some money into a trailer like this versus paying rent is that she can eventually sell the trailer and re-invest that money into a different housing option, and it will allow her to save money while she's living this low-cost lifestyle.
Arielle says that saving money was not the main reason she bought the trailer, but it is a nice benefit. She really wanted to own her own space, and to live outside the city. She asked around to find out if anyone would be willing to let her park the camper on their property and found an older woman living on an inactive farm who doesn't mind having her parked at the back of the property. Arielle pays $200/month to contribute to the hydro bill and to cover the cost of her staying there.
She gets electricity from an extension cord for lights and A/C, she uses propane for her stove and a small heater, and she brings in 5-gallon jugs of water for drinking and washing dishes. She can shower at work, or at the gym, and she has a dry toilet in the RV that separates liquids and solids.
Living in a trailer is not a new idea, but we still thought it was interesting to meet Arielle and find out why she decided to try an alternative housing option, how much it cost, what the pros and cons were, and where she found a space to park her RV.

Practical? She's reliant on friends and the gym or the workplace. She probably won't even make it through the winter. How on earth is that practical?
I absolutely agree, Rebecca. In regards to this video I just think that it paints a picture that is not entirely transparent. There is a lot more to living costs than rent and the purchase of the home. That trailer is most likely not going to be worth 6000 dollars when she wants to get out of it. That's putting it mildly. The video doesn't mention running costs or maintenance either.
it's pretty easy to take sponge baths and pay $10 for water; she's got a good system. I like the people in this channel; they don't spend $40K on a tiny house.
I didn’t say her living conditions were practical , in general it’s better to be practical than fancy . It works for her for now and she can modify as she needs .

I live in my camper full time too.. Even throughout the winter. I love it. Mine is parked in a double lot at an all year campground called Sycamore Springs Campground , in Vermontville, Michigan.
It runs us about $650 month to stay here in the winter. Summer prices drop. They don't charge for electric in the summer months. Making it half the price in the summer.
Less is best , more is a chore. Lovely💕

Both finished HS, one is putting herself thru college and the other lives with her fiance and young son in my home and is about to get married. So how can you say I resent my family? @@livamber202 Sandra Westley she has just stated she pays rent for her pitch, what is wrong with that, it’s no different to being on a camp site you pay a nightly fee, she pays a monthly fee, which I am sure the old lady is very grateful to have someone watch over her property to.
I love your home. Ive been thinking alternative living since my 30s. I'll be 61 next month and one day soon I'll be leaving my parents home whom I cared for after my husband's death. I want to live a low cost living and self sufficient as possible.
The simple fact that you are not living at someone's home is enough. Independence!!
She does not live independently at all. She is a) renting the space the trailer is parked on, b) has to fill up drinking water at friends' homes or buy it, c) does not really stay there all year round and has to move into "friends homes" for the winter and d) showers at work or gym. So, do not call this "independent". It is all but independent living. She is a nice dreamer but, only singles can do that and only if they have friends or relatives they can turn to when needed. And needed they are. Nice camping experience for someone who just eats and sleeps, that's all it is.

you should look into the cubic mini woodstove, they are made in canada. i have the bigger one, called the grizzly. they also make a smaller one called the cub, you would want the bigger one ( grizzly). they work and are made well. mine kept me aluve in my class c in -25 temps. they really help alot

please tell us what your experience is like. I am your age and wanting to do the same, so I am currently looking for a trailer.
I live in a four season rv full time . It is actually stationary now. I like the smaller space. It is a 27 ft and I actually wouldn't mind going even smaller for traveling with a smaller auto to pull it. I would feel safer hauling something small and am looking into it. Her trailer looks so much like the prowler I used to live in. I lived in it 6 yrs. such a great place. I was parked on a family’s property. When the family died I had to give it up but it was great having free rent for six years while I went to school to get my degree. All I paid for was propane and phone. I had water hooked up to their garden hose and the family ran electricity out to me. And they hooked me up to their septic system since I was parked right by the septic tank. We were on 10 acres of lemon trees. Had a huge garden and green house that nobody was using. The caretakers on the property had a laundry room they let me use. They even had chickens that I helped feed so they let me have an egg or two. Lots of fruit trees on the property too. Loved it. Living simply is the best way.

Awesomeness, and great timing for me to see this one. I'm staying at my folk's place for a month while they're travelling (they recently retired), caring for my special needs brother (he's 24, I'm 46, LOL). They have 2 campers on their property close to their house (they're far from minimalists, LOL!), the 36' travel trailer they're currently on the road with, and an older 36' 5th wheel camper that they'd bought for $2,000 needing a bit of work. POINT BEING (sorry, I get side tracked in details sometimes) I opted to live in the 5th wheel camper while I'm here. I'm loving it so far (2 weeks in, 2 to go), so this one was a great watch for me 😀👍

Yes. And if you do, it is usually pretty expensive to stay on a lot. The fees are horrendous.
My parents live in a similar trailer in BC all year round. They have wrapped their trailer in what’s called “boat wrapping” in winter to keep warm. They live the freedom that living this way brings them. I’m so happy for them! (My hubby and I will be downsizing from our 4 bed house to an apt or condo once we move to Alberta but that’s as small as we are willing to go! We’re not as brave as they are.)
Your place is so roomy , and it’s very comfortable by looking at it. even you have a family of three, I think will fit.
I started in a very similar trailer - 1986 prowler. I'm now in a much newer, nicer, bigger trailer and find myself missing the little one.

I lived in a three bedroom house in California, sold it, and whilst I was in transition to the West Palm Beach Florida I lived in my trailer that I never used till my move, I was happier living in that 8x33ft trailer than in my 2600sq ft home, I lived in it four years, I would do it again with out feeling any shame at all,it was very comfortable and great during the earth quakes. The main reason was the house required a twenty four hr dust mitten when I walked in the door.
As with most small dwelling, be it on wheels or otherwise, almost always we celebrate it by putting it on an open green land, or some kind of natural scenery to give the sense of expanse. In this place we can see that the lawn had been mowed recently, this implies a lot of landscape maintenance.
It's great to live in that peaceful place. That is a handy manual water pump dispenser.
I can relate to Arielle. Many years ago my husband at the time and I used to live in travel trailer almost like that one that she lives in. My ex husband live in North FLA in a house with his brother and I live in South FLA in a condo by myself. My ex in laws move out of the main house down the street into a another house and we move into main house and out of tiny travel trailer. I can relate to tiny living. If people want to live tiny living into tiny house or whatever who choose to live in go for it. you have my blessings. I think it is very interesting at times. Take care everyone.
Just moved into my sunnybrook rv , which is very similar to yours, full time 8 months ago, lil rough at first, but I finally figured out my creature comforts and it’s now smooth sailing. No rent is bliss!

Looks like the mid west. Here in TN it can get pretty cold in the winter. Also very green here in spring and summer. Does she have problems with spiders or bugs, ants. She didnt mention. She seems happy, so good for her 😊😊 my son and wife and 2 young kids are RV ing in florida to save and become debt free. Hope it works out.

I used to live in the US for 19 years and was pretty unhappy about my life. Now I moved to my native country, Mexico and I am as happy as ever. I know live close to my family members, live with the love of my life. I still take some time to do the things I like, like reading books and playing video games, going to the movies every once in a while. I dont live that bad at all compare to other people here in Mexico, but I can say that I had more comforts in USA, but for some reason that didn't really made me happy. Being here with my love ones, is what really makes me happy. Living in a space that I call my own. Really happiness is not always about material things, money and all that. A lot of people that have more money are quite unhappy about their life.
I don't usually like places like that. But that particular home is my favourite I've ever seen!
The 'fridge might work for awhile when the trailer isn't level, but we found out the hard way that it WILL self-destruct eventually. We knew better, but had pulled into a space that just wouldn't allow us to level... we tried for over an hour, then noticed we had a leak in our fuel line and the neighbors were getting ready to build a fire too close. We shut off the engine and stayed put. The 'fridge died a few days after we got home.

I'm in a older camper in Michigan and I winterized by tapeing plastic to my screens and fitting foam insulation into the windows that open. I also cover the door screen to help block high wind.

Look in to wood burning heater!! A small one will heat the whole tray with minimal effort and cost!

I am speaking from experience here, being a farmer and a soldier whom stayed in the back forties ...
@Tim Yes, a small wood heater would be perfect. I've seen people in tiny homes use pine cones to burn, which is a good resource!

My wife and I have been living in our remodeled camper for about 4 months now (we are saving to build a tiny home and farm infrastructure on some land we own). Our camper is a lot smaller than this one though haha but we have made it quite comfortable.
This is becoming the new norm. Like she said $800.00 per month in a tiny 1 bdrm apartment with the rent going up every single year. Folks are getting back to basics and loving it. It's so peaceful out there and beautiful.

I think it's great that she loves it and I totally understand the whole low cost living thing. Real running costs wasn't mentioned and she didn't sound too sure about how the home would be to live in in less than ideal temperatures. As much as I like watching these kind of videos they always point out the low cost (rent) and purchasing price but almost never really mention the real costs that are attached (heating/electric bill/maintenance) vs the appreciation in value connected to buying a house or apartment. What's the time span? That is a factor. Does she live there a year or two years? I don't see old used trailers going up in price. I'm not trying to put this video down. I'm just saying that a 200 dollar rent and 6000 dollars to buy the trailer is not a representation of what the actual costs are long term. Thanks for the video - kind regards, Jonas.
All valid points, but there's also home owners insurance, taxes, interest on a mortgage, etc. that comes with buying a house.

My "gripe" with the video was that the introduction says that they are going to deal with the pros and cons connected to this living style. I don't see them dealing with any of that. It's the 200 canadian dollar pricetag in rent that puzzles me. I'm not from canada but I'm assuming that even there it's "highly unlikely" to find a camp site or lot or basically anywhere with water and electricity where you can park your trailer and have everything covered for 200 canadian dollars a month?
@@JonasRosenven not from Canada either but here in the upper Midwestern US there are plenty of old farmsteads sitting unused all together or if used at all it's just for the out buildings as the houses are either gone or in desperate need of a match.
The key here is to network and ask around. Having some type of skill or even just extra time to help out is in your favor.
I agree, even her potentially having to pay $10 a week, is basically a water bill in an apartment, and at least in the apartment she would have heated running water

Would be interested to get an update of what life was/is like during lockdown.
I started out in travel trailers in a park back in 76 after Marine Corp. Rent was 45 a month, things were tight, but was really the best time of my life so far. I fondly think back to those wonderful times and wish I could relive them. I also think about the luxury a trailer has to offer after seeing how people in other countries live. Stay happy and thrive! Love it!! Great space. That is what I consider the perfect amount of space. Mine is 36 feet and I get a little stressed driving it because it is so long and the additional space in mine does not make it any more comfortable than mine. My question is; how much space does the radiator heat? I know you don’t want to keep the propane heat on overnight for safety reasons but what about putting a wood burning stove in? You are a very smart girl.💖
