This interview in 2016 got me to listen to Steve Martin’s audiobook. Amazing career. His standup career was short but he absolutely killed it. Reached the top and decided he wanted to do something else.
I went to see Steve Martin play the banjo and sing some songs with his band. It was one of the finest shows I ever went to. He's hilarious and talented.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles made me laugh the way Steve described…when he was cursing out Edie McClurg, I curled up into a ball and couldn’t breathe I was laughing so hard.
Steve could bomb and be hysterical doing it. His facial expressions broke me up. Planes Trains & Automobiles is a comedy masterpiece that I watch every year around Thanksgiving.
I saw him at The Boarding House on Bush Street in SF, mid-70's. Geez, almost 50 years ago. He was hilarious that night as he was just getting out there. .
This guy did Planes Trains and Automobiles with the Late great John Candy, and John Hughes at the directing helm. Arguably one of the best films of the 80s. If he did nothing else in his career that would have been a huge achievement anyway.
@@whiskeywhiskeyromeo3730 Ha. Awesome! But now the question needs to be asked... In what circumstances do you typically sing about Grandpa buying a condom? 😄😄😄
The stories of his residencies at Exit / In at Nashville are still discussed and remembered. His first appearance on.the Tonight Show he said he was from Nashville was interesting in that context. I'd love to see a bio pic about those times.
I saw Steve Martin at Alpine Valley near Whitewater WI., . Outdoor ampitheater, seating about 18,000 people, around 1978, long before giant TV screens at concerts. He opened with his "Magic Dime" trick. The rest of the show was even funnier.
With different roles, Steve Martin would have easily been a sex icon. Seriously, think of George Clooney, Sean Connery, and Sydney Poitier. Steve Martin has always been super handsome and charismatic in my eyes. Being funny and silly was just the icing on the cake.
That's actually brilliant in cities with popular bars that people come to any way. The club doesn't have to pay you. So they think why not. So long as their customers don't get al pissed about the cover charge and most will not. Some will watch the show and some will not. the ones that watch grow your audience.
Steve Martin is in the top 3 greatest of all male comedians, in my opinion. Sensational actor, and ironically we share the same birthday, along with Magic Johnson.
I saw Steve at The Birdcage theater when I was a kid. He was so funny. The play he was in was not necessarily a comedy but he was the center of attention because he was being silly. People laughed at his facial expressions and movements.
I haven't seen any teens on youtube killing it, but I guess I haven't heard of them. I've seen musicians killing it, but still not many great songwriters. In terms of comedy, I've seen essentially nothing.
Yes but Steve corrected Howard more than once. I think Howard does this sometimes as a way to prod the guest for deeper personal perspectives. I loved the response about theory vs revelation
Howard: "You are good at that." Steve: "No." Howard: "That's very clever." Steve: "No." lol Something tells me Mr. Martin doesn't do well with compliments.

I love the philosophical perspective he brought to comedy. Pure artistry.

And her reply was the most perfect moment in cinema.

Best movie ever
The TV version has him only saying that “he wants a car...NOW!” And she says “you’re screwed.”
That line is hilarious! Thx for sharing.
The Jerk is one of the best comedy’s ever made. He was hilarious
"You mean I'm going to stay this color?" 🤣🤣🤣
Comedy’s what?

Steve Martin is a legend
Steve Martin is a Class Act.
He was amazing in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.!! As well as everything else.
Your punctuation betrays your message.
Oh my gosh. I love that movie!!!!!🏆
Great movie!
Great film.
One of the best, (under the radar) movies ever!
Howard: ask a question and then answer for you. Let Steve answer your question
These deep dives into the craft are amazing. Thanks for these slices from the full interviews.
Best standup there ever was or ever will be, the
true king of comedy.
Steve Martin is the jazz of stand up comedy. His Letterman sketches had me dying of laughter
"It wasn't a revelation, it was a theory." That's pretty damn deep.
And risky as hell. But as he said, "You had to."
Steve could bomb and be hysterical doing it. His facial expressions broke me up. Planes Trains & Automobiles is a comedy masterpiece that I watch every year around Thanksgiving.
Steve is great, but the film is comedy Candy.
@@davidjorgensen877 nice. Candy deserved an Oscar.
Listened to his audio book and it couldnt have been more beautiful, especially if you're a comedian
Incredibly humble and authentically so
That's great, that's the best (part of an) interview I've ever heard of Steve Martin.
Thanks Howard.
Have always loved Steve Martin.
as a young boy he made me laugh. introduced me to comedy. love the guy still.
I saw him at The Boarding House on Bush Street in SF, mid-70's. Geez, almost 50 years ago. He was hilarious that night as he was just getting out there. .
Greetings fellow San Franciscan! 🙂
Amazing you are able to recall the night at all after 50 years! I can’t recall 90% of the content I saw in the 80s/90s.
@@kevn99 My memory is soooo good for rote stuff. The street address was 960 Bush Street. 😉
As a brand new dj on the scene in downtown denver this clip resonates with me.

An excellent, insightful set of questions
Taking notes is key.
Polishing the craft is constant.
“My special purpose” is authentic laughter from me

Planes Trains and Automobiles - my favorite movie
"Hey! Okay! 🎵 Grandpaaaaa bought a rubber.🎶"
This may sum up perfectly his comedic philosophy on the second type of laughter.
Congratulations on Grandpa bought a rubber....been saying that for 50 years and nobody gets it......you are first......

@@finnsterling6514 unusual ones.....obviously!
My favorite story from his book is when he’s talking about performing in some coffee shop after these two musicians named Buckingham and Nicks.
Very interesting! Kudos to Howard for another great interview!

This is what Howard does best. Steve is a comic genius
Yes, one of his best interviews on comedy.
Steve is my favorite Martin…
I love Steve Martin!
The best career advice I ever got was, 'Always wipe everything down'
You know, for prints.
Thx 'Throttle Bob'
Thx Uncle Twisty
Steve Martin ❤️❤️❤️
Best advise I ever heard was "Always keep a litter bag in your car."
What a legend! 🔥
Best example of the kind of laugh he was after - The Great Flydini
LEGEND!!
Fantastic interview!!😊
"...and then Bob Einstein lived above, I lived below..." RIP Super.
So many very bright entertainers.
Great introspection and critiquing himself.
When Howard actually just sits back and listens, he’s really good, world class. It basically took him 25 years to learn to stfu.
that must have been after this interview
@@rayc7192 LOL 😂
Interesting analysis of laughter.

I don't understand how a human can look exactly the same for 45 years.
Love it!
Now I want ice tea 😑
pure talent
Great interview
I love "be so good they cant ignore you"and I raise "be so good they try to assassinate your character"
Steve Martin was always a comedic outlier. He was either going to bomb completely & go nowhere OR become a comedy rock star. No in between.
"Son, you got an oblique sense of humor."
Thank you very much
A comedian...My brother (Phi Sig Kappa) worked security. I simply had to listern and understand. A great... No Doubt
I wonder if Howard really needs a guest he could just ask and answer the question
Housesitter with Goldie Hawn! That did it for me. Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral!
Legend.
You know Howard had to be preoccupied with the chance that Steve's cup would tip over onto the couch.

It’s hard to argue against Steve, that’s for sure.
The Birthday thing is just outstanding, we are totally impressed
You might want to look up the word “ironically.”
I love ❤️ watching his 👋 hands the gentle way he talks with them.
Was anybody else waiting for him to knock his drink over?
He's a genius
Steve Martin: “I don’t wanna do punchline jokes”
Norm McDonald: “a frog gets into a bank…”
Simply the BEST 👌 Tina Turner
Howard didn't seem to care about letting Steve talk, he just wanted Howard Stern to talk. Stopped 1/3 of the way through this nonsense.
I saw Steve at The Birdcage theater when I was a kid. He was so funny. The play he was in was not necessarily a comedy but he was the center of attention because he was being silly. People laughed at his facial expressions and movements.
You just made that up. You're were at the Birdcage as a kid.
This was a very good interview.
Genius
Howard keeps trying to butter him up, but Steve is too humble.
Nice
👍
Nothing made me laugh harder when he said " Those aren't pillows".
His Mark Twain award speech causes the kind of sustained laugher he talks about here.
Howard Stern is a primo interviewer. (And he knows how to mic himself.)
Time for an authorized Steve Martin documentary.
We will be watching
The second kind of laughter was what Andy Griffith strived for on his show in 1960.
Has Martin Short done any interviews with Howard Stern (is now what I am thinking)? (Nes Manga)
See you back on the mothership, Steve.
My Blue Heaven = Hilarious!
Before watching this I'm going to guess his best advice ever received..... Put down the damn banjo!
Stern: Did you do, because you, and then, you did, but then, what about, were you?
good interviewers ask questions youd ask great interviewers ask things you wouldnt think to ask
excuuuuuuuuuuuse meeeeeeeeeee!
Howard Stern should listen a whole lot more, and talk a whole lot less.
I haven't seen any teens on youtube killing it, but I guess I haven't heard of them. I've seen musicians killing it, but still not many great songwriters. In terms of comedy, I've seen essentially nothing.
Howard seems to know more about Steve Martin then Steve Martin. Seemed to try to put words in his mouth
Maybe just Howard's way of keeping the focus on himself rather than the guest.
Yes but Steve corrected Howard more than once. I think Howard does this sometimes as a way to prod the guest for deeper personal perspectives. I loved the response about theory vs revelation
King Tut
Gary Muledeer 😂
Howard your questions are too probing & disrespectful for Steve '
imagining selling out is tough until you listen to howard money talks and bullshit walks
Stern is so pushy, he plays both roles - himself and Maritn. There no need for Stever to be there. Howard can ask and answer all the Q's.
That’s a soft take
I didn't catch the advice he received
Howard: "You are good at that."
Steve: "No."
Howard: "That's very clever."
Steve: "No."
lol
Something tells me Mr. Martin doesn't do well with compliments.
Does Steve’s voice sound weird here?
You did understand that most peoples’ voices change when they get older?
howard talks way too much
Howard trying to psychoanalyze Steve Martin. What a joke.
He asked him a few questions. Calm down 🤣
