"You said Mary Lincoln could be pushy!" Marty's put-downs are always so choice. "There's a difference between being excited to be on Johnny Carson...and to be slumming it." Ha!
All three of these guys are at the pinnacle of pro comedy - so revered and yet so down to earth and humble at the same time, it's heart-warming to behold.
Stories with the names Johnny, Bette Davis, Peter Sellers, Neil Simon, Carl Reiner, John Mulaney, Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, not to mention these three national treasures. I could listen to them forever.
I was in high school early seventies the first time I saw Steve Martin do standup on Carson. I had never seen anything like him, he was doing this absurdist, non-sequitur style humor that I loved and was totally unique. Anyway, one of the 'jokes" he told was "I like to give my cat a bath, but the hair gets all over my tongue". Then, he puts his famous arrow through his head, pulls his mouth wide open and before he starts jumping up and down, blurts out "here's something you don't often see!". Well then, there you go, a birth of a legend. And I have an inkling that "cat" joke might have been the reason that old lady he met said "yuk".
Steve's comedy has been so expertly refined over the years and that's why he is still on top. He left the white suit and the arrow behind in the 80's and began making movies that were the top comedies (and even some dramas), now he is back on TV with "Only Murders...." and the best nightclub stage act since the Rat Pack, which he does with Marty. All through this time he has been a musician, an art collector and connoisseur, a writer, a playwright and basically the renaissance man of our time.
Never could have predicted way back then how successful and varied his career would be. I was just happy that here was this new, edgy standup comedian that wasn't doing warmed over borscht belt schtick or pained political satire. He ushered in the "modern" comedy that was adopted, transformed and curated by Letterman and is still in fashion today by disciples like Conan & Kimmel. I remember telling everybody I knew you gotta' see this Steven Martin guy before anybody had heard of him, so I'm going to take a little bit of credit!
Likely a combo of great genes and taking care of himself. I remember stories of Steve hanging out with the Laurel Canyon musicians of the late '60s-early '70s, and he was one of the few who did not take drugs.
@@markb20 Agreed: he's always been at a healthy weight and, from what I read years ago, exercised regularly. Plus, he's stayed creative with comedy, music, and writing, which is great for the brain. I hope I age half as well!
@@makeadifference4all Yes, and as you said, Steve was always an intelligent guy. He grew up mainly in the '60s and rocketed to fame in the '70s when drugs and alcohol were everywhere. He was smart and disciplined enough to avoid those wasteful situations.
Connan O'Brian is my all time favorite he has cheered me up for many yrs n only late night host to bring me to tears with laughter n i thank you so much mr O'Brian
I must say (nod to Ed Grimley), that I fell in love with Steve Martin's zany (see Happy feet) early comedy and then over the years read his books and watched as his movies evolved and now I am in awe of his acerbic wit and perfect timing. It is simply unparalleled in show business. I was also reminded, while watching this clip that I should never be drinking coffee while watching Steve tell a story.
People didn't get Steve Martin's act at first. He didn't really tell jokes or do observational humor. He did bits, like the happy feet, the Groucho mask, the arrow through the head, playing the banjo .... off the wall stuff. He was much better suited for The Smothers Brothers or SNL than Carson.
I'll be honest...when Conan first came out I was like "who tf is this goober," but over time as I heard him I saw that he belonged, and I'm happy for his success. As for Short and esp Martin, you are kidding me, we should all be genuflecting as we watch this :)
I've always said, Conan and Jerry Seinfeld are real students and historians of comedy, and someday, when people like Steve and Martin are gone, Conan will have all these remembrances and fountains of stories of the great comedians to pass on to the next generation.
Was thinking the same thing. Just as there are young comedians and people who revere Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers- and always will through their old age.
I could watch these three guys all day, every day My three favorite comedians whom have all made me laugh for 40 years !!! Thank you three gentlemen for all the laughs and quoteable lines But... Monorail Episode for the win haha
One of my most favorite movies is "Mixed Nuts," starring STEVE MARTIN (soo good at soo much!!) & Juliette Lewis (she so hit the🎯 w/her character), Rita Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia, Madeline Kan, Garry Shandling, Steven Wright, Adam Sandler, Liev Schreiber (amazing job!), Robert Klein & more. It's a farce, but more than meets the eye. I think it was waaay ahead of its time; critics didn't grok it/appreciate all the creativity & artistry of writers, cast, crew & director; couldn't imagine there were lots of peeps who would love it (for the so many reasons as there are layers & facets to it, including the variety of humor mixed w/varieties of real-life angst & ambivalences, nefarious peeps, absurdities, surprises, a very rich farce that provides food for thought long after movie ends).
@@daveclark8337Conan didn't spend most of his time on basic cable. He spent 17 years hosting a talk show on NBC, and after the Leno debacle did 11 years on TBS. And if it wasn't for Jay, I guarantee we wouldn't have to suffer through Jimmy Fallon. I won't say Conan is as good as Carson, but it's comparing apples to oranges. The world changes, and though Johnny was a titan of late night, I personally appreciate Conan's sense of humor more, but that might be a result of being in Conan's target demographic my whole life. If the Internet didn't exists, Conan would still be on network TV, no doubt, because Letterman would have invited him to take over the Late Show after what happened with Leno.
Conan is far too humble to ever believe that he's at Carson's level. Only young people that weren't alive when the Carson show was on the air believe that.
3:49 that was the difference between Norm Macdonald on Conan vs Norm on letterman. He behaved on letterman out of awe and respect, but played more with Conan.
My prayers are with Conan's family. It must be really difficult for him to hold his tears back after losing his mother, who died 3 days after the demise of the father!! What an unimaginable loss!!
Conan is so deferential to these guys. I think he was to his guests on television. Can’t remember. Would like to see him back again. Unfortunately, none of the networks have ever been strong on taking risks.
This was one of the best segments of this episode. It's fun to watch Conan make Marty laugh. He seems like a tough nut to crack sometimes. Im so glad i had those two old farts since the early 80s as a kid ❤
You guys mentioned death and then prayer. On Sept 30, a group of friends and I are doing music for a memorial service for a good friend who passed away recently. Got any humor ideas that would be appropriate for this? We’ll be playing older church songs in a banjo/mandolin/acoustic gtr fashion.
Back in 1979 a friend in L.A. told me that he saw Steve Martin walking by on Sunset the day after his first "Tonight Show" appearance and stopped him to congratulate him. He said Martin was very understated and it seemed like he wasn't expecting to be recognized. Did Steve forget this or was my friend making it all up?
Poor Steve has to feel sort of "left out" the last day or 2 seeing Marty and Conesy trending on Twitter with people defending and saying incredibly nice things about them.

Back when he was a wild & crazy guy.
They missed a joke there, "Turns out it was his mom...."
Have much respect towards those three. Legends, hope they will leave a great legacy and teach the next generation!
"I was the control group". Steve Martin doesn't have a lot of zingers, but when he hits it he nails it big. Funniest joke of the segment!
Unbelievable that Steve Martin is 77 in this interview. He looks 20 years younger, and he's still so sharp.
He's looked 37 for the last 40 years
I remember when his hair turned prematurely gray but it still didn't make him look any older.

The genuine laugh of Short at 3:20 perhaps hearing a story for the first time

“What if we all prayed right now?” That killed me
So wonderful to watch these guys tell their stories.
wow....that last second throwing shade at Paulie Shore by Martin Short is brutal.
_I was the control group._
That is a very _smart_ funny thing to say on the spur of the moment. Steve Martin is a smart person.
Loved Martin Short and Christopher Guest in 1984 as synchronized swimmers on SNL.
I could listen to these guys talk and tell stories for a solid week.
Love seeing you guys have fun together…three favorite people I’m a lifelong fan

It is rare to see Conan so in awe with his guests that he was unable to delve into his inexhaustible reservoir of ingenious quips.
Steve’s appearances on Carson are really funny. He had such a great rapport with Carson who really brought out the best in him.
"Pauly Shore fell out." (As the video segment ends and it was my favorite line of the whole interview)

Jerry Sri field is so overrated though. Not comparable to conan who is humble and willing to adapt to modern age comedy.

I could just marinate in these Steve, Martin, Conan conversations for hours.
I Conan fully understands that he's his generation's Carson.
He's by far the best at what he does.
Stop it. They were never in the same league. Carson would be Hall of Fame whereas Conan spent most of his career in the minor leagues: ie basic cable.

That Pauly Shore dig was hilarious!
nah, kinda easy and old, people should leave the guy alone
They have caller ID. Classic
I remember Marty's spit take and the line that induced it:

How does a 21 yr old get a job writing for against network comedy show in the late 60s/early 70s. Just insane.
They hired a lot of writers for those type of shows, basically anybody who ever submitted a joke. Not that unusual.
It’s gonna be a fucken sad, sad day the day we lose Steve. Marty, not so much. 😉
Steve Martin will never not be one of the funniest men on earth. After he dies, I bet he even smells funny!
He will , cuz he keeps bologna in his shoes to make him feel funny.
