Oh shut up with the gag worthy positivity in regards to every little simple thing. He's fundamentally 2 months late, regardless I love John and watched, it's that easy ! :)
Do you think they made Wilson sound so over the top villainous so that people would assume he couldn't be the villain and then subvert the subversion or do you think they just wanted everyone to think he's the villain from the get-go?
Kinda reminds me what they did with Dio from Virtue's Last Reward. He was so obviously villainous that him actually being a villain is a bit of a surprise
They tried to outsmart the audience's outsmarting, but the audience outsmarted their outsmarting of our outsmarting. Translation: I don't think they actually knew what they were doing.
The first option gives the writers way too much credit. They made William evil sounding because he's evil. All the other "evil" characters are ridiculously over the top as well.
Honestly, I never considered the idea that Wilson was designed to be obviously-evil BECAUSE he was obviously evil. I just thought he was a bit of a creep. I suppose that was the benefit of the doubt I was willing to give them.
As good as the aesthetic of this series is, its worst quality is that it completely fails to tie the aesthetic to the gameplay. I mean the premise is essentially being drawn into a nightmarish world populated with warped ink-based rubberhose toons but even Bendy rarely acts in ways that tie into that idea let alone the player character. While watching I was dwelling on the fact that it seemed like they were trying to build a friendship between Audrey & Bendy so it would have been cool to have Bendy help you in combat with cartoon gimmicks like giant mallets, portable black holes & exploding pies & the like (at least in a few set piece battles). Or better yet if Audrey simply learned abilities like that that tie into the reveal that she is essentially also a toon-like being made of ink. Instead from start to finish it’s just pipe-smacking & nothing that really links the aesthetic to the gameplay or even story really if I’m being honest, at least nothing memorable or interesting.
That lack of cartoon influence beyond a surface level coat of paint is so frustrating about Bendy. The monsters don't act like cartoons at all. Sometimes they don't even look like them. It's a lot of wasted potential. You could make something really unsettling if enemies, or at least Bendy himself, acted like a cartoon in real life. Especially rubber hose cartoons which could be pretty damn creepy. What's funny in a cartoon could be really disturbing in real life. Think Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit. Like imagine if Bendy could just walk through walls with a black hole. Or imagine finding someone crushed flat by an anvil. Or Bendy just pulling deadly weapons out of nowhere to kill you. If you try to attack him, he just cartoonishly bends and twists his body to dodge your attacks, or he causes his face to flatten out from the strike and he just reinflates himself by blowing into his thumb. He's basically invincible, because you can't kill a cartoon. And don't give him a voice. Make him act like a silent cartoon, just menacing gestures. And animate him like he has no bones. It feels like these developers don't actually care that much about using the theming of cartoons and cartoon production. Compare this to Cuphead where it's clear Studio MDHR studied old cartoons fervently to accurately reproduce the feel.
I actually think some Dishonored/bioshock magic system gameplay would help a lot in making bendy more engaging. Like being able to hop between ink puddles and have to refill your ink at stations, and if we wanted to make it more survival horror, the ink could also be your health bar. Making magic options that better conceal you cost hp making the safer options a little riskier and the risky options sometimes better than needlessly wasting hp. Add something more to make it feel more like a game.
@@JillLulamoonyeah I agree. I would say BATDR is better than the first, but I wish they dove more into the idea that you’re trapped in a nightmarish ink infested cartoon world and design the gameplay to reflect that.
It's also strange when Audrey (or any other character) can't pass through a small space or through grates. I kept expecting a reveal where you think you're safe, but then an enemy just schlorps through whatever the barrier was, because everyone is a cartoon character made out of magic slime. [edit] AND ANOTHER THING: How have we had two games about an artist trapped in a magic ink zone but neither protagonist ever gets a brush pen and starts creating their own stuff? You're an animator fighting living drawings but it never comes up even as an afterthought? Or they could at least use ink to create cartoon holes and the like, as you said.
If anyone is curious, there are two really great documentaries by Chris Portal about the development of Bendy, controversies, internal studio drama, mass layoffs of staff during the pandemic, failure of Showdown Bandit, etc. John's assessment that Bendy's focus dramatically changed after its popularity isn't far off. Mike Mood and Meatly more or less admitted that the story was written on the fly. In particular, Episode 3 focus on Alice Angel was done in response to fan speculation and popularity, not because it was planned. They just wanted to get fans speculating and MatPat to make videos about their game. In hindsight it's very amusing people say they played Bendy for the story, because there honestly was no story. BaTIM had at best a very bare bones story outline, filled by characters who spout vague dialogue that may mean something or may not. Henry the protagonist even says multiple times he doesn't know why he's even at the studio, and by the end of the game, I don't know either. There's nothing there lol. Mike Mood was accused of being a jerk who suffered from mood swings and was quoted by an ex employee to have said in response to slow development "We make games for stupid kids, this isn't that hard." Yeah... Bendy got by purely on it's aesthetics. It's a real shame. If there are any kids out there who loved Bendy, I would implore them to play Bioshock instead. TheMeatly LOOOVES Bioshock by his own admission, and pretty blatantly copied it, albeit poorly. Bioshock is a million times better than anything related to Bendy and much more worth your time. EDIT: Bioshock also has functioning combat my Lord Bendy's combat is hot garbage. This looks enraging to play lol.
Yeah, the first game's story was really written on the fly. It's why the books the series has are so much better (also helps they are written by a professional). Honestly, the best way to engage with this series is through its books since they're lot more fulfilling and interesting (though potentially one is filled with art taken from others without credit)
"Do you ever get a sound byte stuck in your head?" Holy shit, YES. There was a time when I had Atlas from Bioshock saying "Nice work, boyo!" stuck in my head for like two weeks. It drove me bananas, as much as I love that game and quote.
I think the game could definitely use more non-hostile characters. Really missed an opportunity with the painter. He had this bullied, anxious personality that they could have expanded upon.
What annoys me the most about the series is that the story had so much potential. It was neat how the first two episodes were about the lost era of silent film/animation which as a wannabe filmmaker and a history buff, the story had potential. There's something about the transition to sound/talkies and the artists who were the Leonardo DiCaprio's/Meryl Streep's being left behind makes you feel sad for them. With that being said, if all that melancholy and nostalgia from that transition phase is done correctly, then I would buy the game in a heartbeat. (Interesting fact, about 90% silent film/animation is lost or destroyed and about 75% of those lost films are permanently destroyed).
One of the things I appreciate the most about your videos is the voice acting; it's always top notch. Sometimes it's bad and it makes it even better. Great video!
it's funny because the evil characters were so ridiculously evil that while I wasn't watching there were I few times when I thought it was John making fun on them, but no, it was the real voice acting for the game
@@Phantom-kc9ly If you look at his Twitch, most of the long vids he puts on this channel actually aren't from VODs, they're just long videos from multiple solo recording sessions edited together, like this video. His Twitch VODs are usually DBD and get edited into smaller videos on his DBD YT channel. I think he's said before that for now he just prefers to make long YT videos instead of multiple parts because they actually perform better? Don't quote me on that, but pretty sure he's mentioned he prefers to make long videos instead of multi-chunk series. Maybe in a YT announcement video...?
I’m so glad to see you doing well and bouncing back. As others have said, you’re right on time and we support you taking care of you. Besides, you’re giving us 5 hours of sass, humor, and those luscious locks! It’s worth the wait.
Fun fact John, the reason that guy spotted you instantly when you came out of hiding at 46:03 was because when you exit a hiding spot, you are not crouched. Enemies will instantly redetect you, it's very stupid.
Tbh, the "loop" isn't an excuse for repetitive story beats. There are plenty of games and stories out there that take place in some sort of setting like that, or play with themes like that, or even just play with expectations and tropes along the course of the series-- that do so in much more clever ways. It's not enough to repeat a scene and go "weird, this feels familiar!" The key is doing something clever with how it's both similar and different.
@@rudolfambrozenvtuber Seriously. One of my favorite uses of a time loop. Each loop has recurring elements but is always different. Sometimes extremely, sometimes subtle. Like each loop the group always meets Jirou and Takano a few days before the festival, Oishi always arrives in Hinamizami to investigate, etc. But the actual things can change wildly. Keeps things interesting.
The amount of restraint and chances John has given this game is quite commendable. He even apologized when dissing certain parts but he’s honest about the flaws. He’s pretty spot on about this franchise being this TH-cam game with little actual substance.
i nearly died of laughter when John said "sincerely, evil". it caught me so off guard lmao it's great to see you back, though! I hope 2023 treats you well!!
If Bendy ever gets another game to the franchise, I'd love to see them explore cartoony/artsy elements more. The mascot is literally a cute cartoon character brought to life; wouldn't it be cool if the toons actually animated like literal cartoons? Or in a fight, they pulled random weapons and items out of hammerspace? I know in the current canon that wouldn't make sense; they aren't ACTUAL cartoons ripped off the page, they're simply made to resemble them....but it would be a really cool feature imo.
I was actually thinking while watching that it seems like they were trying to build a friendship between Audrey & Bendy so it would have been cool to have Bendy help you in combat with cartoon gimmicks like giant mallets, portable black holes & exploding pies & the like or if Audrey simply learned abilities like that that tie into the reveal that she is essentially also a toon made of ink. Instead from start to finish it’s just pipe-smacking & absolutely no capitalizing on the premise of a world of ink-based rubberhose toons.
John saying "Oh, it's always something, isn't it?" about finding a fuse, reminds me of the first game. When the protag asks why the doors are always blocked, and without missing a beat John replies "padding"
I love how the finale really wants to drum up this big epic trimphant climax and it just... Hasn't earned a lick of it. Even across two games and reading all the notes, these characters are too bare-boned and absent for the 'aw shit, everyone's here to help' moment to mean anything.
One thing I really appreciated about John as a gaming youtuber is that he doesn’t do those cringey over the top reactions that a lot of others do. Dude’s just real with you and it makes it enjoyable to watch in my opinion
I can't believe Meatly borrowed (or, if you're cynical like me, ripped off) two separate plot elements from Bioshock and mashed them together. Audrey is Joey Drew, creator of Bendy, daughter and has special powers. Jack is Andrew Ryan, creator of Rapture, son. Elizabeth is Comstock, leader of Columbia, daughter. She has special powers as well. Audrey's design is really aping Elizabeth as well. Audrey is pretty much just a mixture of Jack and Elizabeth from Bioshock 1 and Infinite.
@@JillLulamoon Audrey isn't Joey Drew and Henry from the first game created Bendy. And i don't remember Bioshock too well, but i'm pretty sure that Jack isn't Andrew Ryan.
The art style for this game and it's predecessor are just really cool. I love how it's designed as well as the color scheme. The creativity was neat too! The creature design for the Ink Demon and the Dudley character were badass. I even thought the story was a lot more interesting than the first game, even if it did head down a weird path. However, John makes SO MANY good points so I won't list my gripes with the game because he pretty much nailed it. I don't like the idea of just hitting the same button over and over again to defeat enemies either. There's too many little things I could comment on but, again, John's opinions were essentially mine too.
John was pointing it out, but Audrey's weird non-reactions are kind of jarring. She didn't really react at all to finding herself in this weirdo world after drowning in ink, or that Butcher guy's body falling out of the grate overhead, only seemed to react when she was talking to Alice. Her immediately trying to make friends with Lil Bendy and feeling bad when she chased him off, feels like she's just supposed to be a surrogate for all the kids out there who are already fans of the game, are used to the world and don't question it because they already saw/played the original, and really like Bendy and think he's cute. Like she only gets to react when she has to for cutscenes or when the returning player might have a reaction. I don't really remember if that was a problem with the og protag too bc honestly I have trouble remembering that game, so maybe the Bendy protags are always just kinda off like that. I did really like the voice acting for Audrey though, which is why I'm sad she didn't have more of a presence as a character. When she was telling Alice, "I don't know where I am, it's dark and I don't know what to do," she sounded SO defeated and it suddenly made me feel really bad for her even if I didn't care about the character before that. Would've loved to see her freak out more to the world she was in, adjust to it, and get braver and more confident over the course of the game instead of it just happening randomly when it suits the story.
Disappointingly enough, BatIM’s protag is somehow even more off-sounding than Audrey. He doesn’t react to the things that actually matter, he rarely shows any emotion. Old presumed coworker gets hit in the head with an axe right in front of him? No comment. Find a hat after killing a monster? Definitely gotta comment on that. Audrey is an improvement on Henry, but that doesn’t mean all that much.
I absolutely love how you put the hearthstone sound bytes in whenever they popped into your head. Just hearing you say them perfectly in sync got me every time. Loved hearing the "scrappy" line throughout Choo Choo Charles too. Keep up the great work John, love your vids
John, you're so right about people mistaking you for pessimistic, because I thought the Quarry was gonna be bad just from the dialogue alone, but in hindsight it was much better than that Evil McMansion Dark Pictures episode.
I noticed that too. It was probably meant as a cute reference but considering how mediocre Dark Revival is it's almost a little offensive. This game is Diet Bioshock with terrible combat. Shit, System Shock 2 combat is better than this.
@@JillLulamoonOffensive!? Are you really trying to be this dramatic? Cmon just because you think BioShock is better than Bendy doesn’t mean that I should feel obligated to agree with you. Just let people enjoy Bendy and stop treating your opinion as fact. This game is a passion project
The Keeper introduction cracked me up. "My name is Audrey and I just want to go home. I don't mean to cause you any trouble." "FEISTY. ERRATIC. NOT LIKE OTHER -GIRLS- SUBJECTS!"
Henry said he’d almost forgotten his own name. I think they’re doing a Spirited Away thing where the longer you’re in the loop, you’re more likely to begin forgetting the real world. That’s my guess as to why Allison wasn’t going by her own name
Your character assessment reminds me of a storytelling skill that I think about a lot. Many amateur-level narratives make the mistake of "using up" characters like they are tools or mise en scene. I've seen this happen in lots of mediocre movies too where the writers just pull out a person from nowhere, use them to make some progress in the story, and discard them so we never see them again. It's really sad because everyone is supposed to have some kind of purpose, big or small, that is the most important to them and that's the thing that spices up a character. Even side characters that don't show up a lot can be so much more attractive with just one unique purpose. I think many characters in this series lacked that. Their purpose is either non-existent (i.e. the lost ones that gives you powers) or simple & presented in a crude way (e.g. all the evil voices with heavy metal vibe).
Having to just hope that you're near enough a hiding spot whenever the Ink Demon randomly shows up, or he'll insta-kill the player, is a genuinely _terrible_ gameplay mechanic.
I remember the only time I died to the Ink Demon was because I wasn't aware where the hiding spots were, after that I was always checking where the hiding spots were and was just constantly near them to dodge the Ink Demon and get a lot of time to do the boring puzzles
The Keepers voices reminded me of something and it was so frustrating but then it hit me, they sound like Daliks -side note I hope we get a compilation this year (from John or another source) for “Sincerely Evil”
I swear they even used the same font at Bioshock. Like damn, thought John was just talking about the atmosphere when he said it was trying to be like it.
Same music style as Bioshock too. The melancholic and eerie violins. Bendy is lucky Bioshock released such a long time ago (2007 I believe), so the primary audience of kids and teens have probably never heard of it.
If I knew that John would be playing this game, I legit would've waited till he uploaded a video to experience it for the first time with all the Grade A sass. Regardless, I'm super happy it's a 5 hour vid! These longform vids are super lovely, John. I was super excited to hear your commentary on this one as I too felt pretty ... meh about the first one. Thank you for putting in all that work with editing and such for this :D I hope 2023 is treating you well.
I remember someone had recommended Bendy to me back when it was an indie darling and all I remember from it was being massively disappointed by it's lack of substance past it's nice aesthetic...and then being immensely turned off by the marketing.
Remember the days when TH-camrs used to think we didn't want long videos?? Crazy kids. I'm in the heavens when I see John posting multiple hour long videos.
I really hope the developers take constructive criticism from people like John and apply them to their next game. I eagerly await John to play games I like because he actually cares about games. He gives constructive criticism and talks about how things can be better.
To get this out of the way before I watch, your hair is looking so great and thank you for the 5-hour vid! I really love these extended long plays you've dropped recently.
Thanks for the video, John! I just finished watching it, and I don't know if it was only me, but the Ink Demon gave me Alien Isolation's Xenomorph kind-of vibes. Not only in style, but also in the insta-death animations. Also that part where the enemy is lurking in the vent above the aisle? That's SO Alien Isolation!!!
It’s a pleasure to hear your rant about the game, please don’t cut it out of other videos if you ever go on a tangent 🙏🏻 I could 100% listen to you talk about what you like/dislike as it’s own video (podcast?-)
She never actually went by Allison in the original, if memory serves. Cause I remember "they call me Alice, but I'm no angel" as a line. Everyone just learned that she was Allison and the fandom called her it for simplicity
I was listening as I did something else, but "companioned" took me right out of what I was doing (my greatest jumpscare!). For the low, low price of a few Bendy plushies an hour, they could have hired an editor to look over the copy.
Thank you so much! I can't wait to watch it while doing some work. I can barely remember bendy so it will help. Sending lots of love and good vibes for you, Kimmy, friends, family, and doggo ❤️❤️❤️. Stay healthy and have tons of fun!
5 hours of John? Yes, please! Man, as Drew had his little Kingdom Hearts speech at the end, I thought my eyes would roll out of my head XD Also...Bioshock 2 > Infinite
thank you for pointing out the Dishonored similarities as well, lol. That was driving me crazy watching this game, especially when they introduced the glowing-hand-mark-that-gives-you-powers thing. And the way the characters are animated versus the first game- I think they took a lot of inspiration from Dishonored NPCs, but completely missed it on execution. Much like everything else.
You are really "bendyng" your back with this one! Damn 5 hours of of straight gameplay, I don't even wanna know how long it really took to get through.
"I'm 2 months late"... Well I've *never* heard of this until your video showed up in my notification tab. Guess this will be a passive experience while I play something else! 💗😸💗
To answer your question about smoking in the 70's, while there were always people aware of the health risks, it was ubiquitous. In restaurants, on buses, airplanes, hospital waiting rooms, you could smoke anywhere and if you complained about it you were the one looked upon like you were crazy.

I'm sorry, really congrats to the creators because this is better than anything I'll do in my entire life...but...this was a 5hs video and I felt like absolutely nothing happened. It felt like a nothing game. It was worth it for the John commentary tho
@@blockotheblock5672 Literally the first character in the game that you meet talks like a haunted mansion guest. He talks like an Old Man Jenkins. I assume you watched the video, right? Yes, the cartoon horror game SHOULD be goofy and cartoonish. But it has to use that to its advantage. It is silly in areas where it shouldn't be (like again, the beginning segment where you aren't even in the cartoon world yet), and not silly in areas it should. There are ways to use whimsy to its advantage in horror, and this game doesn't really do a lot with that.
This was a nostalgic throwback for me, I watched every chapter of the first game on John’s channel as soon as he uploaded them in 2017. The one thing I liked about the first game was how they implemented Allison and Boris, so it was disappointing that you barely saw them in this one and the only real interaction was….. being able to pet Boris… very awkwardly. And of course, the overall boring game was made entertaining thanks to John. I appreciate the amount of feedback he gave at the end too, I really do like to hear John’s opinions about the content he plays and always look forward to it at the end of his videos lol.
>Soylent Green My family has a tradition of watching that movie every year on Thanksgiving. In-universe the story of the movie takes place in the year 2022, so last year we dyed all the food green to celebrate... I threw it all up the next day but it was so much fun! So nice to see someone else reference it since I'm usually the one explaining to people what the movie is.
Your truth is super appreciated no matter what. Sorry to hear about your loss, much positivity to you & yours. Bendy isn't great but better, take that how you will, than this second one. I know the actual game dev is said to have made a Meat Mascot schlock horror game for free you really should try it. Much love, be safe.
In regards to the smoking in the artist's rest area being "unsavory"... you are right that smoking wasn't widely regarded as unsavory by the masses, so my only thoughts are either the dev(s) didn't (care to?) do their research, or when they say "smoking" they didn't mean tobacco...
I tried to watch a playthrough of this on release but couldn't because of no subtitles on the audio logs.. I'm so suprised there's still absolutely nothing for that months later?? Subtitles are the most basic accessibility feature and insanely easy to implement (especially as they literally already have a system for them). There's no excuse for that :/ At least you have automatic subtitles enabled so I thank you for that (especially as you don't speak over them meaning it can be picked up easily)! EDIT: Also you keep saying it feels bioshock-y lol, ink machine literally copied bioshock so ofc it has the same feeling.
@@challah_back_femme9857 It's mad though because there's literally free plugins for all the major engines and it's dead easy to make it for custom engines as well (especially considering basically all the studios have already proven they can do subtitles). Looking at how far Playstation is pushing accessibility in games, it's just really disappointing that other studios are regressing
Ngl no subs for a game is an immediate deal breaker for me. Not only is it hard for me to understand spoken English, but I've got an auditory processing disorder. I like actually knowing what I'm doing in a game.
If one goes into the tab where these audio logs are saved, there's not only text logs all written out for each but also a play button one can individually press to replay said audio logs alongside them, thus being like "subtitles" you can read as they play out.
I for one was really grateful when you decided to stop listening to the keepers - they were driving me insane, too. And why all evil characters talk so slow? I'd say that's the most evil thing they did. Continuing the point of the over the top evil characters, children definitely are not idiots, they can tell a character is evil even if they don't sound like the evilest people that ever existed. If I try to think about my childhood, it's easy to think about some of the most memorable evil characters who were also really interesting and appealing (coincidentally they tended to be also queer coded, but that's another discussion). So this extreme dumbing down for children is something that I usually don't appreciate honestly
Totally agree. I've seen more nuanced, well-rounded villains in media written for _toddlers_ and this thing is apparently aiming at early teens?? This isn't about making it age-accessible, this is treating your audience like morons. If I was a kid trying to play this, viewing it as a game aimed at me, I would find it infuriatingly patronising.
4:48:10 names in the credits of the shining stars of this project, the visual artists. There’s some other individual talent in there, but the visual aspects are (in my opinion) the only thing that makes this game/series unique. :-)
The argument that “this is for kids, so it has to be heavy handed” feels so much like a cope. Kids are smarter than they are giving credit for. Kids being dumb = I don’t have to actually try and make good art? Absolutely hate it.

The fact that Rooster Teeth was involved, the voice acting direction doesn't surprise me then. The way the characters spoke (atleast the villains) definitely gave me vibes of how RT directed their other projects. I recall when Transformers WoC (Netflix series) got trashed on for how awful the voice direction was, the director was salty when talking about it at a TFcon panel (there's a full length of it on the TFcon YT channel). It was slow or just spoke in speeches or other older works sounded emotionless. Here, they ham it up A LOT but the characters in BATDR sound too simliar. I do like Wilson's voice & I feel like Ink Demon Bendy could've toned down the growl-like voice just a tad. If the subtitles weren't there, I wouldn't be able to understand some of what he was saying. I do think this game is atleast an improvement of the last, but I hope they do more with 3rd one & do take risks.

If you try to attack him, he just cartoonishly bends and twists his body to dodge your attacks, or he causes his face to flatten out from the strike and he just reinflates himself by blowing into his thumb. @@JillLulamoon man it would have been cool if this was what the game was like
It's also strange when Audrey (or any other character) can't pass through a small space or through grates.
I’ll definitely watch the vids by Chris! Thank you for the recommendation!! Love info series/vids like that.
The gameplay for Bendy is jus terrible. No other weapons, just melee and swinging.
Thank you and it's what I suspected as well. I appreciate your writing this. You rock!
Best recommendation by far is to just play Bioshock.
Even by todays standards, Bioshock is still a masterpiece
"Do you ever get a sound byte stuck in your head?" Holy shit, YES. There was a time when I had Atlas from Bioshock saying "Nice work, boyo!" stuck in my head for like two weeks. It drove me bananas, as much as I love that game and quote.

Well the game does mention with the teleport ability that you can "uncover secrets"
5 hour video??? Thanks for treating us so well john. Much love and support
(Interesting fact, about 90% silent film/animation is lost or destroyed and about 75% of those lost films are permanently destroyed).
i am losing it over the time frame, this feels like what you'd get if you asked someone born in 2015 what they thought life was like in the 70s

One of the things I appreciate the most about your videos is the voice acting; it's always top notch. Sometimes it's bad and it makes it even better. Great video!

I think he's said before that for now he just prefers to make long YT videos instead of multiple parts because they actually perform better? Don't quote me on that, but pretty sure he's mentioned he prefers to make long videos instead of multi-chunk series. Maybe in a YT announcement video...?

Tbh, the "loop" isn't an excuse for repetitive story beats. There are plenty of games and stories out there that take place in some sort of setting like that, or play with themes like that, or even just play with expectations and tropes along the course of the series-- that do so in much more clever ways. It's not enough to repeat a scene and go "weird, this feels familiar!" The key is doing something clever with how it's both similar and different.
Like Metal Gear Solid 2
Man When They Cry is great
@@rudolfambrozenvtuber Seriously.

I know in the current canon that wouldn't make sense; they aren't ACTUAL cartoons ripped off the page, they're simply made to resemble them....but it would be a really cool feature imo.
that sounds like way too much work for this game dev lmao
@@rat_grandpa not really. Considering they are really good at art.
Yeah, they don't really do much with the theme or aesthetic. It doesn't go beyond just looking like old cartoons. It's all very superficial.
That's what it should've been from the get go, it makes sense to utilize in this setting

Throwing a fountain pen nib first into a ceramic mug is the true horror of this game
Thank you for that.
I'd like to see John replay the bioshock series. Would be a great bit of nostalgia a decade later.
Guess what
John was pointing it out, but Audrey's weird non-reactions are kind of jarring.

John, you're so right about people mistaking you for pessimistic, because I thought the Quarry was gonna be bad just from the dialogue alone, but in hindsight it was much better than that Evil McMansion Dark Pictures episode.
At 32:14 the code 451 is a reference to the first code in every Bioshock and System Shock game. This game wants to be like Bioshock so bad.
I noticed that too. It was probably meant as a cute reference but considering how mediocre Dark Revival is it's almost a little offensive.
This game is Diet Bioshock with terrible combat. Shit, System Shock 2 combat is better than this.

After how disappointing the first game ended my hopes aren't high for this but a 5 hour vid from John, is always a win
The "sincerely evil" from min 22 got me, I loved those notes
3:33 “i forget how much this game wants to be bioshock” oh my dear friend john, the game has only just begun
The Keepers voices reminded me of something and it was so frustrating but then it hit me, they sound like Daliks
-side note I hope we get a compilation this year (from John or another source) for “Sincerely Evil”
I swear they even used the same font at Bioshock. Like damn, thought John was just talking about the atmosphere when he said it was trying to be like it.
Same for the objective sound effect. It's the exact same one Bioshock uses. :/ They didn't even try to hide it.

Bendy is lucky Bioshock released such a long time ago (2007 I believe), so the primary audience of kids and teens have probably never heard of it.

Yes, the cartoon horror game SHOULD be goofy and cartoonish. But it has to use that to its advantage. It is silly in areas where it shouldn't be (like again, the beginning segment where you aren't even in the cartoon world yet), and not silly in areas it should. There's no excuse for that :/ At least you have automatic subtitles enabled so I thank you for that (especially as you don't speak over them meaning it can be picked up easily)!
EDIT: Also you keep saying it feels bioshock-y lol, ink machine literally copied bioshock so ofc it has the same feeling.
game designers lately seem to be disappointingly bad at subtitles lately
@@challah_back_femme9857 It's mad though because there's literally free plugins for all the major engines and it's dead easy to make it for custom engines as well (especially considering basically all the studios have already proven they can do subtitles).
Oh boy, can't wait for this 5hr video experience and I'm excited it's John taking us on this journey! 🙌 You're sassy and fun commentary is a treat to be a part of. Thanks for the upload. 😀
We need more long videos like this, they’re so much better than parts.
I disagree. Falling asleep and letting the entire thing play is the worst. I wake up not knowing where I’m meant to be.
@@paynexkiller I mean that’s more of a personal problem. Maybe don’t watch it before going to bed or if you feel yourself getting tired turn it off🤷🏽♀️
@@paynexkiller bro i thought i was the only one to fall asleep during long videos, good to know im not alone
22:00 sincerely EVIL haha that John's phrase always makes me laugh glad he stick to it
The fact that Rooster Teeth was involved, the voice acting direction doesn't surprise me then.
