The 1997 Tournoi de France was a friendly international football tournament held in France in early June 1997 as a warm-up to the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was the best because he literally had everything. Speed, strength, agility, control, skill and one hell of a shot. Before his injuries he was unstoppable.

He never said that he never trained and in fact he said he did train way too much in a way that didn't fit his characteristics, he blames his injuries on the way that he was trained back then and how sports fitness was still developing compared to today. He said all that in a recent interview for a Brazilian podcast channel. You never read or watched him talking about it the way you described.
I get chills seeing all the legends playing in that match alone. Ronaldo was doing what Messi does to players difference is Ronaldo was doing it againts other legends.

A monster can't be stopped. Defenders tried the same with Pele, it didn't work. Some tried with CR7 during his peak years as well, didn't work. Ronaldo lost 3-0 to France at that time, not so good after all.

I don't like to compare players of different eras but let's put it like this: If Ramos, for example, have had his peak years during the end of the 90s and beginning of the 2000s I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be considered as one of the best defenders of all time. Playing with and getting destroyed against by some of the best players of all time toughened him up and made him the player he's today in an era where football isn't as competitive as it had been years ago. You guys are so biased… Messi is easily the best of all time, he controls a game. Step overs and skill R9 is the best ever but that’s one category out of 100s in football. I think R9 is the second best striker ever behind Pele but that’s as far as I’d go. Visually R9 is arguable with Messi, Maradona and Ronaldinho but that’s not a fact. You guys mention that at 22 he had more goals than Messi, but that’s because a lot of those goals came in weak brazilian leagues and also weaker European leagues. Not to mention messi played as a winger in the early years in the best league in the world at the time. Messi at 19 was scoring Hattricks against Real Madrid playing as a winger LOL!!!! I understand the nostalgia and how amazing R9 was but let’s not make this into a fact because it far from it… Messi is close to 7 balon dors, 800 goals, 6 golden boots, 4 playmaker of the year and he’s not done yet….
