Almost as if he was made for a video game or something. Also a little bit too individualistic. He was in the Netherlands for only a very short time, but within a few matches it became abundantly clear that he was way too big for our modest league. It was greatly appreciated by the public that he still put effort into learning the language and even managed to do interviews in Dutch. As far as I am concerned Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima the greatest Brazilian who ever stood on a football pitch.
to this day i still remember back in the 90s, when i saw a "casual" uefa cup game between leverkusen and eindhoven. in that day leverkusen had players like ulf kirsten, paolo sergio, lehnhoff and the amazing bernd schuster. they won 5-4 but boy, the reason i still remember that game was that young eindhoven striker. it's hard to describe what it felt like. maybe that was the same feeling when people back in the day discovered the first rock and roll or punk song or when all wheel drive hitting the world rally championship and brought it into a complete new era. this guy was on another level. there was simply nothing he wasn't good at. like an adult playing with kids. but this time the adult was 16-17 (?) and the older players looked like they're already retired for years. yes, it was this amazing. i have seen thousand of football games since that. but this one still is stuck in my head. what an amazing player. later in the career it seems that his own body couldn't keep up with his own skills. he came back from a long injury. changed his style of play and still was the best.there have been some crazy good players after him. but i'm sure everyone who watched football back in the day never felt that magic again. and the master of it was that guy from brazil. smiling with a gap in his front teeth which made him even more "normal" and took my sympathy.
He was and remains the ultimate Striker. He could literally do anything....and never failed under pressure. His technique, dribbling, fast sprints, headers, bicycle kicks, volleys, first touch....and he wasn't a ego like Neymar sometimes tends to be....he would pass the ball when his teammates stood a better chance to score. There's other strikers like Marco Van Basten, Gerd Müller, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski, Jean-Pierre Papin, Jürgen Klinsmann, George Whea or Romario....they might even scored more goals. But none of them were the complete package. R9 was a mixture of Messi and Christiano Ronaldo....evolved to play as a center forward.
