It really blows my mind how Lemmy functioned at the level he did on that shit. I have no experience or interest in amphetamines, but most people who end up hooked on it look and sound insane. How he held it together until 70, I'll never know.

@@AntisocialSka1 i think you might find his secret is he played in a swing style but fast, 16ths on hi hat for some songs. We are Motorhead and we play rock and roll, sort of gives it away.
Most of his time did in fact, its around the late 80's when that got lost .
Even thoses early black and death metal band had thoses swing influences and swag ( Venom, Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel's Abomination of desolation, Possessed ...)

Original guitarist Larry Wallis recently died, so that makes 5 Motorhead members who've kicked the bucket.
Phil was a top guy and a phenomenal drummer. Without his contribution to music there would be no Metallica or Slayer or any metal as we know it today. RIP "Philthy"!

***** If you want to piss off someone who identfies himself as punk that question. Punk is a youth subculture (and punk rock a music genre) and when it emerged it was basically characterized by anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian views, they fancied themselves as nonconformists and expressed it trough their outfits and attitude. When you readf a bit about the roots you can understand how and why the culture emerged but it quickly became as conformistic as any other youth culture. Just look at the whole scene police and the poser name calling among punks. Quizz any of these guys what's it all about and don't let them give you the runaround but nail them down and you'll realize they have no clue and there's no substance to it.

Do you know that kids today, who consider themselves to be "punks" (I call it kiddie-punk, you know that "Green Day/ Emo/metrosexual crap), pay hundreds of euros or dollars to maintain their style? Chlothes, boots, pins, hair spray and that expensive shit. They are victims of consumerism and they don't get it. They are just posers with no individual standpoint. Like everybody who follows a trend. Sheep. Greg Graffin once said, you don't need a fucking mohawk to be punk. It's about attitude and how you view your life and the world around you.
Yeah I know and I also understand very well how such trends work and the kids tick in that regard because after all I once was a conformistic kid who desperately tried to fit in (happened to be the punk/anarcho scene in my case) too until I matured and started to realize that I had no real inner convictions but merely parroted the blabber of those around me and behaved like I thought a punk had to behave. I also realized what a hypocrite I'd been since for a while I used to run around with self-proclaimed anarchists who fancied themselves revolutionaries and avantgarde, they smashed some McDonalds window and thought they'd done something to better the world and drank cheap imported beer while doing so. Almost all still lived at home and received money from their parents or were on welfare or received other benefits from the evil capitalistic state. See we all could give you handily a list full of antis, we were against this and against that but we couldn't tell you what kind of society we longed for, we lacked the pros so to speak and when asked about that resorted to vague ambigous statements. As for punk, frankly I don't really get what it means or stands for. Like I said I know it's history and how it evolved over time but when someone self-identifies as "punk" in 2016 what does it mean (I mean other than a fashion statement and listening to a certain genre)? An anti-authoritarian stance is pretty clear and doesn't need much explaining but anti-establishment is already quite vague imo. Or when you say "it's about attitude", what does that really mean? It would be enough and much more clear to state I'm an individualist or a person who strives to be an autonomous being (in the sense of Kantian ethics) instead of saying I'm punk.
Thinking about the origins of the whole punk music scene and how kids viewed the Pistols as such rebels back then I just remembered something funny. I'm a huge admirer of author W.S. Burroughs and in one docu I watched about him Jello Biafra recounted how he once attended this literature convention with many so-called Beat authors back in the Seventies. The Pistols God save the Queen had been recently released and they became hugely popular so someone at that convention asked Burroughs what he thought about the Pistols and that song. He replied "Well I don't get what should be so shocking or rebellious when kids with colored spiky hair perform a song where they sing God save the Queen. If you ask me about my feelings towards that old cunt, my parole would be "Bugger the Queen" and according to Biafra he shouted it repeatedly and the whole crowd joined in and would chant "Bugger the Queen"! And that parole came from a 63 old man. Just a very telling episode about the whole punk phenomena if you ask me.

Burroughs was an intelligent, old man. And also funny. Just as Jello Biafra is. Reading Jello's lyrics, even today, make me happy and frightend at the same time. So cynical with a very twisted kind of humour. The Dead Kennedys did more to my upbringing than the Sex Pistols ever could. Maybe I am too young for the Pistols (I'm 46) and I didn't get the impact they had on society. But even in the 80s they always seemed to be more about image and fashion than music, you know, like the shadow of the big Sex Pistols. Never impressed me. There are so many great punk bands out there, but it's always the Pistols that made the news and got the fame.Talking about non-conformity, ey? I was never a fan. I always prefered bands like the Dead Boys, the Damned and of course the Misfits. Or crazy shit like the Cramps. The Pistols were more like poster boys than musicians. At least to me.
We knew Phil very well, he came to see us play at Safari Sams in LA and we recalled many crazy nights in London over the years. Much of it cannot be repeated in public 😂 He was truly a lovely man, very talented and as can be seen here, absolutely down to Earth. ❤️ MUCH LOVED AND DESRLY MISSED ❤️ x

Yeah, he is imitating Charly Chaplin. But some words (like in Chaplins speech) are german. Like "grosse "Mädchen...Glocken?" I think he means big tits. "Mädchen" means "girl". "Glocken" means "bells". And then "assen Hosen" "Hosen" means trousers. "ass trousers" :-) So it makes no real sense but in a crazy way it does. :-) Because he just don't care and I think that's what Metal or Rock is about. No definitions.

One of a kind and sorely missed. His name is rarely mentioned when talking about great drummers but he was. Part of the original lineup, all gone. RIP Philthy Phil!
Phil Taylor was one of the nicest, funniest of people, you could have wished to have met. I used to drink with Phil, we had some crazy nights and days!

A bit crazy at times, but a great character, and an absolutely phenomenal drummer. Phil's speed and accuracy was totally astonishing. It still leaves me speechless even today when watching and listening to Phil drumming on all Motorhead tracks.

In those days, they weren't just great muso's, they were great characters. The new generation coming up has nothing like this. Phil, Lemmy, Eddie, and many others like you - you are sorely missed.
So true. The current crop of 'rock stars' couldn't be more boring and straight laced. And most of them were already born into privilege. The British stars that came up during the 60s/70s were dirt poor and that's what gave them their character.
Totally agree, The so called "Rockers" today have no character, they may have the hair, the piercings, the tattoos but lameass character... Guys back then we're a one of a kind. Having character has a lot to do with the environment you come from. In Phils case Leeds in tough working class Northern England, oh and the drugs and booze help too

+leon bushnell this dude died before Lemmy. He's also the first drummer to use a double bass. Most musicians had to use speed to keep up with the hectic pace. Here's one to flip your shit. I saw Reba McEntire when she was musically in her prime. We had backstage passes for autographs. As she's signing, Narvel puts a pill in her mouth and gives her a drink and she becomes an autograph signing fool. I would have bet she signed 1000 autographs in 15 minutes.

@MIKE J You are probably right in regards to the vast majority of drug abusers, but in his case i can't help but sense he really lived life on the fast lane right until then end, enjoyed it, and wouldn't have traded this way of living for a casual life, without all the rock n roll and drug excesses. Not glorifying it or anything, but some people are just bound for such an existence, and in Mr Phil Taylor's 'RIP' case, he ended up being one of the luckier ones who could support the Motorhead lifestyle without ending up in Destitution and Despair.

RIP Phil. I liked Eddie's story on how he first met Phil when he was a foreman doing construction on a houseboat. He said Phil had shown up to work early and was zipping around. Eddie said his eyes were bulging out on stalks as he'd been up for days and he flat out told Eddie that. His blunt honesty impressed Eddie. (Who was a helluva storyteller.)

For the first 18 months, he only had a snare drum. Think about that for a moment. These old school players are good because they were forced to build up technique incrementally.

The producer of the Overkill album knew just how effective Phil's drumming was - almost every song on that album has a strong drum fill or faded up beat at the start - listen to Philthy's intro to Stay Clean - fast, precise, perfectly controlled, seems to be four or five different techniques over five or six bars of free time. Then the drum intro to Capricorn, rising up in the mix to full volume. He seemed to combine the effortless creativity and inventiveness of a John Bonham or an Ian Paice but at more unpredictable and explosive rate of knots!? It's hard to sum up Phil Taylor's drumming but he knew his stuff - you can bet your bottom dollar he was studying the likes of Buddy Rich drum scores as if his life depended on it and in the maelstrom of the late 1970s Punk rock revolution, Motorhead's attitude and style made them the perfect bedfellows for the likes of the Damned and the Pistols and gave the green light to the fledgling NWOBHM that spawned Iron Maiden then Thrash Metal and beyond. RIP Phil, Eddie & Lemmy!

Very interesting vid. Both Lemmy and Phil had a habit of telling interviewers that their questions were stupid. All three of the classic lineup were such characters. So interesting. Having listened to many of the interviews, I get the impression that Fast Eddie was the most affable in nature.
Such a nice Fella! I was still a 'pUnK rOcKeR' (still am) when 'Ace Of Spades' was released and we gravitated to this amazing band, and Phil looked so menacing on the photos of the day, which was really cool, but as we can see he had a really soft centre! God Bless you Man, thankyou so much for the tunes! Have a pint of 'Holy Water' with 'Eddie' and of course LEMMY! Tell them THEY are 'ADORED'! dx
