    People are not wrong when they say that today's players are better. They absolutely are. But these legends' greatness is not as much about their skills (although they were very skilled for their time), it's the fact that they are the pioneers. The game wouldn't even exist today without these guys. They deserve much respect.

      Josh Landis yeah whatever they can pioneer all they want it doesnt automatically put them in a top 10 of all time list which is supposed to be based on SKILL. Bill Russell is probably one of the most overrated players of all time.

      Dribbling was hard.. because anything could be a carry or a Palming.
      Now I see players Palming the ball and walking in front of the ref like it's nothing.
      Offensive fouls are rare.
      And you couldn't even back up players with your back in the post.
      Assists were only counted if it was a pass to a guy near the rim in front of you..
      It was hard.

    • @deez9805
      @deez9805 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea the dribbling, shot contests, and man to man rules were all key factors. In this era, individual scoring was purposefully made difficult because people (Red Auerbach) didn’t want one guy being able to beat five. Respect to Bill.. but the real 3 Kings of the 60s are Jerry, Wilt, and Oscar. Everything that dominates the game today, they already did it. They were the first. The real blue prints to our sport. Other guys simply took what they started and built upon it

    you can argue about whether the players of the 60s or the 70s were even athletic, or would have been athletic enough to play in the modern era, but one thing Jerry West had that would translate into any era is his efficiency scoring the ball. Averaged shooting 47.4% for his career, 57% true shooting percentage, similar efficiency to guys like Chris Paul, Damian Lillard and Demar Derozan. Even if you were to say Jerry West wouldn't be athletic enough to be a star in the modern era, his shot alone is enough to say he could at least play in any era.

  • @digitalgr8ness
    @digitalgr8ness 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    One of the main things you see here is actual dribbling. Back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and even the 80's to some degree, you couldn't palm or carry the ball. You had to straight up and down dribble. Those were the rules back then. It was illegal to carry the ball. That's why you never see (what we now consider) athletic cross-over moves or so-called "superior" ball handling skills back in that era. Believe me, it's actually harder not to carry the ball than it is to carry. These athletes were disciplined. Moreover, every era is a product of its rules. If the 50's and 60's athletes were allowed to carry the ball, they would have equally good handles. When the NBA stopped calling palming penalties (starting in the mid 80's into the 90's), you saw more freedom for creative dribbling techniques, crossovers and other moves. Michael Jordan perhaps single handedly helped usher that era in. He regularly crossed over and carried the ball. You can't cross over without palming or carrying the ball to some degree. If Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson or any player from the modern era went back in time and played in Jerry West's era, they would be called for palming every time they handled the ball. Different rules and different eras don't necessarily mean better players. Each era is a product of its own rules and should be judged accordingly. Today's players might be stronger and more athletic, but that doesn't make them smarter or fundamentally better.

      Even then, I mean if you have a ame with modern guys today with guys like West and Russell, if you have the rule with dribbling like in the 60s with the ability for players to shoot with the three-point line, I still pick a team with Lebron, KD, and Curry. Curry and KD would just be better shooters than most of the guys in this era. Look at Lebron, he is always been about his quickness at getting inside along with strength. I agree these old guys could play and penetrate like Frazier and West, but Lebron has done the same thing for over a decade with tons of atheltic ass players. He would've been fine doing his bulldozing in this era.
      I agree guys like Wilt, West, and Russell would still be great and amazing in todays game because they deserve that respect. I do think West could be very similar to someone like Westbrook or Steve Nash and Russell could be like Jokic today or Tim Duncan.
      I just still believe though that there are legit arguments about how a lot of these old guys would have their strengths limited if they played today. It definitely could happen with guys like Lebron or KD, but their skills seem to be good enough to translate as well.

    Here’s what no one considers when watching this era.
    1. Medicine and evolution of Sports Science.
    2. The shoes and flooring.
    3. The hoop.
    4. The rules, like stricter traveling violations, no 3 second in the paint, you can’t carry the ball, you have to have your palm almost above the ball.
    I won’t sit here and say this era is better than now, but you have to understand that if you take any player today and have them grow up back then, they would not be able to do most of their moves. They can’t crossover and palm/carry the ball like they do today, no harden step back, and no 3s.
    You try and play a game with those rules and tell me it doesn’t make it harder.
    Back then the rules were made to make it difficult to score, today the rules were changed to make the game of basketball easier.
    This is all documented btw. Look it up 😇
