"Ed... _his name is ed."_ is genuinely, unironically the best coming out I've ever seen. Simple, genuine, and filled with love. Both from stede, and from Mary. The _immediate_ hug from her is so. Intense to me. No words needed, just a firm, intense, _I'm so happy for you._

Truth. I myself am not gay, but I regularly get annoyed at being queerbaited, or having the things where creators pretty much say "it's gay representation! Praise us!" like Disney gave a blink and you miss it lesbian kiss in "Star Wars"(cut out for overseas audiences)or the little nudges and winks like in "Jungle Cruise" or the live action "Beauty and the Beast". I love when we're allowed to reach the conclusion ourselves and not be faked out.

I love that even though Stede has made Mary unhappy in the past, they are able to move past that once he too comes to terms with the fact that them being together is only causing pain to both of them. And once he does, Mary is nothing but supportive, wishing for him to find the same happiness she did with Doug. And when Stede admits to his love for Ed, she just smiles and hugs him, because ultimately she still loves him, not as a romantic partner but as a friend and a considerable part of her past and his happiness matters to her. And I love how despite the fact that Stede is the protagonist and the person we root for, the show doesn't paint Mary as his antagonist. We actually agree that he was in the wrong when he tried to force her back into their unhappy marriage and we get angry at him for doing that. I'm so happy they ultimately got to understand each other and have that moment of reconciliation before they moved on with their lives.

Then talking to Mary he let's all that repression and guilt go and realizes for the first time, this need for Ed is love. I really appreciate the flashbacks in this scene because it really reinforces that, yes, the show has always been romantic as fuck when Ed was in the cast even though a lot of viewers didn't clue in until the last few episodes (I blame queerbaiting in other shows). Upon rewatch of all the episodes it's so obvious that Ed was pretty much attracted to Stede from the moment he was first told about him by Izzy and Stede was mostly oblivious until here

i'm glad they didn't make mary bonnet into some sort of villain, instead they showed mary & stede having a conversation about their relationship.
they both had done wrong and hurt each other throughout the marriage. but in the end, they could let go of each other without any grudge or something like that. mary even accepted and embraced stede when he told her that he has found his love, which is ed.
clearly, this is fiction, but i'm happy they show the importance of communication in a relationship even if it's broken beyond repair. this is one of my top 3 favorite scene in ofmd.

This scene is amazing & I love what they did with Mary so much. So many shows would have just used her character to represent some boring domestic prison the main character is desperate to escape & then forget about her, and I love that she’s so much more than that.
Instead of framing it as exciting pirate life vs everyday drudgery, they show her living a vibrant life as a mom, artist & member of her local community and they’re able to hold Stede accountable for abandoning his family on a whim while also having it work out for the best for everyone. It’s just nice to see a show drop the poor women & children who were left behind thing and show them as their own people.
Also Mary & Ed absolutely need to meet and talk shit about how mr “lets talk it out” thinks running away is a great solution when it comes to dealing with his own feelings, lol

These two have such a rough past, but the moment he says this, it's like a wave of realization and empathy rushes over mary instantly. It's like the answer to a question they've had in their minds for years has finally been answered for both of them. this scene was so painfully beautiful. in this case, i think stede may genuinely gay (not bisexual or something else). and i think mary knew too, because in the beginning she admitted she knew they never would have married each other/they could try to fancy a life w each other the best they can. and the way she just ... smiles. damn.

    • @jazmindodds
      @jazmindodds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Exactly! And he couldn’t not because anything she did, but because he is gay and it is just not how he is wired, even with all of society and his upbringing preventing him from ever coming to terms with this fact. Mary’s smile and joyful embrace really says not only acceptance, but also clears up so much, shows this wasn’t *her* doing, and now they can fully move past this baggage brought by him returning- basically just massive relief as well as acceptance and love, which is so wonderfully what Stede needed in this moment.
Like, this is a gay story, one that’s slightly less realistic, but still means so much and reflects a very real part of our experience. If he were bi, this really wouldn’t work so well as it does, bc as you say, Mary was willing to work for the marriage, wasn’t framed antagonistically, so what else would be a realistic but protagonist-worthy motivation- certainly not leaving just because he didn’t like her as a wife.

Honestly, I'm so glad they had Stede go back to Mary. It shows a really important bit of representation, with all of Stede's flashbacks earlier in the show having kind of shown longing. His regret is because he didn't lock himself to the strict social expectations that he was supposed to, and thought he was ruining lives because of it. Something that plenty of us can relate to. Having him not only be accepted, but his family thriving without him, was honestly so relieving. Good closure that sucking it up hurts those around you as well as yourself.

I love this moment not just because Stede gets context for his feelings about Ed and Mary gets to enthuse about her chosen person, but because this gives Mary some reassurance that, no, really nothing would have saved this marriage, and they are both happier outside of it.

I love this show and this scene, i think its amazing that she supports him for being gay since at this time period it was very rare to find people who supported lgbtq+ and the hug she gives him to me represents that shes telling him to go be with the person he loves

A show that not only legitimizes but also celebrates different forms of romantic love, not just heterosexual relationships? I thought we weren't allowed to do that, the federal government surely doesn't think so

This honestly helped me come to grips with the LGBT community. I don't care what people do in their personal lives (or at least I thought I did) but admittedly there were many scenes in this show that made me uneasy, not disgusted but slightly uncomfortable with what I was seeing. I think this was a combination of this kind of representation being unheard of in Hollywood, the false advertising within the marketing and my Christian upbringing of which I no longer consider myself apart of. This show felt like The Office or Parks and Recreation, in the sense that I felt like I was watching a group of close friends supporting each other. For sure made me more open minded towards those who aren't your typical straight male or females.

I'd like to once again give this show HUGE props for its representation; I've seen too many "coming out" scenes that are super, over the top emotional, where the lgbt person is really struggling to reveal this part about themselves, and like...those scenes are good, if they're written well, and if they suit the context, but this one...I dunno. There's something about it. The focus isn't on the fact that Stede is "coming out"; it's more about his love for Ed. The whole big realization isn't that he's in love with a *man*, it's just that he's in love. And that is so sweet.
    I love them.

I just LOVE Mary as a character. Her and Spanish Jackie are the only women in the cast of recurring characters (the others being men and an enby) so it was really cool to have a look into her nuanced perspective, fully informed by the socialistation she experienced as a woman. Plus as soon as you see her start to thrive being herself you can see how great of a person she truly is - kind, intelligent and accepting. It's also so frustrating to see Australian characters being played by non-Australians (it's an incredibly hard accent to get right without sounding too stereotypical!) so as an Aussie seeing this cool Aussie character was very fun to see.

People always point to the kiss scene as the most transformative but this will always be the defining moment of the show for me. It’s kindness, it’s release, it’s joy, it’s gentle defiance, all in one minute. As someone living closeted in an unaccepting country this scene and everything stede stands for in the moment makes my heart sing
