You know what, I'm going to adopt this thought process instead of being upset because god dammit I wasn't expecting this show to break my heart but honestly everything Taika is in, no matter if it's a comedy, seems to break my heart.
This scene is SO nuanced. If you look at Stede’s reaction to Ed’s proposal, he looks happy, but still extremely apprehensive about the plan; Ed makes him happy, and that’s what counts, right? But when Admiral Badminton kidnaps and accuses Stede of ruining everything, especially Ed, the greatest pirate alive, that apprehension is given a voice. He ruined Ed’s life and will ruin it further if he stays with him, so he runs. This scene was MASTERFULLY played by Rhys and Taika, who’ve added so many layers to their performance. Just incredible work.

I'm sorry he messed up the timing but it was important for him to go back to Mary and especially the kids. It he helps the story they were better without him
This scene is both so sweet and so incredibly heartbreaking. You can see Stede's doubt and hesitation here. Maybe if Chauncey hadn't nabbed him, he would have been at the dock, but I think he always would have had to eventually face his guilt over his family and his fear that he's "ruining" Edward too somehow. And god, Ed. The pauses as he makes his confession, the way he can't look at Stede until he's said it, the way his mouth barely moves when he says "you." It just feels so real to that terrifying moment of confessing to someone and hoping they reciprocate. And he just looks so hopeful and joyful, more youthful and happy than we've really ever seen him (though I'm sure the lack of beard helps there) but he's so happy to finally be able to shed the Blackbeard armor and just be Ed, and be with Stede, he's totally blind to Stede's hesitance, and seeing how happy he is just hurts knowing that he's going to get his heart broken.
I think season two isn't likely to BEGIN with a happy reunion and all misunderstandings forgiven and straightened out. Probably that will be the tension of the entire season, and it will be AGONY. But I really do hope that in the end they will give us the resolution we hope for, history be damned.
best kiss in tv history?? at least the best one in a very long time,, the build up, the apprehension, the awkwardness, the confusion, but the pure and utter joy with both of them… plus this coupled with stede’s later “i hope you find that some day/i think i have” scene with mary is just…. GOD this is my favorite show ever, thank you thank you thank you to everyone involved from the creator to the writers to rhys and taika its all so wonderful i genuinely never could have wished for something better and i am so happy :””)

She says that they only have one life, and here he's choosing a different one, to restart it with Ed. Yes, he has reservations. Yes, he's not sure he wants to leave his own life behind. But he's choosing to start over with Ed anyway because that's who makes him happy.
This makes me 😢 cry. Ed is sooo hopeful, he wants him to know after all they have been through, but doesn’t find the words easily. The kiss is romantic and sweet. Rhys plays that confusion, but also in love thing perfectly. Taika is so compelling in this, I cry thinking about how this turns out 😭

Fortunately, despite all their screwed-up baggage, they are very kind and generous to each other and will work it out over time. I mean, Stede forgave Ed for planning to murder him, for god's sake. But Ed may more need time to defrost since he's so sensitive and easily wounded.

My personal guess is that either it's because he wanted to feel Stede's face on his without whiskers in the way, or because he was literally trying to unstick himself from the definitional black beard that he was so trapped by, OR, Taika Watiti just got really sick of the limited facial expressions he could make while wearing spirit gum to adhere the face wig to his chin.
Meanwhile all it makes me think of is that the actors had to either hold the kiss for a decent stretch of time. Or kiss multiple times for different shots.
