Hello my friend, Im so glad you're doing Portishead and Massive Attack, two underrated and extremely influential artists from the 90s. They've shaped what music has sounded like since then til now, but haven't really received the credit they deserve.

@@joshs8685 Please share how often they’ve been cited as being influential because they’re rarely mentioned from what I’ve observed. I can name perhaps 2 or 3 instances of this, I know of Kanye, Finneas, and that’s about it of an artist stating how they’ve directly influenced them. Im sure there’s more, but I don’t remember seeing them mentioned as such, specially when their mix of hip hop and downtempo atmospheric music have been clearly influential.
i took a trip to greece with my best friend in 2006. we rented a car in athens and drove around for ten days desperately looking for a record store, cuz the radio was making us feel crazy. we finally found one after a few days and bought the massive attack greatest hits album. so this song will always make me think of driving aimlessly through greece. we tried to sleep on the beach one night and we woke up in the pouring rain and ran back to the car. such a great trip. we had no real plan, but we saw a lot of cool things, and massive attack was the soundtrack.
Great recommendation. I think you'll love all their other songs. Gotta say it again, Erol. You're guitar work is brilliant, man. I hope you enjoyed the gig.
When I first stumbled across Massive Attack in the early 2000’s, fresh into high school, I had Mezzanine playing on repeat for a while and had Angel in my MySpace music player 😂. They, along with Portishead, had me fiending for more Trip-Hop, because I had never heard anything like it at the time. Recommend Angel, Risingson, and Dissolved Girl from this album as well.
If you want to continue with some Trip Hop. Check out Archive (Bullets, is a good place to start. Not my favourite but it’s generally the most played track) and Unkle (either Be Here feat Ian Brown or Rabbit In Your Headlights feat Thom Yorke. If you go for the either of them avoid the official video).

Keep diving into trip hop, Tricky - Hell is Round the Corner/Aftermath? Then maybe go check out some Groove Armada or Faithless - God is a DJ/Insomnia - I recommend you go live versions with them. Oh and Air, the Moon Safari album.
Two suggestions: Angel from this same album. And Aurora’s cover of Teardrop, live in studio is, imo better than the original, largely due to her incredible voice and control. @@helenespaulding7562 I don’t believe any cover is “better” than the original. It can only be only be an updated version. It can never have the creative spark that inspired the original creation. 90% of the work has already been done.

I have heard some covers that take the original to a whole different level, and the original creators have admitted that the cover artist now “owns the song”. Hendrix cover of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower is one. Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” is another. But I certainly take your point.
I’m a fairly new sub, so asking for guidelines on what type of music you would like to be steered toward. I see you like Radiohead and Tool…Deftones. Are you looking to discover heavier music from 80’s onward that you haven’t heard before? Metal? I see you also like trip-hop. Putting that together, I’m thinking The Monkey Dies by Low and Road of Bones by IQ. BOTH highly underrated bands. Studio versions best on these. Also, you need to check out Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief.

Strong agree. Music videos are a different media and they usually have a different point of view compared to the song. I love music videos but, for me, they trigger a different part of my brain than just immersing myself in the audio landscape. Not too dissimilar to the difference between a book and the movie based on that book. What you see can so easily change the entire vibe of a song. Also, sometimes, the video version of songs can be a different mix than the album version.
I actually agree with you… But not knowing the tunes makes me a little squeamish about what videos to pick because you never know who did the video… Whether the comments are gonna say I picked the wrong one, etc. etc. etc. so I hear you and I agree. Experimented with making the screen a little smaller and some people went mental over that lol… We’ll get it figured out eventually. Thanks!

Highly recommend "Garlands" by Cocteau Twins personally. Great album.
She sings Teardrops almost completely in her "head" voice. She has such great tone and breath.

Are they underrated? I feel like they are very much spoken about as important and influential almost everyone with knowledge on the topic.
Influencing modern music could be considered a insult if you are forced to listen to the modern music charts!

For this genre, I would like to mention Hooverphonic. I love "Eden". "Inhaler" and "2 Wicky" are also good.

The whole album of the is song is fantastic! Mezzanine! Songs sound, vocals, everyone close to perfect for the whole album, in my top 10 ever!

This album, Mezzanine, is on my short list of next vinyl to buy. I never see it in stores. Keeping a look out.
