XTC - Dear God | Reaction! (I Love This Band)

  • XTC has become one of my favourite bands to react to. I love that this song caused controversy. Partridge sounds intense as usual and Jasmine Veillette's young vocals add a lot to the track too. As a kid who wrestled with religion and dreamt about God, like Partridge, I just love all of this.
    Thanks for watching!

I've worked in a record shop. I've worked as a college DJ. I've worked as a professional DJ. I've collected over a thousand albums and seen hundreds of bands in concert. XTC is my favorite band in the world. Their catalog is VAST, but check out "Senses Working Overtime," "Wrapped in Grey," "Your Dictionary, " "Harvest Festival," "Travels In Nihilon," "Jason And The Argonauts,"... so many great songs... and DON'T sleep on their alter-egos "THE DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR... where they went undercover and made the greatest 60s tribute ever... all original songs, but you can play spot the influence all day. Songs from Dukes to check out: "25 O'Clock," "Your Gold Dress," "Collidaascope," ... Andy is a lyrical genius... enjoy the journey!!

Brilliant and Ballsy!!! We all have questions. I’ve seen the most devout people question God after losing a dear, loved one. We’re human and it’s ok. Please let the questions flow. It helps us all to heal

I LOVED XTC (and still do) when I was in college. Yes, I'm old. I think Andy Partridge is a truly underrated singer / songwriter. SO many great songs from XTC. Andy has been producing and releasing his own songs himself now for quite a while. XTC has a fairly large catalog. Hardly any songs aren't good. When I heard Dear God in 1987, I was gobsmacked. I was driving my car in CA and kind of went nuts. It says everything I feel about belief in "god". Such a GREAT pop song! ❤

Not sure if you know, but Terry Chambers formed his own XTC cover band called EXTC. I've seen them once and I'm seeing them again soon! They play in small venues which makes it so personal and after the show you can meet and chat with Terry, take pics with him, get autographs, etc. They play all over the US. They're on their US tour right now! Go SEE THEM! Even though it's just Terry, it's still XTC. It sounds perfect.

@@imbwildrd3693 Wow. I didn't know that. But for me (even though I do love Terry's work!), XTC is *mostly Andy for me. I can't imagine seeing XTC songs sung by anyone else. I still *would go see Terry's band, but I live in Portugal now. Maybe they will come back to Europe and do a tour...

This was the very first song from XTC I ever heard. I loved it so much right away (and I was a not necessarily devout but avowed Catholic at the time). It got me into discovering more of their work and eventually them becoming my favorite band. I've since become pretty much a humanistic atheist, though I like to describe myself as an agnostic. Because in my opinion, it doesn't *matter* whether or not you believe in God (or some deity or other). What matters is what you *do*.

XTC is hands - down one of the most underrated bands of all time. Their catalog is, as one musician put it, "rife with masterpieces". SO TRUE. Their musicianship was top tier. Just insane. I know there are MANY songs to choose from, but if you want to hear what an insanely powerful and beautiful song sounds like, try "THAT WAVE" from the album, "NONSUCH)". Holy crap........

Was waiting for you to get to this song! It blew my 15-year mind back then. Still one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite bands. Google for the story about the making of the "Skylarking: album, and the tension between Todd Rundgren and Andy Partridge. I just listened to a recent interview with Todd about the making of the album; apparently Andy wanted to keep the song off the album because it was so controversial, and Todd called him a "p*ssy" for it!

But Rush, same deal, such a progression in their music over the years. Cheers!

Just watched this again; it's so good. Like you, I also really loved Andy P's 'acting' in this. His face when he sings "All those people that you made in your image, still believin' that junk is true... well, I know it ain't and so do you, Dear God" - it's that perfect knowing smirk. As a longtime atheist, this song really resonates! When it came out, though, it was the height of the 80s 'Moral Majority', Bible-thumping BS... this song was shocking to a lot of people, and was banned from certain radio stations, etc. I LOVED it and still do. Glad you do too!

The part regarding the Devil, Andy is asking God if he created disease, the diamond blue and the Devil too. He's asking why God would create the Devil, an excellent question.
At the beginning of mankind's evolution he had a need to have answers so he invented deities and there have been hundreds of them. Personally I think we no longer have need of these superstitious mythological beings but should take responsibility for our own actions. Don't invest in an afterlife that there is no evidence of, focus on this world and making it better.

I'm so glad to be living in a country where being an atheist isn't really an issue. When I was a boy it might have been, or that might just be because I grew up in a religious family- I was an altar boy! I'm still amazed by some of the otherwise very intelligent people I know who are theists. I suppose it just shows the power of childhood indoctrination.
