Yeah, he's been struggling this year and written off by some. And I think Jumbo only decided who will lead with 10km to go after Bouwman fell back on the last climb.
Who wouldn't want Tom D as a teammate? In 'lost' position himself after Etna, now fighting for his buddy Koen. They trained together in Columbia this year and became good friends on and off the bike. You can see Tom cheer in the background even before Koen crosses the finish line! Chapeau!
Man, for anyone who wants to know what pro cycling is really about and why we all did it no matter how hard it ever got, just watch this stage. A former Grand Tour winner slays himself to the very edge of human capability, and ALL to give his teammate a chance to win! Bravo TD! That's the sport in a nutshell. The sport offers one of the last chances in our modern world for a man to be truly noble.
I agree regarding the potential of displaying nobility, yet sadly a lot of times the sport is littered with egoistic and ruthless behavior such as sprinters crossing lanes to cut off faster rivals, sometimes ending in bad crashes as you all know… Watching moments like shown here restore my love for the sport tho!
You crack me up. You think winning a few bucks at local crits qualifies you to wax poetic about what Pro cycling is all about. You never had a sniff of this kind of cycling. Tom Dumoulin is a climber that can't win grand Tours anymore but he can be an excellent domestique on climbing stages. That's what they are now paying him to do. In this stage, he did his job. A professional knows his job.
Wow, THIS is why I LOVE the mountain stages! What an awesome battle for his first Grand Tour stage win. Thought Bouwman was cooked on the last climb, but what a fighter and great team work by Dumoulin. The top 5 guys were just awesome today, including Camago not ranked. And I bet my house on MVDP for tomorrow ;)

Splendid run away from four rollers sprinters who really collaborate and relayed each others with a loyal fairplay, and after running past the red kite offered while sprinting regularily a magnificent stage victory to a "rookie" young cyclist!
Yea I noticed the 3 Dutch riders in top 4 positions also. Great showing for them but unfortunately it's the team's that count not the countries. I say that respectfully
Was surprised Tommy D and Koen didn't do more of the "old 1-2" attacks (a la QuickStep) instead of playing defense. Evidently they had confidence in Koen's sprint and that he wouldn't get tired chasing down attacks.
Yea but then you've always got those people saying that they're ALL doping. It makes me angry. These men are quite likely some of the greatest athletes on earth.
