Ready to spend an entire day in one of the most remote corners of the USA? Take a drive down Hole In The Rock Road and end up 56 miles from the nearest pavement. Hole In The Rock Road cuts into the heart of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, to a dead-end, high above Lake Powell, a.k.a. the Colorado River.
That dead-end was a major obstacle for early Mormon settlers. They needed to cross the river, in order to settle the land on the opposite side. The only way down to the river was to build an almost-vertical road, by blasting away rock in a narrow slot in the cliff, then lowering their wagons down by rope.
Nowadays, it's impossible to imagine that their mission was successful. It's quite a feat just to make it to the end of the road in a regular vehicle (though it can be done without 4-wheel-drive). The rewards for driving this road are immense -- you get to see an other-worldly corner of Utah, and experience overwhelming solitude.

I travelled this road with a mate in 2002. Road was far worse than this shown, camped ( tent) next to the Dancehall in the Rock. You did briefly show that famous site. Pity you didn't stop in places of interest to a traveller like us. Also extremely disappointed you didn't show the actual gulley cut into the rocks down to the Colorado River. Oldtimer Englishman from Shropshire reliving some past adventures.

This communicates the subtlety and vastness of the Colorado Plateau perfectly. I'm surprised is has so few views. Kinda like the straight sections where you can zone off and watch 50 Mile Mountain go by.

They wrecked/improved the road. Was there in 98 and had to 4 wheel crawl obstacles on the last 10 miles. Was over an hour on the obstacles. Got bunched up with some German tourists with 4 brand new stock rented Ford Explorers. They beat the crap out of the Explorers on the rock climbs. It was hilarious watching them hammering the throttle to get over some of the obstacles. Smashing undercarriages ,spinning smoking tires 5 ft in the air. They had more fun then anyone can have making it to the hole. I left before them, wanted to be out before dark , can only imagine their trip out in the dark without me spotting. And the look on the rental agent back in Salt Lake city had to be priceless.

Drove this in November 2018. Rented awd suv Stopped after 3 miles and turned back. Horrible road couldn’t go 15mph. My advice. Get back on 12. Head down the road and take the burr trail. Much more fun and easier on the vehicle. They need to work on hole in the rock road big time

Best minimal I have ever heard and I happen to compose in that idiom as well. It is not often that I find myself saying "I wish I did that," but there you go. :D I will definitely check out Chris's music site.

Nice job as this really captures what the Hole in the Rock Road now looks like. I guess "improvement" is a subjective term. I can remember a time, within the past ten years, that the hill shown at about the 18 minute mark, was at times not even passable with 4wd. The blade of the bulldozer has now scraped away wagon ruts in the sandstone created by the early Mormon pioneers who used this road. While you can now get to the end in a Camry, it is at a cost of losing history.

Yes, thank you very much for sharing your videos of this long road. I will be driving it next April for the very first time and I really appreciate being able to get a clear view of each of its many miles.
May I ask you two questions: what type of car were you driving? Had the road been recently graded? Thanks again.

On June 10,1963 a group of Boy Scouts and their leaders were Involved in a horrific accident along this road where they were all loaded in a cattle truck, the truck lost its brakes and rolled backwards into a ravine killing seven scouts and six leaders,a Monument was erected at the site where the accident happened,I was wondering if you seen it along the way?

I've been down this road many times. Usually a lot dustier. Spent a lot of miles in my youth on dirt and gravel roads in trucks and cars. You can go fast, faster than you think on washboard roads. Get up enough speed to match the harmonics of the road; it starts to feel like you are only hitting the tops of the bumps. Seventy MPH feel great in most vehicles...do watch it on the curves.

That’s about how fast I was driving to get out of there 2 years ago when I got a puncture on our rental and they didn’t provide a tire iron to swap to the spare. Reached that gas station with just enough air left in the tire so to not damage it. Jumped that car as well as bottomed out several times on that road.....fun!!! I want to go back in something more like a Jeep next time though...still need better clearance toward the end.

Should be called hole in your tire road. I got a flat. Barely made it into Escalante 3 miles out. Drive slow and not fast is my recommendation. Some people say fast but it’s bull. The road sucks. I’m not complaining just want to save someone the trouble. Sunset Arch and Jacob Hamblins Arch we’re insane.

Within a week Trump is likely to significantly reduce the size of Grand Staircase Escalante and open it to mining. Suggest you visit immediately if interested in seeing the last major undeveloped wilderness in North America. “Remember these things lost”...

I tried this road on a motorcycle last weekend. Finally gave up. 5 hours to do half the road. I do not recommend it to anyone on a bike. The sand was the killer. Darn hard to ride a bike in sand.

it's interesting that one of the things you advise in your introduction is "don't rush".. and then you give us a video that does just that! Did you find the scenery distasteful and you just wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible? If you can't take your time and let viewers enjoy your efforts, then you pretty much wasted your time out there. Fortunately, there ARE other vids on here that DO take their time and come away with excellent work.. videos that will still be enjoyed long after yours are forgotten.. to bad. And all because you were in a hurry!

    • @takemytrip
      @takemytrip  10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Chris, chill. I didn't rush, I spent almost the entire day on Hole In The Rock Road -- as much time as daylight would allow. If you watch the video closely, you'll see dozens of times when I pulled over and stopped to take pictures, etc. Of course, the long pauses are edited out. And the video is accelerated in order to make it watchable. It's asking a lot to expect anyone to sit through a 20 minute video, but in real-time this would have been 2-3 hours long, maybe more. Speeding it up makes it possible to see everything in a comfortable amount of time. That said, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it.
