2019 Honda Insight Review - First Drive

  • Honda has resurrected the Insight again in their latest bid to become a dominant player in the hybrid vehicle segment. The Insight joins their Accord Hybrid and Clarity HEV/EV/PHEV lineup as the most efficient Honda sold in America. But there's a twist. Instead of making a me-too car that copied the overall form of the Prius, Honda decided to make this Insight a four-door sedan. Also a little unexpected, this Insight is arguably one of the best compact sedans in America. Full stop.

    In my 2020 Insight EX, I can easily average over 60-65 MPG for my 50 mile round trip commute in Los Angeles - with the expected traffic. This car excels in traffic mpg commuting. I once got over 80 MPG for a 24 mile drive, with careful techniques.

      I also have 2020 EX trim, and I get around 60 mpg without an effort. I also noticed that the actual mileage is 2 mpg higher than what is displayed on dash. I get around 550 miles in one fill up which costs me around 24-27 USD @ 3 USD/Gallon which is pretty good considering how much I used to spend on a 2007 civic EX @29 mpg.

    Having owned an Accord Hybrid now for 4 years I understand full well the "free-revving" nature of the system. But being a gadget guy I find it fascinating how it goes about its business. Think of the gas engine/generator as filling in for any lack of battery charge from the pack, depending on the demand you're giving it. Cruising about town it's all but silent. Dipping into the wonderous electric motor torque is alluring and will bring mileage down some if used too often! :) In that regard it would be nice if the electric power system allowed just a degree more electric only mode when starting from a stop (EV mode does to some extent) because traffic today seems to bring with it a race from one light to the next. That usually lights up the gas engine pretty early. But I'm sure Honda engineers have tuned it to perform best. Maybe with future battery improvements? Driven sedately along long secondary roads, without stop lights, at 35-45 mph it's actually pretty easy to see over 50mpg!

    Talking about mpg, my 2019 Accord Hybrid avg. about 40 mpg with outside temp of 35 F, whereas my friend’s 2019 Insight can reach 54 mpg under the same weather condition. So the difference in fuel efficiency is very noticeable (not merely 5 mpg difference as estimated). But given that Accord is roomier, it might be a better choice for people who has family.

    Absolutely agree that the Honda Accord Hybrid is the closest competitor to this new Insight Hybrid. As an existing 2nd gen Insight owner, it's a tough choice between the two new models. A large part of my ultimate purchase decision will be based on final list price (in Canada) and available inventory. Great review Alex!

      Kin, same as you- 2nd gen Insight owner looking for a new car. Stopped by the local Honda dealer. Currently no incentives to buy the new Insight.....dealer offered to sell as sticker price. Interesting .... compare to Honda Accord Hybrid which does have incentives (about $2K off sticker price, depending on model). Including incentives the price of the larger Accord is makes it an option to give serious consideration to!

    As a long standing Honda fan, I've been disappointed over the last few years to see them become rather complacent and lose their design and engineering mojo. Happily, they have really turned that around. The Civic Type R, new Honda Accord, new Acura RDX, and now the Insight all appear to be at least extra base hits, even home runs. The story of how that happened would be interesting.

Put less tension on the motor because of 2 motors electric and gas. I have gotten up to 60 miles per gallon...when driven properly.

    • @wgo6994
      @wgo6994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a 2019 Honda Insight Touring, and Steve is correct. This is just BS ! When you get your Insight, make sure that the 3-4 online surveys you get to do, you make this your NUMBER ONE COMPLAINT ! I don't give a damn about the 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon difference a spare tire would reduce the miles per gallon it would reduce. My Insight gets about 61-62 mpg and I think I can live with that, BUT I cannot live without a spare tire. The patch kit is plain BS !.

  • @bobriemersma
    @bobriemersma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm still disappointed they didn't just make this a Civic outright. They did a lot of damage to the Insight name with that travesty in 2010. I think a hatchback would have greater appeal too from better rear headroom to more versatile cargo carrying.
    It will be interesting to see how this new system performs in real-world conditions outside the Sun Belt though. The old IMA system was a real trooper in all conditions and I miss it.
    I had my 2003 Civic Hybrid CVT since May 2002 until I hit a deer and totaled it this year. I was quite happy with it and only missed the ability to handle long cargo now and then. 60/40 seat passthrough would help but a hatch would be better. I think I may have to let this new Insight evolve more.

    Alex, love the review as always. I would like to ask if you could add a new section to your reviews. I would really like to see you review each cars Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist features (Honda Sensing, Tesla Autopilot, etc.) and rank them like you do other features like handling and braking. As they become standard/optional on more cars I think it'd be nice to see how they compare. I know some systems work in stop and go traffic well, others not so much, and some stop below 25mph. Also all of these systems seem to handle lane centering differently and I'd love to see your take on how well they do. This information isn't always easily found online. As always, thanks for being the best car reviewer on TH-cam!

    A Civic Hybrid by any other name? I still like how despite the clear size & interior resemblance to a Civic they put in a lot of Accord like touches on it.
    Still the Insight now introduces quite a bit of overlap in Honda's fuel efficient car lineup. We have the regular Civic which is a pretty efficient car as-is, then we have the Accord Hybrid, the Clarity PHEV and now this.

      It seems like the car shares the same roofline (and therefore basic bodyshell) as the Civic sedan, but Honda have invested in unique body panels plus the interior that blends Accord and Civic parts. I guess it is US market only replacement for Civic hybrid, and US market prefers sedans hence the choice of a sedan body style. I think it should be a hatch though, it should be more overt about being a Prius rival and have that Kammback shape like the 2nd-gen Insight.

    I owned a 2003 Civic Hybrid (which I loved) and a 2013 Civic Hybrid (which handled like a boat, and which I didn’t love at all). The 2013 was my 6th Honda since I started buying them in 1984. I really like what I’m hearing about the Insight, except the part about it handling like a Civic. Unless the newer Civics since 2013 have seen *major* improvements in handling, that doesn’t impress me at all. Once they get some stock in at the local dealers I will go and test drive one, and will seriously think about purchasing it.

    • @Armstej
      @Armstej 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did you ever get the test drive? I bought an EX on Monday, and am in love - the handling is a dream. I traded in a 2018 Accord hybrid, as it was just too large (I kept backing into things...) the Insight, for me, is perfection.

    • @Johnny-rj9on
      @Johnny-rj9on 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then they must have seen improvements in handling because the 2019 Insight I've been driving for the last week feels great. Precise and quick, and in sport mode it actually packs a bit of a punch.

  • @brandononbrand

    Darn. Was hoping Honda would lean into Insight as premium compact and offer the same features as Accord Hybrid. Oh well... the feature and power penalty doesn’t justify the marginal MPG improvement over Accord Hybrid IMO

  • @bluegtturbo

    Sorry but 50 something mpg?? Noooo - that is not nearly good enough. I get 80mpg from my 12 year old 1.4D4D diesel corolla...MPG expectations are so loooowww in the USA. In Europe convention ICE cars such as the large Mercedes E class can get 60mpg+

    No blind spot radar or cross traffic alert. A simple backup camera, and just the stupid Lane Watch camera which show trash cans and mail boxes, unless you are one of those types that sits in the passing lane and then it might work. Here in Kansas you would get a ticket for doing that. This is why I can't buy a Honda.

    Hey Alex, in the minute13:40 when you talked about the paddle for regenerative tracking, I thought the same, the right with the plus symbol will regenerate more and the left will do less, but I find out that is the left with the minus the one that brake more and regenerate more, now you're the second persone or may be I saw you saying the same in other video, so I'm doubt now if one bracket more but regenerate less? thank you for your videos.

    I own a 2016 civic exl nav. I do like the rear styling and the front absence of fake air intakes. Driving only 7000 miles a year not sure I could justify the hybrid. I average 35 mpg and have gotten 46 mpg. Like the new entertainment with a volume knob but sad about lane watch. Way to go honda. Hoping the new hrv is as good. It needs the turbo however.

    • @EMichaelBall
      @EMichaelBall 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A CPO i3 without range extender, if cheap enough up-front, may be your best bet. A used Volt, especially Gen 1, is another bargain. (Gen 2 is less reliable, per CR.) Let someone else take the depreciation hit. You'll thank me later.

    • @SNESmapper
      @SNESmapper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly my plan if I go the Volt or i3 route (buy used). Gen 1 Volts are very cheap but I'll probably go with the Gen 2 because of all the improvements.

      Most buyers still want sedans over hatches. Crossovers aren't viewed as hatches.

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Um crossovers are the new "hatches"- in that people still want that utility, practicality, more room, and sometimes AWD but with elevated driving positions. Urbanites still want actual hatches for their practicality and size for parking.

    Since I had a bad experience with the hybrid battery in my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid (there was a class action lawsuit), I would like to know whether or not this vehicle has a warranty covering the battery capacity. Please do not cite the defects warranty, those warranties do not normally cover capacity. If anyone has any battery capacity warranty information for this model, please post a link.

    I just bought the Honda Accord Hybrid (4 weeks ago) and need YOUR expertise on how it "really" works, it seems different than the 2017. I have found that the infotainment system in the middle of the dash goes "black" and has to re-boot a lot, worries me a little. Sure would like to see one of your "complete" tests on the 2018 Accord Hybrid... explaining how it actually works.
