    I had '15 GTI, sold it during COVID, and have wanted something new ever since. With manuals coming to their demise, I was looking at an VW R or Mini. Stopped by the dealer just to test drive a mini with manual and to my surprise they just had a JCW. This Mini was so much better than the '15 Mini we last drove. I fell in love with it and took it home! The adaptive suspension is worth the money as we also test drove an S with stock suspension and it was a much firmer ride. Our JCW is fun and refined. It's not like riding in a STI, Civic, or some of the other plastic feeling sport hatches. This feels like a small BMW inside, the layout is fantastic!

    Absolutely loved it on a test drive. Having tested both an i30N and a GR Yaris, the Mini felt the like a much more premium package, obviously reflected in the price, but if you have the money, I'd say go for it! Excelent car.

    I own 2021 a "normal" Cooper (the "rational" version) Classic 3dr (with all the gizmos and whatnot) and i absolutely love it. It´s very frugal and 136hp is plenty for a small hatch (back in the 80´s this would be a ridiculous statement). The JCW is amazing and top of the line (although a little "thirsty" with the gasoline at 2.1 € a liter). In Europe we have three lines - 1 - Mini One 102hp 2 -Mini Cooper 136hp 3 - Mini Cooper S and, 4 - Mini Cooper JCW. The 1.5 cooper is bullet proof in reliability and a very nice ride all around.

    I’m testing this exact JCW version tomorrow!! I had a R56 mini and sold it when I bought a c6 Z06 corvette. Yes the 3100lb Z06 is insane fast, way more than I need. I took it to the track to drag race and had a blast. BUT I just miss that mini handling and fun. Jay Leno is 100 percent right: “it’s more fun to drive a slower car fast than a fast car”. The vette is cool, but I just can’t do the same fun chuckable lol stuff that I could in a mini. I’ll see how the test drive goes. Years ago when I bought the R56 I HATED the 2015 F56 models. They felt like big comfy minivans and I didn’t feel the go kart feel, but I loved the R56. I’ll see what the new one feels like first. If it doesn’t have that go kart feel, I will probably keep the vette longer and enjoy it for the power it has. But definitely would like another mini!

    I went from a fiat 124 to a golf r and picked up an r53 as a covid toy. The r53 was just a ton more fun to drive, I can't stress that enough. Golf R infinitely more capable - but I just couldn't warm up to it. Fiat 124 was great but the trunk couldn't...well function as a trunk I ended up in some bad spots when hitting trails for camping in the golf (with a kayak on the roof)r and ended up with an 2016 X3 35i. Can't stand the thing. Looking at trading it in for an F56 - has to be manual (X3 was my first auto car ever - can't stand it). Hard to find a jwc so I'm leaning towards just getting an mcs and putting the extra towards "sorting it out". But the brakes...the braaaaaaaaaakes! Mini is truly a hidden gem if you want to enjoy the drive DAILY.

    Like the other owners I really enjoy my '15 Cooper S 4-dr HT. However, I feel like I've gotten everything out of it that I can on the track. Either the JCW or the Subaru BRZ would be a reasonable "upgrade" that I could afford. I climbed all over the BRZ at the Los Angeles auto show and, yes, it is nice. Much nicer in person. The BRZ is a few thousand less than the JCW, too. But what about the numbers? Curiously they both put out 228 hp but the JCW has a slightly better weight-to-power ratio. What gets my attention though is that the JCW has 28% more torque. That is significant. You're definitely going to feel that coming out of the corners. Still, not a slam dunk choice. BRZ = RWD and 50/50 weight distribution. JCW = FWD and 65/35. My Michelin Pilot SS's on the front are toast because of understeer (or me coming into the corners too hot, yeah I have to be honest). So what to do? Probably can't go wrong with either car. What a nice problem to have!

I bought a 2021 Countryman JCW with the 301hp version of the B48 last year and I absolutely love it. I'd like to see Everyday Driver check one out if they could get their hands on it because it has the same soul as the 2 door hardtop only with more power and more space.
    And I agree with the comment about the newer Mini's being entry level BMW's because that's exactly what they have become. Great thought, guys! The price differential isn't that large and the fuel economy penalty is minor. I owned a base 2015 Cooper 6MT and it was quick in the city, but on the highway it was really slow. I bought a 2021 Mini Cooper JCW GP, best car I have ever driven. I love it so much that I almost want to just drive it year round I just need to find a set of winter wheels that will clear the brakes. I have an FJ Cruiser that I can use in the winter but it's so cumbersome, heavy and bad on gas I don't want to even drive it anymore.

  • @shevetlevi2821
    @shevetlevi2821 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really nice thinking man's review. I'm reluctantly liking the JCW for following reasons. I've had a 2011 Cooper S Hardtop for 11 years. Has it been fun to drive? Absolutely and the go kart (chuckability factor) is no exageration. My skill is more the limiting factor than the car. The thing is that even with something you like after 11 years you're ready for a change. Also the love affair with this car tarnished when I'd hear a long string of that Bloop! sound advising that some code needs to be checked. By the time the Mini reached 75,000 miles and long out of their not so generous warranty I'd literally spent twice as much on repairs as I had on 1999 Isuzu Amigo that had 140,000 miles on it. And the repairs are always expensive. Some of them stupid little things like the rear tailgate strut, or the driver's side sun visor (which is a great idea) plastic broke and kept on flopping down so I had to buy a new one and what looked like a $3.00 plastic part of course was $125 by the time I drove away. Back to being tired of it and ready for a change; I love hot hatches and I was interested in the Hyundai Veloster, but when the Veloster N came out I was lusting for it. Even the weird 3 door configuration was perfect for me. I have back seat passengers maybe 5 days a year but when it's my family I always get the "Why didn't you get a 4 door car?" crap.
    Also we just did a one month 4,000 mile road trip in it. The cargo area with the back seats up will manage an airline overhead suitcase no problem and a couple of small mashable bags. That's okay, you don't buy a Mini for its hauling. On the trip we kept the back seats folded down but with every restaurant stop you're keeping an eye on your car with the very visible luggage. Anyway the Veloster N seemed perfect in every way but they discontinued it because Americans seem to like boring cars without any eccentricity or fun to it. So with all of the numbingly dull looking and dull driving cars out there I'm back to the Mini but this time I'd think about the JCW. Whether it's worth $5,600 more compared to the mid level Cooper S for just a half second sooner to 60 mph is something that I have to think about. I know that you also get a bit more attitude and edginess to it but for me it's not a small amount. In this video I strongly dislike the instrument panel. I think that the clean flat tach, and fuel gauge cluster directly in front of the driver looks like an oval iPhone. I'm old school and like more analog instruments or if not analog then more 3 dimensional. If it were up to me the inside of the Mini would look like the inside of a Triumph TR4, although the overhead switches for the lights and sunroof are cool and aircraft like.
    Anyway, I'm going to keep the 2011 until it dies which given its reliabilty shouldn't be too far away but I've got time to think about and if I get another Mini, whether another S or the JCW it'll be more by default than the gotta have it factor.
    Btw, where do you keep that gold bullion?

    I know it's an old video, but as the owner of a new '23 Cooper S I feel obliged to note that the Mini digital speedometer is wildly optimistic. I think it's a common thing w/ all the Minis. The comments in the video about not feeling as fast as it is are spot on. The Mini (in any form) is not moving as fast as indicated on the speedo. On the highway, it borders on ridiculous. Apparently, the ECU knows exactly how fast the vehicle is moving, but the speedometer is specifically calibrated to read a bit high due to some concerns inspired by European Union regulations/laws/penalties. Nevertheless, the Mini is a blast to drive and I'm loving mine, wonky speedo and all.

    Great review guys! Couple of questions for you:
    My Minister of finance (AKA Planny Jules) drives a base 2007 mini cabriolet and loves it and while it's perfect for her I have a few questions for you about the new mini:
    1. How is the front wheel spin? Ours spins all the time from a start in dry or any amount of rain even with good tires by the car is so light.
    2. How's the interior quality? The plastic in ours is super cheap feeling.
    3. Does the new mini still require engine out for a clutch replacement? $2k on up for our clutch replacement because of engine out requirement.
    Still overall our 07 has great curves and body design is fun to drive and other than the convertible top sensors ($2k to replace) it has been a fairly reliable car. Cheers! :)

    I just sold a GTI and ended up going with the Mini Countryman JCW over the Mk8 Golf R. It puts a smile on my face every time I look at it and couldn’t be happier with my decision. There are so many quirks, and you will definitely pay BMW pricing, but wow the smile factor is sure there. While the 2 door was great in theory, it’s a big step down in practicality from a GTI/R and most hot hatches on the market. The clubman is a better competitor to current hot hatches.
    The JCWs really are the entry step into BMW performance vehicles, love that comparison!

    Like the other owners I really enjoy my ‘15 Cooper S 4-dr HT. A couple of times a year I drive it on the track in HPDE’s with AudiClubSoCal. That’s a lot of fun. But like Tim Allen said, “More power!” I would consider the JCW and the Subaru BRZ to be reasonably priced upgrades for track cars. Yes, the BRZ costs less but I’m at a later stage in life where I am fortunate enough to be able to say that fun is more important than money. Consider the numbers: JCW and BRZ both generate 228 HP but I believe the JCW has the better weight-to-power ratio. The JCW develops 28% more torque than the BRZ. That is significant. You’re going to feel that coming out of the corners. However, if I’m correct the JCW ships with Pirelli Cinturato P7’s which are not suitable track tires. Trust me. What to do, what to do…

    If you were OK with skipping some of the creature comforts you could probably get into one of these for around 30k which seems like a bargain. MINI's are like Legos in that you can customize it endlessly so if you wanted to save even more you could probably tune a Cooper S to JCW levels of oomph with relative ease.

      @bigmacdaddy1234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mini is a premium vehicle with superior materials, fit and finish. The handling is excellent. The software is reliable. On the other hand, the Veloster N is fraught with engine stalling issues, coolant leaks, clutch disk problems, shattering rear window (thin cheap glass), driver side door gets stuck in cold weather, cheap paint (clearcoat fades quickly), terrible software programming (lane departure sensors are usually wrong, airbags do not deploy in a collision, blind spot warning miscalculates). Sorry, but you can even begin to compare them until Hyundai fixes all these issues.
