I love abeka for phonics and language in the early years. It's so good and thorough. I completely agree that it can be overwhelming if you do it all and do it exactly as prescribed. But I don't do that. I adapt it to fit our needs (speed it up, slow it down, eliminate parts of it altogether etc) and if you do that it is such a solid program.
I feel like abeka is looked down on a bit in the homeschool world because people think it's too much or it's just "school at home" and it is both of those things if that's what you make if it. But if you're willing and able to adapt it to work for you, it's so, so good. -Sarah

I’d love to hear how Abeka compares to TGTB. We used Abeka for my now 9 year old but TGTB just looks like it simplifies everything.

I find Abeka to be much more thorough than TGTB.

I started Kindergarten Math with Confidence with my 5 year old last year and we LOVE it!

I love watching your reviews / picks for the year. I’ve chosen MWC for my daughter this year and so far we are simply loving it!
I’m glad we made the switch from TGTB, however we are still continuing with LA from them. Can’t wait to see your grade 2 and 3 picks.
Tbh I didn’t think you would choose Abeka, but it would be interesting to watch a review video in the near future.
All the best for the new year! 😊

I love it all! I have a daughter in kindergarten this year. She wanted to read together every day so I combined Sonlight T and Pre K. Since one is 3 days a week and the other 4 it worked. We added CLE K1 and K2 and the Sonlight K readers. It’s been a great year.

Just came here to say that I am currently using k4 abeka with my daughter, started when she just turned 4 in June, it's been 6 months and she can now decode 3 letter words and read simple books. it's an amazing curriculum, great choice!

So I went through abeka to teach my first to read and then switched to G&B when it got to be too much busy work (2nd grade) and fell in love with G&B. Now I'm teaching my 2nd child to read and we just hit a wall with G&B kindergarten, so I went back to what I know with Abeka's awesome special sound cards and that worked. But you're right, I totally changed Abeka to fit my needs. Just the special sound cards and only 1 work book and that's all. It's been perfect. ❤ Those readers are excellent too!

I have 6 moths left if kindergarten and my kindergartener did 2 years of kindergarten so we can do it gently!!! My younger 2 in school are doing NWC!!! I’m using the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading!!! I love modifying curriculum!!! For my kindergartener if she’s in 1st grade still learning to read at a kindergarten level I don’t care as she’ll get there!!!

We started our homeschooling journey this year and we are loving Math with Confidence too. Do you have any tipes on teaching pencil grip? My son complains that it hurts his hand

I recommend the Pencil Grip video from the Good and the Beautiful - it's easy to follow and very quick and engaging.

Hi, I have a question, I am homeschooling a 6 year old (our second year starting soon) and have three more all two years apart coming along. I also love the books from Sonlight and their history curriculum. And I really want to incorporate all that into each year.
But how on earth when I have four kids homeschooling do I read that many books? They’ll all be in different years and each have a huge pile?? I guess eventually older children can read their own mostly,., but even two years worth of books to read aloud seems a daunting amount of time reading books.

I would combine as much as you can. :) I have all three of my kids joining in on Sonlight Core A. We're adding in Sonlight Core P because I can but it's not essential. :) Also, while there are a lot of books, the daily reading really is quite short. Plus, you can opt for the 4-day schedule which gives a lot more flexibility.

My child turned 4 this past November. I will be homeschooling him & my question is do homeschooling parents wait until August/September to actually start counting their learning days such as how public schools do or how does that work exactly? We do learning & a lot now but just curious for how to set up my planner/calendar for his actual school year timeframe. Hope this makes sense

Every family does it differently. It depends on the regulations where you live. :) We begin our school year in February.
